Do you think wearing gold jewelry to the beach is considered a European thing?

i was reading Elle and a designer said wearing gold jewelry to the beach is very European. Do you think this is true?

Now that you mention it, I think it is... it just seems kinda like a European thing to do.

I have no idea. Mostly, I do not take anything I read in fashion magazines very seriously!

that and going to the beach topless :)

LOL, love it!
I have no idea, but it just seems like a bad idea... the most expensive thing I''ll take to the beach is my digital camera.
I''ve heard too many stories about jewelry being lost in the ocean :-P

Or necklaces causing horrible tan lines!

Very Chav if you ask me!

I agree that its very European.
Tried wearing jewelry to the beach only once.Lost a favorite sterling bracelet at Cannon beach in Oregon...If anyone finds it let me know!

Some people do in Britain, but it''s too bloody cold and nobody goes in the sea so won''t lose it!

umm..MikeAth, what''s with the off-colour joke as the sign off line?
I would probably re-consider that.

Has gone... didn''t mean to offend. Mind you broad generalisations about Europeans could be considered as such also

I have no idea if it''s a European thing, but I think it''s a stupid thing. Do you know how much jewelry is lost at the beach each year?? DH has an uncle that lives right near a really popular vacation beach (Daytona) and as a hobby walks with a metal detector on the beach. He finds a TON of jewelry, some of it really good jewelry too. I never wear anything valuable to the beach, ever.

Well, I wear jewelry to the beach and I''m not European but then I never get in the water over my knees, LOL.

It does leave some pretty funky tan lines though.

That''s true - my parents are from Europe, and they wear gold to the beach. I guess I thought it was a 70s thing, but their other Euro friends do it too.

If you mean "yellow" gold jewelry then i agree that europeans seem to prefer it. But to be honest, i never noticed it at the beach. At least not in Greece, Spain or a few of the smaller islands I''ve been to.

I do agree women going topless is considered normal. I also noticed the tiny swim trunks on the men which left nothing to the imagination.

As an interesting addendum to HH''s post, I just did an appraisal for a guy that makes his living with a metal detector at the beaches here.

He says that he averages $40-$45,000 income a year doing it, and loves his job. Blue skies, white sand, ocean waves...

I always thought it was a wild and craaaazy guy thing

Just came back from a week at the Jersey shore and funny thing is that I did notice a number of people with gold jewelry. It wasn''t the younger crowd who was wearing the gold, it was more the 35-ish and older. Mothers with teen kids were wearing several gold bracelets, earrings, and necklaces, not to mention a ton of rings while slathering on sun lotion (ugh!

) ALso, a few hairy guys with multiple gold chains around their necks and chain link bracelets as well.

Thank goodness we did not sit next to them, just observed as we walked along the beach trying to collect some shells..I won''t mention the women and men who were wearing swimsuits several sizes too small for them and too much hanging out (glad I hadn''t eaten yet!)

I think I need a new hobby! Start off as a hobby and see if I can turn that into a job!!

I think people just wear normal things like earrings and a wedding band - you wouldn''t wear a large e-ring or diamond bracelets or anything.

Personally I don''t wear jewellery to the beach.

ETA: Do you not go topless on the beach in the USA? It''s very normal in most of Europe - the UK not so much, but that''s because it''s so cold that you normally want to wear a wet-suit to the beach!

I''ve always gone topless when I lived in Italy - I''ve always thought it a bit odd that you can sit around on a beach with a load of friends in nothing more than a pair of bikini bottoms and it''s not regarded as erotic or anything like that, but 5 hours later you wouldn''t dream of going to the bar with the same group for apperitivo topless, but the little crop-top you wear is regarded as quite risque. I suppose it''s all context...

Oh no -- they do NOT go topless on beaches in the States. And most Americans (at least that I've met) think it's at least a little bit strange and overly sexualized to do so.

ETA: The wearing-jewelry-to-the-beach thing seems European to me, too, now that I think about it.

People in the US don''t (unless you''re at a nude beach). I don''t know why it never caught on here, but I do tend to find it more comfortable and I much prefer European beaches. No straps digging into shoulders or my back, no worrying if the top slips. It''s just all out there.
