I love a good fire in winter time. I like to get it going, get out some hot chocolate, and some kettle corn, and sit with a comfy blanket and the dogs and just enjoy the evening. We sometimes just sit and tell stories.

You are nuts. If I had a fireplace I would definently use it. I wish I had one. I like the whole idea of waking up on Christmas morning with a fire burning. And I love the smell.

Do you not use yours because you don''t have wood? I can see the wood being a PITA

Yes! In fact, we already have - it''s been a pretty cold October so far.

I love having a fireplace...how could you not use yours DF?

Yup! At least once per winter anyway. We have an authentic pot belly stove. It''s a huge monstrosity and it''s quite a pain to get going. You have to open the flu, so the smoke doesn''t fill the house, and get the fire going like you would on a coal BBQ pit. But we have fun doing it and it really works!

it is only legal to use the fireplace on certain days in our area.

We do use it, but isn''t that what my hubby is for?

absolutely!

We''ve used it practically every night this October. It''s been cold! We also use it almost every night in the winter except when our real Christmas tree is in the room. It goes next to the fireplace so it would dry out too much if we did then. I can''t believe you''ve never used yours DF!

Ditto this! We use ours all the time -- real wood burning one -- and love it. It's not eco-friendly, though, which is why DancingFire may be restricted in the times he can use his.

ETA: I think DF started this thread just so he could use the phrase "22 year old virgin" in a thread!

I try to keep our carbon footprint down.

That''s one reason we have never used our fireplace.

Well ours is gas and in the fall we use it a lot instead of the furnace. I figure it's going to be one or the other so it may as well be the fireplace with the nice ambiance.

we have a gas one but i don''t like using it because it''s SO noisy, when the gas is turned on it makes a long humming sound...anyone else experience this and know how to get rid of it?

Ours is gas and when we turn it on I feel like we are burning money. Anyone have any idea how much it really costs to burn gas? We have not had ours on for about 10 years.

Oh I wish I had a fireplace! That sounds so warm and cozy!!! I had one in a house I lived in with some friends several years ago...and we used in all the time! It sets such a good atmosphere.

Fire that baby up, DF!!

I think they DO make gas fireplaces that are more efficient at heating the room than older ones which just sent almost all the heat up the stack.

If I were building a new house I''d look into it.

I miss fires.

We have 2 fireplaces. B won''t use the one because it is in the media room. (I have to admit I see his point)

The other is in the living room and we haven''t used it yet. Been in the house for 19 months now.

I''d love a nice fire with all the lights off. Fluffy blanket. Hot chocolate. (maybe a nice wine and truffles)
MMMMMMmmmmmmmm.

We have to have our chimney cleaned and inspected. The home inspector suggested it was a good idea to do before using it.

We have an antique looking newer woodburning stove (very efficient and lower on emissions) on a raised stone hearth in our family room...we LOVE it. I love the smell of a real fire and the warmth it radiates, both the real warmth and the ''warm fuzzies'' of feeling cozy on a cold day!

Sometimes if it''s a gray yucky day, I will light some jar candles and put them in the stove, to give it a warm glow...anyone with a wood burning fireplace can do that too! It looks nice and no mess!

We also have an electric fireplace in our dining room...sometimes I''ll take out the logs and use candles in it too, especially during the holidays...I love candle light and a nice fire during the holidays!

DF, can you get a ''fake log'' looking candle holder to use in your fireplace? Or can''t you use candles during fire season either? I have a really cool looking ''fake log'' candle holder...it looks like 4 logs, stacked up, but has places to hold votive candles...it hold 8 candles and gives a really nice, warm glow.

Same here DF, we have to check to see which days we can use it.

My parents have one and used to use it when we were little, but it''s been years now since it''s been used.

JD has a wood stove out in the back shed. I love the smell of burning wood. We used it last year to roast hot dogs and make smores and it was fuuuun!

At my parents'' home we do. It''s FREEZING there - even with central heating. When it''s -30 outside (NOT counting the wind chill) that fireplace sure feels good!

don''t know what kind of fireplace we have in the house
33.gif
i know there is a gas pipe going into the fireplace.

I don''t have one at my apartment, but we use the fireplaces at my parents'' house all the time. They are newer gas fireplaces, and they aren''t loud, plus they heat up a room nicely.

No because kids have asthma. But a gas firefplace sounds cool.

Got you beat -- my fireplace is a 82-year old vrigin!

i''ve always been concerned about the safety of my chimney since''s never had a chimney cap, plus the firebox is huge and most likely inefficient.

I am hoping to install a gas insert one of these years however... I love the new remote-controlled gas logs!

DF, if your fireplace is already plumbed for gas, it could be fairly inexpensive to get it fitted with an insert and gas logs. The periodic use restrictions (which don''t go into effect until Nov. 1 anyway) don''t apply to gas fueled fireplaces, so don''t be using that as an excuse!

Yep, same here. We never use ours. Everyone else, has to check to see which days they can use it.

Yes! I love a nice fire on a cold snowy or rainy day. We also have a pot belly stove in the basement that we fire up in the winter. It really helps to cut down on the heating bill... and it keeps our kitchen floor nice and toasty!

I seem to be in the minority...

I have one and never use it. It''s beautiful and a great focal point for the room. But it''s too much of a pain.

We don''t. We have a gas fireplace in a very large lounge room. The fireplace is really expensive to run because of the gas and very innefficent at heating up the house. Also the model of fireplace that was installed (before we owned the house) needs to be serviced regularly or is unsafe.

I really miss the wood fire at my old house.

Ditto, excatly!!! I thought I was the only one; glad I am not alone. We never use ours.
