Is this for an engagement ring you're buying for a girlfriend? That makes a huge difference. The most obvious answer is that a sapphire is blue (though it comes in other colors if you're buying an e-ring you're probably thinking of blue) and most diamonds are colorless. So the first thing to consider is whether she wants a blue stone or a more traditional ring. A diamond is also more brilliant and harder. However, I think for most people, choosing one or the other really comes down to color preference.

The diamond is more firey due to its larger refractive index. It makes more rainbows from the light it takes in. It is also harder and likely more durable.

Sapphire is Aluminum Oxide where diamond is made of carbon. Another thing I find interesting is that a ruby is simply a red sapphire.

As to which is best for an engagement ring, that's up to you!

Good luck!
