Oh my God. Is anyone else following the Roman Polaski case?

I find the details to be disgusting. Seriously, they are hard to stomach. And now big name Hollywood producers (his peers) are standing up for him. Signing petitions for his release and speaking out on his behalf. They want him to be free after the crime against a child he willfully committed.

It makes me sick. And it makes me very pissed off. I will never watch another movie directed by these "men".

Yes, the whole thing makes me sick. Especially since I have children that age. I can''t imagine them being taken advantage of like that and not wanting the adult severely punished.

I agree. It''s awful. For the past 30 years, he''s avoided serving time for this crime because he fled the country. What a coward.

The arguments in his defense are stomach-turning equivocations that basically translate straight out of "Animal Farm" - all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. His pain, his art, his stature - none of these excuse his (self-admitted) crimes. Kate Harding has a very direct piece about this up on Salon: I couldn''t agree with it more.

I''ve always felt he was a disgusting piece of filth. Drugging and sodoming a 13 year old, seriously

I''m equally P.O.''d at her mom though.

Yes I agree, it''s awful. He should be let off because he successfully hid from the law for over 30 years?!? Surely now the punishment should be worse.

I find it dispicable

I think what makes it worse is the fact that people are defending him and arguing for him. Why???? What could their reason possibly be? He''s a rapist and pedophile and he has earned his jail time like any other common criminal. He''s not special, he''s a sadist.

I gag over the details. They are painful to read. But the fact that well-respected members of the creative arts community are speaking out in his defense set me over the top. Martin Scorsese. Woody Allen. These aren''t no named fools, these are big time directors with clout. I''m confused as to why they would want to attach themselves to this scum bag. Obviously Woody Allen is questionable...but Scorsese?

I believe that people should be furious over this case...and they should punish those who see no harm in drugging, raping and sodomizing a child. Boycott films, whatever. Maybe in their little "directors club" these questionable morals can be shoved aside...but in the real world where the rest of us live, this is a felony.

There is no excuse for what he did. We only know about this one incident - how many other children did he abuse that nobody knows about because they were too frightened or ashamed to tell anyone? I don''t care what he went through when he was a child or how old he is now. He ought to be locked up permanently. I never thought he was that good of a director, either. There are dozens of directors who are far better.

Italia, I am so angered by this situation that I can't even discuss it rationally, I can literally feel my blood start to boil when I think of these people coming out in support of this man, after what he did to that child, I am so furious that I feel as if I don't make sense when I try to talk about it, so since you have said everything I feel, I will just say that I am in complete agreement with your posts. Ok, I have to go take some deep breaths and try to calm down.

I was watching the news, and they did a poll on the streets and a man (who seemed to be about Polanski''s age) said "he''s a brilliant artist and shouldn''t have to be punished for a mistake he committed years ago".

SAY WHAT??? I went ballistic. Who CARES if he''s a brilliant artist, he RAPED a CHILD! And "mistake" my @$$, it''s a felony! You know what they do to child molesters in prison? That''s ALL he deserves, "brilliant artist" or no.

Sorry, I can''t discuss this rationally either. It makes my blood boil.

I was listening to NPR last night, and a woman they interviewed brought up a really good point. Yes, the victim wants this to go away (and I wish she was able to have some annonymity in this), but rape - especially raping a child - is not only a crime against the victim, it is a crime against our community. If we make an exception for this man because he is "special," what message does that send? If a man who ADMITS to raping a child is given nothing more than a tap on the wrist, we are so devaluing the life and mental health of our children it''s criminal. He ran because he didn''t think the judge would honour the deal. Tough noogies. That''s what an appeal is for. Given the fact that he fled the country, I do think his punishment should be more severe. He hurt a child, ''fessed up to it, then ran away saying "I''m special, you can''t get me!"

I only wish there was a way to give the victim more privacy.

I can''t believe they won''t suppress the name! In australia an application can be made to suppress the name of a victim (or accused) when the crime was committed when they were a child. The poor girl.

I don''t really know much about it as we are not getting as much coverage in Australia but it does sound absolutely disgusting. Rule of law, anyone?

I haven''t looked at all the details. What I''ve read is bad enough. All people are supposed to be EQUAL under the law. Everyone has to follow them. No one is "special" and above it all.

Who cares if it happened last year or a century ago. He did it. He ran. He knew it was wrong and chose to do it anyway.

With all the attention this is getting I think they should make an example of him. Charge him with everything they can come up with and lock him up until the day he dies.
People need to see that no one has enough money/power/skills/etc. to be exempt from following the laws.

It''s so disgusting. As others said, it doesn''t matter that it was 30 years ago, he still committed a heinous crime, and needs to be punished for it. I can''t believe that anyone would stand up against this man coming to justice, even if he is a genius. Although he did have to deal with the horrible murder of his wife, that doesn''t excuse him from being responsible for his disgusting actions. I sincerely hope that the victim is able to go through this time with as little difficulty as possible.
