What amazes me is the consistent amazement at the knowledge of children flying alone. Aside from new policies about who they can sit beside, it's hardly a new phenomenon, it's been going on for a long long time, and no one thought too much about it before now.

But then we live in a culture that is so freakily hyper-security conscious, that it seems we hardly let kids out of the house without a hazmat suit, riot gear, a giant can of Lysol, and a bullhorn anymore.

As well, in GB, if a woman goes to a male doctor and needs an exam of breasts, genitals, or rectum, a chaperone must be present. Doctors are thus protected against false accusations.

Well...this topic could be a separate thread of its own. I believe that Skippy said above that it's the same in the United States. Actually, I would think that in the US the individual states would regulate such matters. I know that it was usual for a male GYN to have a female nurse present when he examined me, but when I was trying to get pregnant my male doctor and I saw each other almost daily and developed a bond of trust. He knew I wasn't going to cry "rape" on him over a pelvic exam and he sometimes dispensed with having his nurse in the room if he didn't need her help for that day's procedure!

There is a gender problem with this whole chaperone thing.
Some doctors are gay so maybe a female chaperone should be present when a male doctor examines a male patient.
Some female gynecologists must be lesbian.

Since there is no way to know if a person is a closeted homosexual perhaps we should pay chaperones of both genders to be present at EVERY doctor visit, since health care is so inexpensive already.

This expectation of 100% safety, no matter what, gets kind of expensive and is frankly an absurd can of worms.

I'm not saying abuses will never happen but I think it is most reasonable to just trust doctors to be professional.
You can buy the safest car, follow all safety instructions, drive safely and still be killed; we don't let that stop us from driving.

I think there is a such thing as acceptable and reasonable risk.

At my Kaiser facility, there are always two people present during a pelvic or breast exam, the doctor's gender is irrelevant.

I support the ban. I personally prefer not to sit next to unaccompanied children on flights. This ban solves that for me. In fact, I prefer not to sit next to anyone on flights.

I personally would prefer not to sit next to children at all, except that they tend to take up little elbow room so that is a welcome benefit.

If I had a choice, I would ask that they swap the kids with the seats allocated to pretty stewardesses if there is such a need, so the kid can be away from the single man. I paid to fly, not to be made to shuffle around and be accused backhandedly of being a paedophile. Pretty stewardesses only please. Thanks.

It is insane that if I confirmed my seat in advance online, when I chose it based on a empty available aisle near the front of the plane that I need to move if a kid is popped into the seat beside me. I did not have the passenger manifest when I booked my seat thanks.

Otherwise I would sit next to a PSer. Cos from the photos, those are more likely to be hot. And if they are taken, at least they can talk shop.

No, I don't support or much care for this policy. I flew unaccompanied as a child from age 8, and usually one of the cabin crew sat with me, Not all through the flight, but whenever they had a little down time, one of them would just sit and chat with me for a little while, in my otherwise empty row of seats. I don't think I was ever seated next to a stranger, at least not that I recall.

I don't want to sit beside an unaccompanied child I don't know, for all sorts of reasons, so if it ever comes up, I'll tell the flight attendant that my bail conditions don't allow me to be within 10 metres of children or animals without supervision, I think...

also, my sneaky suspicion is that the airline thinks that a female passenger will be more tolerant and helpful with the kids!
