I think a lot of people have no idea how movie theaters work. They don''t make anything from ticket sales--almost all of that money goes to the studio. Almost all income comes from the sale of food and beverage. So, ethically speaking, sneaking food into a theatre is kind of the equivalent of dining and ditching at a restaurant. With that being said, I''m guilty of sneaking in food in the past. 99% of the time I order my food and drink there though.

I learned this in my college film class too. Makes buying overpriced snacks more tolerable.

Well, if I was absolutely not going to buy from them- even if I had a treat with me or not.. what are they going to do? HOLD A GUN TO MY HEAD AND MAKE ME BUY FROM THEM? Nah. If I want to sneak it in, I will.

I was just going to say the same thing. I''m in this industry so I know how it works--the theatres make their money on concessions. I get into theatres for free because of my job so I try to always buy a little something from the concession stands but I agree that the prices are INSANE and I usually end up bringing my own bottle of water in my bag.

I usually pay the $5 for a small popcorn, but that's it. I'll still keep bringing in my bottled water and candy.

Elrohwen, I saw that article about them banning outside treats too, and that's what made me think of this topic. I had no idea that it was even allowed at one point. I've just always thought it wasn't!

When we go, we will go out to lunch or dinner first so we won''t get too hungry while we''re at the movies. We almost always buy popcorn and a drink anyway. ha ha

I have to admit I reevaluated my pattern of buying the whole shebang there when I calculated that they were selling bottled water at my local theater for $48 a gallon.

Totally. Although, DH always wants popcorn, so we end up getting popcorn. I usually sneak in candy since they don''t always have what I like. I''ve snuck in soda before...although last time I tried to put a soda with a lid and straw in my purse. Not my brightest moment...

I used to go to the local dollar movie, which now has been raised to 1.50 to 2.00,but currently the selection is so bad with all the "b"choice movies rather then the really good popular movies that are going straight to video after their regular movie house run(who can afford 8 bucks for a movie?)...as for food...I bring in candy bought at the local dollar store(which is next door to the theater!)My friends and I go to the video store more often lately and use the 2 for 1 coupons and have a double feature at one of our homes...much cheaper then the theaters and it saves alot on movie tickets, food and gas costs for a night out!

BF and I buy our movie passes at costco ahead of time: a voucher of 2 adult admissions, 2 drinks and a popcorn for the same price as 2 tickets at the theater door.

It''s like we get the popcorn and drinks for free!

I usually pop popcorn and put it in a plastic baggie and bring it in. I have even brought cans of pop and sometimes candy. I was not aware that theaters make most of their money from the concessions. Hmm.

Yep if we''re going to get food there, we definitely bring it in. It''s so expensive to buy there.

I do but I don''t sneak it in they legally can not stop you from bringing in snacks in movies in Australia it is anti- competition.

Yes! Working at a movie theatre for years and getting free popcorn and drinks totally spoiled me...plus my parents even did this with us when we were really young. I have fond memories of stopping at a local drug store to stock up on twizzlers before seeing Home Alone.

I don''t feel too bad either because I still usually buy popcorn when I''m there.

This information may have just changed my life.
Thank you!

I have never snuck refreshments into the theater. However, I seldom see movies in the theater...in fact, the last one I saw was Four Christmases last year with my mother. Prior to that, only went to those "dinner and a movie" theaters where you''re drinking and eating dinner/appetizers anyway. I''m not a big "let''s go see a movie" person. I''d rather watch them in the comfort of my own home at my leisure.

We buy popcorn and drinks but guilty of smuggling candy, can't justify 50¢ vs $4.50 with limited variety especially when you bring your kid's friends, it really adds up!

I don''t. Never will. I feel that a lot of theatres are struggling.. and that is how they make their money. Plus with the crud coming out of hollywood- they aren''t always filling the theatre seats.

So I personally go, and everytime I do, I buy at least a soda and popcorn, even if I am not hungry... and I just don''t eat it all.
