do you use your fireplace during the winter?

During the holidays we use the one in the great room, but the other fireplace never gets used.

Yes we do! DH made a fire last weekend and it was so cozy :)

We have one and we use it in winter time, but I must admit, we use it less now than in years past. It''s me who cleans it. Not my favorite job, and my husband has a tendency to build big huge roaring fires, and he forgot to close the screens two winters ago and it spit out and burned a tiny spot in my new wall to wall carpet

. I''ve limited our use of the fireplace since then. But I do love when it''s lit and it''s cold and snowy outside.

We don''t use the wood burning fireplace in our city house because it smokes up the room. We converted the fireplace at the lake home to gas, and use it a lot in cooler weather.

I wish we had a fireplace! If we had one we would definitely use it.

Ugh. Fireplace.

We sued over our fireplace - the guy who flipped our house sold it to us as having a gas fireplace, but what he did was put in a gas line/gas fire logs without checking to see that our fireplace was decorative only, meaning no venting. The small claims was a mess and we have yet to see any $, so I think instead of putting the 2-3k to get the fireplace in operable shape, we're just going to take the gas line out and put in an electric sometime this fall/winter.

It makes me sad though - we had a rental before we bought this house with a wood burning fireplace and I absolutely loved it. Still, I'm looking forward to just having the flickering light and the heat blower of the electric on the really cold days this winter.

ETA: I did get DH an outdoor fireplace/pit for his birthday and we've used that several times this year. I looooove sitting around the fire at night and just listening to the logs crackle and the breeze rustle through the trees. It's like camp without the camp.

We will as soon as I decide what type of fireplace screen I want. I believe our area isn''t allowed to have wood fireplaces after a certain year but we''re grandfathered in for now. Recently, I removed the gas logs to have it be wood burning. It''s just one of those things that can''t be reproduced with fake logs....the crackling and smells of wood burning. We won''t be using it that much though because we''re in San Diego and we have our tv above the fireplace.

Our house has a fireplace and when we were renovating it last year, we found brand new, still in the box, gas logs in the basement left by the previous owner. We had the gas line run and I''m really looking forward to "fires" in our fireplace this winter. It doesn''t get very cold where I live and DH is always hot, so I may have to turn the heat off in the entire house to get him to turn it on!

Ahmmm our place was built in 1908 or something like that. It has these COOL coal burning fire places. So no. But it LOOKS cool and takes up precious wall space

Allison, could we come to your house for Christmas?

This is the second house we have owned and never have used our fireplace. Kinda sad now that I think about it.

Wow Allison, that is one nice picture of the fireplace.

It is a requirement for me to have a fireplace in my house. Now if I could only afford a house with one in the master bedroom...heck, even in the master bath.

For me a fireplace makes a house a home.

Miracles, you are a lady after my own heart! I so agree with that! We have a fireplace in our master bedroom but the chimney was removed years ago so we can't use it but one day we will have the chimney rebuilt so we can use this fireplace.

I grew up in a house heated exclusively by a real honest to goodness old fashioned fireplace

It's funny seeing so many people refer to gas fires or stoves as fireplaces - in Ireland, if gas is involved in any way shape or form, or if there's a stove involved, then it's not a fireplace! We have a gas fireplace in our home now and it's just not the same

Alj that picture brings me right back to my childhood! It looks like a fairytale Christmas!

I agree with that too Del, a fireplace has to involve wood or coal and be open - not a stove - and gas isn''t the same to me either.

i never heard of only being able to use fireplaces on certain days! Where is that?

we build bonfires in our yard whenever possible, then in the winter have our fires. the fireplace is a big old stove looking thing in our basement- kind of weird placement, but nice to have. we are hoping to make it more of a "rec room" around the fireplace. in the mean time we just use it to heat our home, and sometimes sit by it.

growing up, we ALWAYS had a fire going. we had a gas fireplace and i can always remember coming downstairs on Christmas morning to a fire.

Hardly ever use it. Too messy to clean up and I don''t like polluting the air. We keep a bunch of candles in there, nicely arranged, and burn those sometimes.

Every home we''ve ever lived in has had a gas fireplace and YES we used each one all the time. Our current home has a wood fireplace and we don''t plan to use it and put our TV in front of it.

We don''t have a fireplace but if we did, I doubt we''d use it. I LOVE the idea of using it, but I have a weird phobia about fire. I think I''d be too paranoid about something bad happening to really enjoy it.
