Hi all,

I need some doggie dust... My mom''s dog Shayla (my avatar) is really sick. She is 8 or 9, was a rescue, and is sort of the one thing left in my family''s life from "before" right now. My parents divorced last year after almost 30 years of marriage, my mom''s teaching job was dissolved in a grant cutback, and my mom has to move out of the house she has lived in for 25 years on Jan 1.

She says that Shayla came in to the house covered in blood on her rear haunches. The vet, after blood work, x-rays, and a thorough examination yesterday, could not figure out what is wrong with her. This morning she is weak and refusing to move very much. They are thinking Lyme disease or some kind of coagulation disorder... Supposedly dogs have their kidneys affected by Lyme and that may be the cause of the bleeding.

My mom might eventually be ok without Shayla, I think, but I feel like my sisters and I might lose it. She is the sweetest dog. At the shelter all those years ago, she hopped up on the bench next to my mom and leaned against her with her head on my mom''s shoulder. She hadn''t wanted another dog, but Shayla has been the best thing to happen to my family in years.

I know dogs aren''t people, but she is a huge part of our lives and my mom''s best companion, you know?

Thanks...

I''m so sorry, of course dogs are like a part of the family. I hope she pulls through and sending lots of dust. KUP.

Lots of doggie dust coming your way!

of course I can''t say I know exactly what you''re going through, but our Dalmatian passed away a few years ago. She was a rescue as well and was one of the happy cheery ''people'' I could look to when my parents were going through their divorce. I had moved away to university when she passed, but it hit everyone pretty hard.

I would say don''t lose hope yet. They may still be able to figure out and treat whatever it is. Good luck to you, your sisters, and your mom.

No, dogs are not people, but they somehow manage to find a place in your heart just like one. In fact, I''m closer to my pets than I am to most people.

Tons of healing***DUST***DUST***DUST*** for a healthy puppy!

Thanks, Elle, Kas, Janinegirly, and Lulu! Its true, they are like members of the family! I guess I feel bad, I know things could be so much worse (the mom of one of my coworkers died last night, so this feels like small potatoes). But we love her and she has been a huge part of our lives for years.

I appreciate the dust!!

oh no Novel- I''m so sorry about the doggie. I hope all goes well... DuST~ I''m also sorry about your mom too. You are in my thoughts and prayers - sweetie

So, my mom heard back from the vet! PS dust does it again! Shayla has ehrichliosis, a tick borne illness. The funny this about this is that it is (I guess) related to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, which my little sister once had, and turned a good deal of her body purple. Not funny for her, but for the rest of us... Anyway, Shayla will get treated and should be ok!!

Thank you guys so much for your good thoughts. My poor sweet Shayla. We all know that she is getting old, though we don''t know how old, but the idea of losing her, much less now, is just too much.

And for our doggy loving fun, a picture! This is BF picking her up, which he loves to do, for some reason.
