titles bother you? (sorry, it wouldn't let me type the whole thing and I couldn't think of a shorter way to say it).

I think they say this is against "netiquette" but I'm not sure I believe in "netiquette" and I don't believe in "netnannying."

Having said that, I personally don't like it.

To me, it says, "Look at my thread! It's more important than all the others!"

I'm not asking anyone not to do it (I'm just not going to do it myself).

I'm just curious if it bothers anyone else?

Re: Does internet "shouting" (all capital letters) for threa

I don't consider it shouting so it doesn't bother me for that reason, but it does bother me to a certain extent because I find all capitals harder to read.

Ditto, Mayerling.

Re: Does internet "shouting" (all capital letters) for threa

I am old school internet geek and it really really bugs me!
It is rude!

Re: Does internet "shouting" (all capital letters) for threa

Doesn't bother me at all, never has. I use caps on specific words and phrases for emphasis.

Same here. I would also find it difficult to read a whole thread in capitals.

I had to look for an example before I could answer this.

Apparently it doesn't bother me if it's in a short title - LOL!

IT BOTHERS ME A LOT IN LONGER STUFF, I.E. IN TWEETS OR CHAT/SOCIAL STREAM COMMENTS. :wink2: I do a lot of editing as part of my job, so I'm pretty sensitive to punctuation, word choice, and how things are presented generally.

YES! I mean "yes".

I would have just gone with "IS THIS OKAY?" ;p

It annoys me, but not to the point where I won't read the thread if it looks like it could be interesting.

Re: Does internet "shouting" (all capital letters) for threa

I don't really mind - if people want the emphasis then fine, it depends on the wording or meaning of what they are writing.

Probably the reason I don't mind is because although my mother has never really got to grips with text messaging, its her favourite form of communication, she always writes things in capitals and I do find it really comical imagining her shouting it, for example this is from my phone -

PLEASE KEEP THE RHUBARB FOR ME, MUM.

Although I suspect this is only funny to me

Re: Does internet "shouting" (all capital letters) for threa

You guys would all go NUTS if you read the emails I got every day from my clients. They ONLY type them in caps. But they're all kind of computer retarded.

Re: Does internet "shouting" (all capital letters) for threa

I don't mind it for emphasis for words in posts. I do it.

I just don't like thread titles like HELP ME MAKE A DECISION ABOUT THIS RB BY NOON!

I usually want to "netnanny" people who do that but I never do.

I think netnannying is worse.

Re: Does internet "shouting" (all capital letters) for threa

All-caps don't bother me for emphasis, but all-caps sentences are terrible. It does seem like less technologically savvy people have a tendency to "shout" using all-caps.

Re: Does internet "shouting" (all capital letters) for threa

It bugs me too. It just seems unnecessary and it does "sound" like shouting to me.

ETA: It doesn't bother me if people use all caps for emphasizing a few words, but I don't like it when people use them for a whole post. As someone else said, it's harder to read.

Re: Does internet "shouting" (all capital letters) for threa

The way we did it in college was: x (emphasis added).

That's actually my favorite way to do it. It's kind of boring but it works and you don't have to use all capitals. I have a hard time reading all capitals.

Re: Does internet "shouting" (all capital letters) for threa

I don't really care about it. If its something interesting to me, i'll read it. If not, i'll move on. Doesn't matter to me if its all caps or not.

Re: Does internet "shouting" (all capital letters) for threa

No, it really doesn't bother me at all.

Re: Does internet "shouting" (all capital letters) for threa

It's annoying to me. It's fine to capitalize a word for emphasis, but not everything in a title or post.

Just like anything else, not everyone knows etiquette...or netiquette in this case. I think it's nicer to _emphasize_ using underscores.

Re: Does internet "shouting" (all capital letters) for threa

It didn't bother me till I was taught that it should.

Now it bothers me.

Re: Does internet "shouting" (all capital letters) for threa

I don't necessarily find writing in all caps rude, I just find it obnoxious to read the font.

This.

Re: Does internet "shouting" (all capital letters) for threa

I have read where some people who have arthritis or limited mobility of their hands, type in all caps to avoid having to use the shift key.
