Okay, our wedding is 10 months away. I need to start dress shopping, and really want to get it soon - most likely we''ll be going next month. I am planning on losing about 15-20 pounds before the wedding. This poses a problem for me... I think. If I were to find the dress - how much weight could I lose without having to buy a different dress? I know that I''m not going to buy a smaller size than what fits at the time and detailing on the dress will have a lot to do with what alterations can be done.

If anyone else has had this problem - can you give me your input?

Thanks!

Don't worry about losing 15-20 pounds, most likely they can adjust your dress to that amount of weight loss. If you were going to lose 50-100 pounds, then that would be a different story. And if I'm to give you any advice, its to ORDER YOUR DRESS IN THE SIZE THAT FITS YOU NOW! Because you can always take it in, but you cannot let it out as easily. Take it from me: I was going to lose 15 pounds when I got my dress, but instead I GAINED weight! You never know what that kind of stress can do to you.

Oh, I know. I've gained about 5 in the past month with this stress. I just need to stop relying on french fries when I stress out...

I, sweetjettagirl, promise NEVER to buy ANYTHING that does not fit me! You have my word!

Things with corset backs are good because they are adjustable, so there are fewer alterations, but I certainly wouldn''t make that the main criteria.

Just remember to look at how the dress style looks now, rather than later. A mermaid you like but doesn''t work now due to your size is something you want to avoid. Buying early also helps so you have plenty of time for alterations as well

that amount of weight loss is completely managable for alterations. My dress was taken in three sizes with ease. Just gotta find a good alterations specialist. :-) If you check my vow renewal pictures, I''d swear you never knew that it used to hang off of me. :-) Good luck. Cheers!

Thank you for your replies! It is very much appreciated - makes me feel a lot better!

I worked in a bridal salon, and we had a running joke because EVERY bride that came in, said, "Well, I''m going to lose XX amount of weight before the wedding..."

I''m not saying you won''t do it, I''m saying DO NOT buy a dress that doesn''t fit. We required brides that chose to get smaller dresses, sign a contract stating exatly why they were ordering a dress that didn''t fit... this was to save our own butts.

And like they said previously, 15-20 won''t be a huge difference. Just be wary about ordering a dress with lots of beading. If you do end up having it altered, they will charge you a CRAP LOAD of money to unstitch and sew those beads back on, by hand.

Best of luck with your shopping!!!

I plan on loosing about 15 as well. I just ordered my dress and special requested a corset back to help keep the alterations to a minimum. Depending on where the weight you want to loose is located (legs or tummy) it will effect the dress differently.

Also remember that if you want a lace dress, or a dress with really intricate beadwork, it will be much more difficult and expensive to alter a lot. Just something to keep in mind!

I know so many people who said that they were going to loose the weight before the wedding and they didn''t. The stress of life made it difficult to lose the weight. Now that they were married and happy he pounds just melted off them. The moral of the story, buy a dress the fits you now. I think I might have gained weight since I''ve ordered my dress, I''m too scared to check...

Definitely order your size now. You should be able to lose at least 15-20 lbs and up to about 2 sizes without a problem (DEPENDING ON THE DRESS). Obviously the more detail the less weight you can lose, but there is almost always 15-20 lbs to work with. So I say start shopping!
