Does your foyer look like an Amazon warehouse?

I live in a tiny 3rd floor walk up. Sometimes I open my boxes in the lobby/ mall area, have my kids take things upstairs and get rid of the box. Other times I leave it outside my apartment and unpack. Today I had 10 minutes and moved a target box inside my apartment. Of course that box had 4 pounds of sugar and several bags of gold fish crackers opened and smashed. So I got sugar and bits of crackers all over the stairs and my entryway. My husband had to pick up the bag of sugar to see why it's leaking after I cleaned up and went to get a plastic bag. I didn't even think about the virus...I did think about strangling my family...

I don't spray the boxes...If I can I leave them in my garage for a while..If not..I open the boxes with gloves and put the boxes in recycling...I wipe the contents with Rescue..I then leave them to dry in the garage..Then I take off my gloves and wash my hands. I thought about stopping all the wiping but it made me realize that there are tons of regular buggy germs on the items from people..I’m okay with still wiping everything down.

Greg removes the item(s) from the box outside then discards the box (recycling bin) and brings the items in sans box.

I usually leave the boxes in my foyer for a few days before opening depending on what it is. I don’t spray or wipe them down.
A few times you almost couldn’t walk through the front door but now it’s gotten better.
I also try to wait until my cart is full of stuff so I get one big box instead of five small boxes with one item each.

I don't really have much of a foyer so I wipe down, open, remove boxes, wipe down the contents if I can (in the case of fabric, I bag it until I can wash it) ( I prewash all my fabric anyway so thats not anything different), then I wash my hands. When it was really crazy down here, I did everything outside. Thankfully I have a decent enough system that I don't have to really do that anymore.

I’m following government guidelines which state there’s no need to sanitise boxes or mail, just ensure you wash your hands after touching them. We had lots of deliveries at the start of the pandemic, and have been in some form of lockdown for a year now, and haven’t had any problems.

Not sure where hubby bought it but I have a huge generator in the middle of my kitchen floor...the box has been cut open and there it sits...I don't want him to try and move it by his self though. We are old and creaky...

I recall reading that fomids are not a significant mode of transmission for COVID 19 as they were originally thought to be. So I stopped all the sanitizing of mail and packages and just focused on cleaning hands. Cleaning door knobs is good too, and not just for Covid.

Yep, most exposure is from breathing in airborne virus.

Still, even if the odds of getting it from physical contact are low, they are not zero.
So I'm not going to drop my guard one bit.

Yes! But it's not the foyer, it's the garage where most of the packages come in. I had three yesterday. The convenience factor of Amazon is huge. Who wants to spend time hunting down things like Oral-B toothbrush heads in the stores?

We live in tight quarters (700 square feet). We're a family of 4 with two cats and a dog, there's NO SPACE to store anything extra. Whatever comes in I unbox right away and the boxes go outside until recycling day. I wash my hands when I'm done. That's the best we can do!

PSA: I don't know whether you (or other readers here) are Costco members, but they have them on sale a few times a year.

I use Sonicare tips, and the packages of them are $50 or $60, IIRC.
But if I stock up when on sale they are $20 off.

This is a bit of a tangent but on the subject of wiping things down, my DH’s grandmother always washed the tops of canned items before use. Her logic was you don’t know who touched or what might have scurried on top of the cans (mice) in the store.

Never thought of that but probably not a bad thing to do.

I always wash cans before opening them. I also wash the outside of fruits with peel or rind before cutting them, and packages of cheese. I cooked a corned beef today and I washed the outside of the package before opneing it. Just a habit.

My mother and both my grandma's did the same thing and taught me to do that. Same reason. Plus when you use a can opener, some of what is on the top will get inside.

To the original question, I open packages the day I get them, immediately break down the box and put it in my recycling can in the garage. I always wash my hands after touching mail or packages.

My grand parents did the same ! Same explanation.
Makes a lot of sense. Problem is that grandpa got more cautious with age and the line between sensible and clean /hygienic and ocd germaphobe got blurry when he hit his mid seventies...
Fresh fruit started tasting funny because sometimes he'd wash it too hot/ with a splash of dawn, no more restaurants or fancy cakes because he suspected they weren't up to his standards...
It's a fine line to tread for me...
