You''ve probably heard that saying "when it rains, it pours," right? Well, I''m here to tell ya, it''s the truth!

Many of you are aware that we very recently lost our Great Dane, Caesar. On the same day that Caesar passed away (Sunday, April 26), we discovered a problem with one of our two remaining dogs, Biko (pronounced "BEE-ko"). He''s a black lab/pit bull mix, and he''s about 14 years old. DH''s ex-wife adopted him from the SPCA before she and DH got together, so we''re not 100% certain of his age, but 14 is probably pretty close. We''ve been very lucky, though . . . he doesn''t act like he''s 14 at all! He runs around and plays like a dog half his age, and his appetite is wonderful. He does have a good bit of gray around his face, but that''s really the only way you''d know he''s 14! He walks with a tiny bit of a limp sometimes, but I think that''s because he had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his knee a few years ago. He walks much better since the surgery, but he still has a little bit of a limp from time to time.

Biko has quite a few fatty tumors all over him, just under his skin. Most of these are not visible, but you can feel them when you pet him. Generally, they''re about the size and shape of a small grape, and you can move them around a little bit under his skin. The vet has checked all of these, and says they''re completely normal for a dog of his age, and absolutely nothing to worry about. The vet said he would only worry if we find something like that on him, but it DOESN''T move around and feels like it''s solidly anchored in place. We haven''t found anything like that, thank God.

However, the lump we found most recently is MUCH larger than the rest. It''s probably about the size of my fist. (Granted, I have pretty small fists, but still!) It does move around like the rest of them do, but it''s in a funny spot . . . in the hollow where his hind leg attaches to his body. He lets us mess with it and it doesn''t seem to cause him any pain, so I guess that''s a good sign (hopefully).

I called the vet''s office and made an appointment for him on Wednesday, May 13 at 6:00 p.m. (That was the first available appointment with our regular vet.) The vet tech I spoke to said we shouldn''t worry as long as he''s acting normal (eating, playing, etc.), which he is. She said we should call the office immediately if any of that changes, or if the lump gets any bigger or seems to be painful, because the vet will want to see him the same day.

So, here''s hoping that he continues to act like his usual self, and that the appointment on May 13 goes well! Needless to say, I''m worried.

Sending tons and tons of dust to you and Biko. The fact that you can move it is a good sign so I''m hoping that he''ll be perfect!

I''m hoping it''s a sebaceous cyst! Though even if the aspiration comes out dry (if it''s sebaceaous, the syringe will just fill with fluid), then it could still be a fatty tissue or something equally mild. The good news is that those apspiration tests come back within 24 hours, so you won''t be waiting for too long. Lots and lots of dust for you and Biko!

Sending tons of Dust for your doggie!!! I hope everything is okay

Dust and hugs Irish! You have had one heck of a time these past few weeks - I hope it''s nothing.

Sending lots of dust that your little guy is ok!

Lots of dust!! I had a dog who got lots of those fatty tumors and he had to have a few removed because they were big and in awkward areas (like right behind his leg). The surgery didn''t bother him and they were able to remove them cleanly, so hope it''s just as easy for your doggy!

I''m really hoping it''s nothing and he''s going to be fine. It just scares me that this lump is so BIG! He''s not that big of a dog (only about 65 pounds), so a fist-sized lump on him is a HUGE thing! But, I''m encouraged by the fact that it does move around when we push on it, and that it doesn''t seem to cause him any pain. However, I''m worried that the vet will want to surgically remove it even if it''s completely benign, just because of the funny location. It''s on his left side, just in front of his hind leg, kind of in the hollow of his hip if that makes sense. So, I''m afraid it might be making it uncomfortable for him to walk or, if that''s not already the case, that it might start to do so if it gets any bigger. I just worry about putting him through surgery at his age, the poor little old man!

My golden retriever has a fatty mass on him as well. It's about the size of a baseball.

Sounds like that's what your guy has. I think he'll be fine, and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Aw, tons of doggy dust headed your way!

My dog had several of those fatty tumors you mentioned and some were quite large...like the size of a kiwi, but not as round (if that makes sense) and he lived a very long and healthy life! I hope all goes well at the vet. ****DUST****

awww... poor baby!!! sending MAJOR dust your way!! *dust* *dust* *dust*

Hi Emm,
Lots of dust and prayers for your family and Biko...please let us know what they say when you are able to get him to the vet.

i understand completely. it is very very difficult after the loss of a beloved companion to not panic when something seems amiss with the remaining population. in our case, unfortunately, we went through a space of 2 years when the panic was not unwarranted....... however, on a positive note, our vet said the same thing re one of our cats who has some under the skin masses: as long as it moves, isn''t painful, and kitty is normal in all other ways, don''t worry.....and i''m not.

Sending you lots of dust!

Irish-the timing just stinks! I am sure that all will be OK with the mass, our puppy is covered with the as well-some little and some not so little(4in diameter at least)---the good thing is that it is mobile! Lots of dust and hugs headed your way!!!

Aww, honey, hopefully you'll get some good news about your sweet dog Biko soon! Sending lots of dust your way!
