Propane, it''s faster!
We''ve got a gas grill and we use it to cook literally everything. It''s a little faster and it''s cleaner BUT..... the food doesn''t taste grilled. There''s really nothing like a good old fashioned Webber kettle grill. I don''t know though. The whole charcoal briquets and lighter fluid thing gets me nervous. I''d much rather press a button and walk away.

charcoal.... and I throw in mesquite wood bits to make it taste delicious

Charcoal with a chimney starter - no lighter fluid needed!

And, nice to see you again DF!

I love the taste of charcoal cooked food but the ease of propane. We do most of our BBQ on propane.

In the same boat here.

charcoal/wood burning smoker of course

I use a propane grill most for convenience. A wood/charcoal smoker when there is time to do it right.

me too! Charcoal tastes the best, but it''s so much easier to cook with propane!

exactly. Propane for convenience.

But charcoal for a real bbq experience - the food really does taste better imo.

Propane. Taste the meat, not the heat! (Hank Hill)

Propane or a real wood smoker. The charcoal leaves a very chemical-taste on the meat in my opnion.

Taste-wise, Charcoal of course.

Convenience and health, Propane (which is what I use).

Charcoal gives off some nasty carcinogens but it''s sooooo tasty.

I use both. Charcoal 95% of the time and propane for those dead tired, got home late nights cause it is fast. For those scared of fluid- don''t use it! A chimney will have your charcoal ready in around 30 minutes and no bad taste. If charcoal is leaving a taste on your meat you are probably using the quicklight variety and should switch to the regular. The quicklight has the starter fluid inside the briquettes so you still get the crappy taste of using starter fluid. And as far as carcinogens I have read several places that it is not the charcoal that has them, but rather the blackened meat surface itself. If you don''t burn it they don''t form supposedly.

but I prefer eating charcoal bbq food

We got a small Weber as a wedding gift - LOVE IT. We also use a chimney, never lighter fluid. The only bad thing is the time frame it takes. My husband is extremely, er, particular about his grilling. Boy takes an hour to get it started, and takes his sweet time actually grilling the food. The results are SO worth it though! The other night he did a pork loin... took 2.5 hours start to finish... but so so so good.

We'd like a propane someday for the convenience factor, though.

We do both. Propane for quick things and we bought this smoker/bbq called the Big green Egg. The think is freakin awesome. You dont use the nasty bricket
stuff but wood charcoal. No chemicals. We slow smoke chicken (250 for an hour) with apple wood that is so good it would bring you to tears! You can also
make great pizza on the thing. They have a website. There is a place for both, I think

For those that don''t like the taste that a lot of charcoal briquettes leave, switch to hardwood lump charcoal and a chimney starter--it has a much better flavor. My smoking is done with a combination of lump charcoal and wood chunks and you can''t beat the taste. Just be aware that lump charcoal burns at a hotter temperature than briquettes so you will have to learn to adjust cooking times.

Charcoal tastes better, but propane is SOOOOO much faster!

+1.

Charcoal. No contest. Luckily DH feels the same way because he does all the grilling.

ditto some day again when I have room for both
for now it is propane
Used to do it that way.
The best is actually over a hardwood fire :}
Sear it in the flames then suspend it over it to cook.

Charcoal, hands down. Unfortunately, my DH insists on using gas only because it''s easier (sigh)

Yep, the Komodo, Big Green, etc. are great. I''ve been contemplating one for the last few months. I just wonder if I''d have the patience to actually use it? I don''t need a 300 pound cooker that never gets used. I think what I''m really hoping for is to find a used one at a garage sale. Much easier to contemplate than $600 ya know.

We use hardwood lump charcoal when we grill. Nom nom nom nom nom.

Charcoal.

And, I''m sure I could have my ''Naturalized Texan'' status revoked, but I prefer my BBQ that way too. Ooops, did I say that out loud??

charcoal + mesquite wood bits = heavenly meat!

I guess I prefer the taste of charcoal but I can''t stand all the labot involved. So, propane for me! FI would disagree.

charcoal
