Does your DH or BF have an expensive hobby that makes you worry?

Two words: Drag Car.

Nothing about a car that goes 0-220mph with a parachute for breaks is safe or CHEAP... although FI obsession with the car has been the reason I have so many diamonds... he''s feeling a little guilty perhaps?

SWL, what class of Car does your BF run?? Is he a circle track kinda guy or drag strip. I feel for ya... Many a Sat. I have spent sitting in the car trailer waiting for his bracket to come back around...

The longer they are in it (the sport) the more they break, fix, and dare I day it... UPGRADE the darn car....

My husband''s biggest fear is death, he is not a risk-taker. I''m more adventurous on that front. He is a techie though, and "needs" the newest greatest thing... but he''s pretty responsible about it.

My dad, now that''s another story. His hobbies: motorcycling and piloting small planes. I worry about him ALL THE TIME.

TB, he does track with his M3. And he's constantly complimenting how other guys have gorgeous new cars. It's just makes me a little worried that I might not be able to adjust to his spending habit if we are really getting married in the future.

Nope. I''m the one with the worrisome hobbies--martial arts, roller derby (hopefully . . . )

DH is pretty low key, and now that he has his gigantic television he''s done spending money on technology for a while.

Tournament bass fishing. A very expensive sport when you keep upgrading tackle and equipment, and add the entry fees, and travel and hotel expenses. Whether he''s fun fishing, practice fishing or fishing a tournament, he can''t work.

Thank God he doesn''t jump out of planes or race cars anymore.

This isn''t really an expensive habit but I guess it adds up over time. I hate spending money but my husband thinks nothing of eating out during lunch every day while at work. He''s too quick to spend money on frivolous stuff -- usually food, than I am.

Mountain biking! I know it's not super dangerous but it still makes me nervous when he goes out alone.

ETA: I guess this isn't that expensive after the initial purchase of the bike, but it's the safety aspect that worries me!

SWL: well at least he can do modifications on his current car, the Drag Car doesn’t even look like a car anymore... just a very expensive toy that has to be trailered everywhere... when we first started dating the car trailer was a novel concept to me... I was like "whhaaaaa? You don’t drive it to the track?"

I have gotten better about understanding that the Car is his vice, I get horses and Diamonds, he gets the car. If he wants to keep the play toys (trust me this was an honest to god convo before the engagement) it could only be with the understanding that family, health and home come first.

I may need to remind him of that conversation, b/c our kitchen needs an overhaul

Mountaineering. Not because of the expense, but because of the danger. D is planning to climb Denali and the Matterhorn in the next couple of years and while I completely support him, I worry. I love climbing, too, so I understand his passion, but the week before our wedding he climbed Mt. Ranier and fell into a cravasse. He was lucky that he was wedged in by his backpack and they were able to pull him out. D was frustrated because he asked to be roped up, but the guide said there was no danger at that point...needless to say, everybody was roped up after that.

LOL! My DH and I are the opposite... I''m the car racer and he''s the one waiting for me to come around each lap. It is a risky and expensive hobby, but sometimes I think its far safer than driving on the highway! My DH is in to photography so not dangerous, but equipment is kind of pricy. He just bought a professional-quality photo printer and now he wants another.

-Flying (just finished his private pilot''s license)
-Ultra-Light Backpacking/Hiking (more backpacks, sleeping bags, etc. than I can count)

-Deep Sea Fishing/Spear Fishing
-Guns/Shooting...Ammo is crazy expensive right now...
-Also crazy techie with new gadgets

...my SO is an expensive one, thankfully I''m fairly laid back and practical so I guess we balance each other out.

Jet Skiing. Expensive (trailers, boat, gas, etc..) and could be dangerous b/c he LOVES going on long trips like across Lack Michigan and I for one thinks anytime you CANNOT see land on a PWC is SCARY. At least he doesn''t do jumps anymore. He is a thrill seeker for sure. He also loves to golf which is only dangerous on the bank account.

Yes, his bicycles. I worry physically because he is always going too fast, even exceeding or meeting speed limits! He has to contend with cars for a lot of the way too (he does distance, marathon and mountain biking). The cost thing is an issue too. He''s always talking about upgrades! It''s way worse than jewellery as far as I can tell!

My husband hunts/fishes/traps, and foams at the mouth over guns. He bowhunts too.

It is more that he has multiple hobbies, each one with significant start up costs. He is into windsurfing, gocarting, and woodworking. The Go-carting is the most expensive hobby by far, but he stopped doing it when the recession started. That makes me worry less, because I know that he is willing to put things on hold until he has the means to do it.

I once had a neighbor that was into building planes that actually fly (yes costly and very dangerous!) another neighbor was very into motorbikes - but sadly he lost a daughter due to an accident

my dh HAD a motorcycle but when we had our first child, I made him (with guilt) get rid of it. It''s too damn dangerous (imo). I lost 2 friends in 2 different motorcycle accidents and am not a fan of that hobby

Same here. Can''t take FI into a Best Buy or Sony store. He always picks up the most expensive thing in there.

Golf. But my DH is very generous, and never says anything to me about my spending (and I don''t work) so I would never say anything to him about what he spends on golf. It''s more annoying that it takes up a whole day - 5 hours on the course, usually an hour there and back for his favorite course.
