Does this sound like a kidney stone... ?

O...M...G...

Last weekend I had a minor pain on the left side of my back, down toward my hip (or, more accurately, around the spare tire area where that extra plate of french fries likes to stay... ). Yesterday afternoon I started to have more pain in the same area, although wider spread and MUCH MUCH MUCH more severe. The pain is not as bad when I am lying down or sitting, although when I try to get up it is EXCRUCIATING. It literally took me an hour to be able to get out of bed this morning, and last night the poor boyfriend had to lift me up so I could go into the bathroom to take a whiz (sorry if TMI, but just trying to express how debilitating this is).

So... is it possible I just pulled some sort of muscle? I worked out both last weekend the day before the minor pain, and also this weekend both Friday and yesterday. But I did the same workout I always do and I never have had anything like this before...?

Also, if it was a kideny stone, would the pain be constant? Would it have gone away for several days and then come back? Would movement affect it?

Any medical advice, experiences of your own, etc., that you want to share will be much appreciated! And if you have any pain meds, please feel free to pass those along too... ;(

My husband had a kidney stone about a year and a half ago and he was in terrible, awful pain for a week before he finally went to the doctor and ended up having surgery to get the thing out. Your pain sounds very similar to what he described, Dee. Do you have a doc you can call to at least call in a pain med script for you? Or you could swing by the ER... medical attention is definitely necessary, methinks.

TO ME, it sounds likely that it could be, OR a kidney infection if nothing else. I'd seriously call the doc ASAP and get in to make sure. Is there blood when you pee?

Oh Monnie, I'm so sorry hubbs had to go through that!

Did he have to stay in the hospital in the beginning or just for the surgery? I have a potential job interview in another city this week, and I have to make it there...

Seriously, I hate to be a big ol' weenie about all this, but I survived a torn ACL/MCL/meniscus/bone bruise fall down a mountain and a ankle broken in three places without so much as an asprin, and this is MUCH worse. If somebody showed up here right now with some morphine, I swear I'd take it.

Alright... maybe I do need to go to the ER. I will feel utterly RIDICULOUS if they tell me I just pulled a muscle!

Ame, well in keeping with this whole TMI theme... it's also that time of the month, so I don't really know... Ha! Is there anything else I can do to make this difficult?!

Get to the ER room.

I ended up spending 8 hours in ER with my DD last sunday (brought my kindle & ipad and both ran out of battery power - so bring something with you for the waiting  ) and while there, there were 2 young men who came in with kidney stones. Both were put on IV to help flush fluids thru and then sent with strainers to 'catch' whatever may pass. They were also given IV meds to dilate the ureters (tubes where urine passes thru) so if there was a stone passing, it would reduce the pain.

Not sure if they got morphine, but you can always ask for some! They were definitely doped up on something tho - one was hilariously giddy thru the ordeal!

Dee, he had an outpatient sort of surgery. They put in a stent first and were hoping it would pass through that after they blasted it with a laser or something, but it didn't work and he had to go back for another round a week after that. It was a pretty harrowing experience for him. I think you might want to go to the ER today. Even on the off chance that it's just muscle-related they can give you something for pain management to get you through your job interview, right?

Dee, it certainly sounds like it could be. I've never had one myself but urology is my specialty and we blast lots of the little blighters at work on a weekly basis. Do get it checked out, at least for some pain management if nothing else! If the pain has subsided it's possible you have passed it if it is a stone, but at any rate an x-ray will see where it is, and the surgery to have it eradicated is relatively minor and straightforward.

Good luck, and keep us updated!

Please go to the ER or urgent care ASAP.

My husband had some severe pain while we were on vacation in Las Vegas a few years ago. We called a doctor to the room (never do that, it's expensive), and he thought it might be kidney stones. He sent us to the ER.

After various tests, they eventually did a scan. It wasn't kidney stones, it was a burst appendix. So, emergency surgery, etc.

And, my hubby has a high tolerance to pain. He said the pain from this was worse than getting shot.

I don't think the location of pain sounds correlative to "that time". It sounds Kidney related, and I do agree, Urgent Care or ER would be worth visiting. Don't wait because you really don't want to be in MORE pain and in more urgency.

It does sound like it might be a kidney stone; when they move is when you are feeling that excruciating pain. I had one and I thought it was worse than labor pains. I was given a strong pain killer to get me through to the point it was finally out. I agree that you probably should go to an emergency room so they can confirm it and guide you the rest of the way. In the meantime, try to drink tons of liquid because that moves it along and finally out.

Back from the emergency room adventure... They said if it was a kidney stone it had likely passed at that point because the pain was subsiding (so it was only a 9.8 on the 1-10 scale, as opposed to the 9.9 I had dealt with all night  ). More probably, they said it could be a ruptured disk, but that would become more apparently in terms of a diagnosis over time. They gave me valium, narco, and some different anti nausea drug than the one I'd tried before, and I'm supposed to take them all and hope for the best. So far so good; the pain isn't any *worse* (which I'm going to look at as *better*) and I haven't puked any of the pills us yet, so that's a good thing. But I still can't lift my left leg (which is the side the pain is on) to go up the stairs normally. Oh well, one thing at a time!

Thank you Enerchi, Andi, Lotus and Meezermom for helping me. Sorry I didn't have time to respond until now--I had my ipad in the ER but they kept a steady stream of people through and my best friend came with me so I was a little tied up, but I do appreciate it!

I just came out of hospital after my second attack of Kidney Stones. It started first thing in the morning (about 5am). It was a pain in my lower back on the left side and in the front lower left side. It would come in waves then stay for about 1 hour before easing and then coming back again. I couldn't sit or lie down as the pain became excruciating. My daughter called an ambulance as I couldn't even talk in the end. I had a scan which confirmed the stone was passing down the tube from my Kidney to my Bladder. They were going to operate but after 3 days the pain subsided and I was allowed to go home with medication in the hope I would pass the stone myself.

I've been pain free for over a week so I don't know if the stone has passed or not. I'm hoping it has because they said I have to have it surgically removed if it doesn't. :((

I wouldn't wish Kidney Stones on my worse enemy. Its the worst pain ever... and that includes childbirth!

Oh no DeeJay, my SIL has them and I know they can do a U/S to see them if you have them. I am sorry!!! I hope you feel better soon!

So glad you got it checked out. I hope the meds kick in soon.

Poor thing! I have had them twice and I will concur that it is the worst pain I've ever had! One of the times they did give me morphine and it was the most amazing painkiller! The other meds made me sick, so I have a problem if I get another one. Hope it will just pass on its own.. and SOON! You may have a problem with your interview if it doesn't!

DeeJay- so glad you went! Whew - what relief that you got attention and medication AND that its probably passed! So glad that your pain is subsiding - even if it is slight, its still a tad better.

Hang in there - take things slowly and drink LOTS of water. I know it sounds like the worst idea ever, but really, passing that stone is key and if it's already gone, just getting your self back in order is the thing now.

Keep us updated!

I'm glad you got checked out! It sounds to me like that's what it was - I had a kidney stone 10 years ago, and it was the most horrible, excruciating pain I've ever felt. It would come in waves, hang around for awhile, then subside. I was pretty young when I got it, around 16 or so, and the pain reduced me to tears on a few occasions. At one point a wave of pain hit and I was just paralyzed by how much it hurt, so I lay writhing on the ground for a good amount of time.

Hugs to you, I hope the worst of your pain has passed!!

okay, that sounds awful! Hope you are feeling better though!!

I have spent a day in the haze of oxycodone and valium...oy. No more of that crazy sh!t for me! It helped get me through the night last night, and this morning the BF dosed me up at 5:30 when he left for work, thinking that by the time I got out of bed at 8:00 I would feel better. Well I did--physically. My metally--blech. :knockout: I may take some valium before I go to bed tonight because it seems to help the muscle spasms (which is where the real pain comes from) but once again the pain pills have proven to be un-takeable for me. I guess the good news is I could never be an addict, LOL.

Thanks all for the (virtual) handholding and support. I swear, even when I went through all that terrible knee stuff the pain was only a FRACTION of this!

Oh DeeJay, you poor thing. I am relieved you are feeling better and hopefully passed the stone(s). My dh had kidney stones (and surgery) Dec 2009/Jan 2010 and it was the worst pain ever. He has a very high threshold for pain and he was vomiting and nauseous and it was just horrible. Sending loads of healing dust your way!

Glad you are feeling better Dee Jay! The power of modern medicine, eh?? Hope it just continues.... to subside... to .... nothingness....

So glad you are feeling better DeeJay! I agree, it is the worst pain ever. I remember not being able to stand or sit and just pacing and doing a lot of deep breathing. I am allergic to morphine, I found out with that bout of kidney stones. May this be your one and only bout of them! It has been almost 17 years since I had them!

How about a consult with your own physician to try and determine exactly what this is all about? The pain sounds awful! After a few days, seems there needs to be a definitive definition to what is causing the problem. Didn't sound like the ER was totally convinced that it was a kidney stone and if it was, how long is reasonable for it to pass? If you're not feeling a lot better by tomorrow, I'd try to see someone else.

Hope you are able to rest a bit better tonight without the pain/valium combo. That stuff can be as bad as the curse that's causing all of this! Take care of yourself and let us know how you feel tomorrow.

D.J...hope you are feeling better.

How are things now, DeeJay? Are you feeling vastly improved and little discomfort at this point? Hope you are on the mend!

Hello everyone! :wavey: Happy to report I am still alive here!

Doc says it's hard to say what it is/was because if it was a stone and passed there's no way to know. I still have a fair amount of discomfort though (but I was able to put my own socks on this morning, so I'm counting that as a plus!!! ). One of the women in my office swears by a chiropractor near my house so I'm going to give that a shot on Saturday morning. And amazingly my insurance actually covers it!

One thing that really turned me off from my doc BTW was that when we talked about the myrid of drugs they gave me in the ER she said, oh, the paid meds make you pukey? well just stop taking those and TRIPLE the valium. And don't worry if I need refills, she can give me as many as I want. It's a good thing I am not inclined to go that route or I'd be well on my way to Betty Ford right now!

that is the most important part.. :!: :appl:

Glad to hear that you are feeling a bit better. It's amazing how freehanded these docs are with Valium and the like. I guess each poison has its drawback but you'd hate for someone to develop an addiction where one didn't exist before but it happens every day. Let's hope the pain gets better to where you only need a Motrin or something!
