I'm finally getting my wisdom teeth pulled after many many years of scolding from my dentist. And now it really hurts. I know, I know...it's my fault. I was being a lazy fart. :naughty:

The surgery is scheduled for this Thursday with only local anesthesia. No laughing gas, no sleeping. The dentist doesn't scare me and I don't mind the drilling and the pulling.

I am concerned about recovery time. I don't need to be back at work till Monday but I do have a musical that I need to go to that my friend is staring in on Saturday evening. This is a first world problem, yes, and it not necessarily a problem per se. I was just curious as to how long recovery was for members that have gotten their wisdom teeth out.

Dentist gave me a very broad time and all my friends are different. One was one in three days while another took a full three weeks.

Thank you everyone.

Hi Yaytacori, it didn't take long at all for me to get back to normal. You should be A-OK for work on Monday. Make sure you don't take anything that increases bleeding like aspirin, fish oil etc and apply ice and you should be just fine. If I remember correctly I was uncomfortable for the rest of the day after the procedure and felt a little sore for a few days after that but able to function just fine. I didn't chew anything on that side for a few days either just to be safe. Good luck!!

I got mine taken out when I was 16. They were impacted and I was given lovely sleeping stuff. Recover was tough and took 5-7 days. DH had his out a year ago. His had come up and it was done with a local at the dentist. He was fine the next day, just a little sore and swollen.

First of all....bummer. Sorry you have to go through this, because it sucks.

Everyone is different in their propensity for swelling. If this is the first time you've had a tooth pulled, there is no way of knowing how your body will react.

Are you getting all four removed? That's what I did and it was no bueno. All you can really do is have ice packs ready to help with the swelling and the anti-inflammatory meds.

If you are super vain, then you might feel up to going out on a Saturday night. If both cheeks are equally swollen, nobody may notice but you.

You're brave though. I make them turn the laughing gas on high until I start halluncinating and then have to wave my hands to signal.."too much, too much" :rodent:

Good luck

Go to GNC and buy yourself Bromelain pills. They're pineapple extract that prevents bruising and swelling. Boxers use them. Plastic surgeons recommend them. We had SO use it before his septum correction surgery, and he had minimum bruising, and very little bruising. I used them before my wisdom teeth removal, and I was FINE. I didn't look like I had teeth pulled out, at all, and since there was no swelling, the pain was very very minimal, and the surrounding areas were not sore. I went to work the very next day, and my coworkers mentioned that it was almost like I didn't have anything done.. so I had to show them my gaping holes in my mouth! LOL! They were actually questioning the validity of me missing work the day before!

Buy them asap, and put the little pellets underneath your tongue and let them sit there until they dissolve. They are my little miracle, homeopathic solutions to teeth pulling AND deep teeth/gum cleaning!

If the surgery is on Thursday, you should be good to go by Saturday. I've had my wisdom teeth pulled and recovered just fine.

I think it really depends on you and how you recover.

I had my wisdom teeth pulled in the summer of 2011 at age 30. I was in some pain for several days after the surgery, but I probably could have gone to a musical two days later. The one thing that might be tough is if you have any headaches or pain in your ears, which can happen, and in that case a musical is NOT going to be your first choice of entertainment if that's the case.

I had the twilight gas and that was pretty awesome. I didn't remember a thing, which is exactly how I wanted it.

I agree that it really depends on the state of your teeth and how fast you recover. Impacted wisdom teeth can not only be a PITA to get out, but can really bruise you up in the process of getting them out. If they're not impacted, I **think** it could be quite straightforward.

When I had mine out, I was sore for quite a while and the swelling made it seem like I had lockjaw, unable to talk or eat much for at least 3 days. I've also heard that the second day after surgery is typically worse than the first... :(sad Good luck and lots of tooth fairy dust!

You'll be fine for a musical.

Thanks for all the advice everyone! I will response to each individual later when I get home :) oh yes... personally :)

ouch! I had 2 removed plus 2 other teeth had stuff done to them and I was anesthetized along with gas - best dental experience of my life!!! Plus had some T3 chasers --- whoa! Who put that purple seahorse in the fireplace?!?!

But in terms of painful discomfort, I was great within a day or so and the swelling - well, that's a little bit hard to hide!! I think you'll be fine for saturday night, but just take care of yourself and don't push further than you think you should be. The body is a miracle how it heals itself but it needs you to be on board with it, too!! Rest, medication to reduce swelling and nothing strenuous.

Good luck! Think about diamonds when you patiently laying there!

Make sure you get oral steroid and you should be fine.

I was put completely under for the removal of all 4 wisdom teeth. It's been a few years but i think 2 were impacted. DH said I was like a drunkard the rest of the day. I took my meds faithfully, ate soft mushy food and spent most of my time on super low activity for the next 2 to 3 days. The swelling didn't look too obvious and the painkillers worked like a charm. I was able to transition to normalcy after that so I think you should be good to go for your outing by then.

Yaytacori, I think you'll be fine to go on Saturday. You'll have couple days to recover which I think would be enough time, but as others have mentioned recovery varies person to person. I recently had gum surgery which required sutures and I was actually fine (although uncomfortable) to go back to work the next day. It throbbed for a good week, but not sharp pain, just dull aching that gets rather annoying after a couple of days. I had Vicodin for the first couple of nights which I really didn't need (but took anyway just in case hahaha) and Advil was my best friend that week! The one thing I read was that icing on and off for the first 24 hrs. is important to reduce swelling and bruising that may show up later (after 48 hrs), but that's not realistic since you need to sleep. I would just try to do that as often as possible the first couple of days. Good luck with your surgery and hope you have a speedy recovery!

ETA: Madelise has great advice about taking the Bromelain. I've heard of that, but never thought of taking it before my surgery. That's a great idea!

I had mine out on a Thursday and was back to work/ school on Monday. I ended up with dry socket, so that made my Monday and Tuesday very rough, but after I got it taken care of it was fine. My teeth were impacted as well.

I did have complete anesthesia. I was out like a light, and if you have the option, I strongly recommend it for your surgery as well!

Oh, I feel for you! I think you will be fine to go to your friend's performance, and to be back at work on Monday.

My teeth were fully erupted (no need to cut into the gums), so I had a similar experience. I had two of my wisdom teeth pulled when I was 20 (on the left side of my mouth so that I could chew with the right side) and it was such a traumatic experience (I threw up from tasting the blood and it hurt a LOT, then got a dry socket) that I waited ten years to have the other two taken out--February of 2012. It went really well, I had very little bleeding and took it very easy the first day and my DH kept me well-dosed with pain relievers and soft things to eat.

There was some pain on the first day (I had them out in the morning) but by the next day, I was craving a taco salad and had no pain so I was crunching away by noon. I was very careful about not using straws and about keeping the area clean, so I did not get a dry socket. I did, however, get some bony spicules, which are tiny pieces of bone that are dislodged when the tooth is removed, and they work their way out of your gums. Those hurt, but the dentist removed them in just seconds.

Edited to add: it sounds like your teeth are fully erupted (meaning no cutting into the gums to remove the teeth), and most of the commenters have experienced impacted teeth/oral surgery. I am using dental terms because my mom is a dental assistant. My sister and DH had the oral surgery, and it was a much longer healing process and they got 'good drugs' while I just too OTC pain relievers. Popping out a fully erupted tooth is no biggie compared to cutting into the gum to dig out the tooth. Sorry to sound so gory, but it's true.

I think it depends on if you have impacted wisdom teeth. I hear if you have regular ole wisdom teeth it isn't so bad. I had impacted and it took 4 days. Good luck and hope the recovery is quick!

I had two wisdom teeth taken out when I was in college because my bottom left was impacted and needed to be out. I only took pain med for the day of surgery. I have no swelling. I was on winter break, so was just bumming at home.

I had my other two taken out earlier this year. I went back to work the next day. Again no swelling and pain med only on the surgery day. No one at work even knew I got my wisdom teeth pulled out.

So it depends on the person. Good luck and speedy recovery.

Hope you feel okay after your extraction. I feel so lucky in that I never had wisdom teeth. That may explain a lot of things. When DH got his out the oral surgeon prescribed Bromelain for him to take a couple of days beforehand and a week afterwards.

YayTacori--I just realized I never said: I HOPE YOU FEEL BETTER SOON! I know how terrible tooth pain can be, and I hope yours isn't too unbearable!

Yeah, I had 2 impacted "rollers" in the lower jaw - both cramming my lower teeth foward - pretty painful, and a malformed one in one upper jaw - all non-erupted, all of them had to be cut/chiseled out when I was 26. I was totally knocked out, thankfully. I wouldn't have done that while conscious for all the money in the world. AND, in spite of my extreme care not to, I got dry sockets. Right before a HOLIDAY weekend - Thanksgiving. Misery. The pain meds I had didn't touch it, until I went back and they packed the sockets. Pure instantaneous bliss - the cessation of pain. I WAS finally able to eat something on Thanksgiving, after about a week of nothing but broth.

As many have noted, having them already erupted might not be so bad, but awake while they cut? I wouldn't do it.

Good luck tomorrow, YayTacori!! I hope it all goes smooth as silk for you and you are discomfort free, the whole time!

Yes, just coming over to say good luck - I hope you get good drugs, and its a fast and painless procedure - and you can milk it and have everyone pamper you for at least the rest of the day, if not several

I just went to the dentist today for scaling & root planing -- was TERRIFIED. Like almost vomit in the parking lot scared. But it was pretty okay. They gave me gas that didn't knock me out but left me Twilighty. For a girl whose never been "high" in her life - WOW! See y'all on a future Intervention!

When I had my wisdom teeth out, I also had gas but it knocked me out so I never really felt the effects the same way I did today -- for a prolonged semi-awake kind of deal. Also I was super young & don't really remember much except that I went directly from surgery to producing live television at a shopping channel. On quite a bit of pain medicine. Wish I could remember more specifics for you in the hopes it would help you prepare but I. Am. Old.

I had a very easy time with my wisdom teeth. I was in college and home for a break. I got IV sedation ("twilight sleep") and don't remember a thing. There were only 3 to remove, and the missing one was on the bottom - I hear bottom ones hurt more than top, so that may have been a factor in the ease of my recovery. I had very minimal swelling, no complications, and was out at the mall eating soft food (cheesecake) the same day. So not everyone has an awful experience, and I hope yours is like mine!

I highly recommend the sedation if it's an option for you. It's possible to do without sedation, but it makes things a lot more comfortable and easy. I'm also not afraid of dental procedures, but it's just hard to keep your mouth open for the duration of the procedure and deal with the saliva and all that.

Good luck tomorrow!
I hope it goes smoothly for you.

I had two of mine out a couple of years ago. My BIG mistake was scheduling for December 23.... Ooops. It left me with a really long weekend to recover before going back to work and was in the middle of my school break so no classes to worry about. The anti-anxiety drugs that they promised would knock me flat kicked in after they were done so I pretty much slept the rest of the 23rd and much of the 24th. After that, I was MISERABLE. The pain was awful and the dang ibuprophin (extra stong but still!!) didn't do anything for me. Of course being Christmas Eve, the dentist was closed up for the weekend along with pretty much everyone else until Monday so I had the whole weekend to survive...

The other BIG mistake I made was being TOO careful to keep my mouth clean. I followed the directions I was given very carefully, but I still managed to get dry socket

I couldn't manage to eat anything the first day. By the 2nd, I could manage stuff that was super soft (preferably slightly chilled). (Oh -- don't eat broccoli! All the little green bits from the crown lodge in around the gaping hole and are uncomfortable)

I had to call in sick to work or leave after just an hour or so until about Wednesday the next week (so almost one week after) due to the awful pain and groginess/sickness caused by pain meds (and I didn't even get "the good ones"!). It got better gradually, but the first couple of weeks were pretty tough and I just didn't want to do anything other than curl up on the couch with pudding and flan.

Hi missy! :wavey: Thanks for the warning about aspirin and fish oil! I take fish oil everyday and I didn't even think about the increase in blood!

Awesome! I got some at GNC. But the only ones they had were the capsule kind... and since I'm vegetarian, I can't have any gel caps! sucks! I went to the local vitamin store too but they had never heard of it. :angryfire:

I'm just learning about this dry socket! Sounds like something I do not want! I wouldn't mind getting the anesthesia but it's not an option for me. From personal experience, I would rather go thru the drilling and the blood and the cracking. Anesthesia makes me so dizzy that I cannot stand up, let alone sit up. Nauseous to the point that I am throwing up every 5 minutes... Worst I have ever ever ever felt in my life.
