Earned Income Tax Credit... Is this for real!? People who haven't paid ANYTHING in get money back because they have children?! Meanwhile, I'm paying 1/2 of my income in taxes?! How in the world is that acceptable? A person I know gets this credit every year and makes 1000's of dollars on it. She doesn't claim the money she makes cleaning for 200.00 per week... THAT is what is wrong with our country! People thinking they are OWED a living for NOTHING! I am sick an tired of my money going to pay for everyone else's life! And now... let's add their health insurance to my bill too... What have we become? Where is the PERSONAL responsibility for our lives, health, children, and families? I'm so sick of hearing about how the fault belongs with anyone except the person in the mirror. I would give a lot more to charity if I weren't tax raped every year... And the reality is most of that money is going to programs I find completely repugnant. Socialism... What a country... This is NOT what this country was intended to be... It is time to rebuild!

Agree with everything except the health care thing, and really only because we have always been paying for their healthcare, the new bill doesn't really change that. Just takes your money through a different mechanism.

It's not going for my (non-existant) child, and it's not going for my (non-existant) healthcare. I'm a 30-something female who has worked since she was 16 and paid into the system. I can't say I feel the same as you but I will say that I am not adding to your obvious stress. I take care of myself and while I qualify for many lower-income programs choose not to take advantage of them because I have the ambition and desire to work myself back into a better place. Please don't look at every person who does take advantage of government programs as a complete waste of space...some of us have college educations and have actually fallen on hard times and have also chosen NOT to take advantage of government programs although we could.

So I assume you'll opt out of Social Security when the time comes? And that you're in support of changing the tax code to keep businesses from working the system to pay little to no taxes?

Actually, Social Security is your money. The government took it out of your check, held on to it for years and gives it back to you. But if someone wants to take out ONLY what they put in, that would make it more fair. Usually, someone puts in about half and the government (actually, those that are still working) put in the other half.

I think the real issue is the corporations, many made record profits last year, and many pay very little tax on those profits.

While we're on fiscal rants:
And the banks. Last year, they borrowed money from the government (our money) at 1%, bought Treasury bonds that pay 3% interest (again, we're paying them interest) and -BINGO!- they are all profitable again. Clever, huh? :naughty:

Of course, that's AFTER we gave them a big pile of money when their housing bets failed.

On Taxes: $200 a week for cleaning houses is not a big profit, it's barely poverty level. Give her a break.

In 1988, the average middle class income was $33,000. Do you know what the average middle class income is now? $33,000.

If you want to be mad, be mad at the corporations and their CEO's who make 400X what their average worker does. In the early '80's they were embarressed to make 30X what their workers do.

  They don't pay their people a fair wage, so YOU have to do it, through the Earned Income Tax credit.

If the corporations paid their fair share of taxes, you wouldn't have to pay as much. Simple as that.

I agree about the children. Ticks me off that people with kids get so much money back as if they're doing the country a service. Um, no. We're already overpopulated so try using birth control.

Raped? Really?

Dude, if you're in a 50% tax bracket, you're not starving. If she's earning a great big $200 a week, she might need the credit to, you know, feed her kids ... and if that's all she earns, insofar as I'm aware, it's not taxable because she's below the poverty line, with her great big 10K a year salary. Quit whining.

As for the health insurance? You're right, much better to pay higher hospital bills because of people putting their basic wellness care off until the ER is their only option. And, personally, I find stepping over their bodies on my way to my annual checkup gives me a becoming flush to my cheeks!

I came back so that I could site the article about middle class incomes:

"Incomes for 90% of Americans have been stuck in neutral, and it's not just because of the Great Recession. Middle-class incomes have been stagnant for at least a generation, while the wealthiest tier has surged ahead at lighting speed.

In 1988, the income of an average American taxpayer was $33,400, adjusted for inflation. Fast forward 20 years, and not much had changed: The average income was still just $33,000 in 2008, according to IRS data.

Meanwhile, the richest 1% of Americans -- those making $380,000 or more -- have seen their incomes grow 33% over the last 20 years, leaving average Americans in the dust. "

Here's the link: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/How-the-middle-class-became-cnnm-2876148381.html

I encourage everyone to please read the full article with an open mind.

If it feels like your money doesn't go far, and an average salary doesn't pay your bills, you're right.

TO buy the same amount you bought in 1988, with $33,000, you would need to spend over $60,000.

Put another way, your current $33,000 is worth $17,000 in 1988 dollars.

Here's a government website with an inflation calculator: http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm
