In general - depends on the country. Definitely not in the US.
Since most of PS-ers come from the US, I usually try to abstain from personal questions here (hopefully!).
But I do not consider "which type of toilet paper do you use?" a personal question...but to me it sound more like a promotion of certain brands...

I don't mind them, if I don't want to respond I don't! Most of the time I am too busy ogling pretty diamonds, to worry much about any one personal question thread though.
I just love the pics on this site, you all have such gorgeous bling that I find it hard to worry about a question that I wasnt asked specifically about. most q's here are put out to the general group, and do not address a specific person.

Diamonds are just too distracting!

I would mind if I was called out in some negative fashion on either participating or not in a personal thread, but I've never had that happen.

Actually...

I do find threads on where people store their jewellery to be in poor taste. Why people will post that they have two jewellery boxes, hide the good stuff in the dresser/laundry hamper/whatever is beyond me - this is a popular jewellery forum, why give potential thieves ideas on where to look on their next break-in?

The only good answer to that question IMO is a floor safe, no matter where one actually stores her sparklies.
