I have a question about my diamond studs. On the back of the studs (screw on backs) there is the number 585. What does this mean?

I have no idea where they came from or what the quality of the diamonds is, they were a gift.

Thanks!

585 means that the mix is almost 59% plat (585 parts per thousand) and the rest another metal (usually palladium).

I have seen 585 to mean 14KT gold and 750 to mean 18KT gold.

Platinum sold in the US is either 90 or 95 percent pure platinum with the exception being
platinum chain which can be 85% pure.

cflutist is right--it's the mark of 14k gold, 14 parts of 24 are gold; the rest is alloy. 14 divided by 24 =.58333333333, or rounded to .585

I''m still trying to be "jewelry educated" (or obsessed, whichever way you look at it)
