Thank you...

And, yeah, I can relate to your neighbor/daughter...when my niece was little, she had the same speech issue...I was "Auntie Bob!"

Auntie Bob-too cute!

I have a story about this.

As an adult I''d always liked my name fine.

Then, maybe four years ago, my dad sent me a LetterBomb(tm). i haven''t seen him since i was 16, but occasionally he mails me... interesting missives. In this one, he explained that he''d named me after his first girlfriend. And that he''d never told my mom this. I found this exceptionally creepy and have rather resented it. (DH now screens the mail from my dad for me.) And, since then, I''ve rather disliked my name on general principle.

Fun bonus fact: the exact same frigging thing happened to my husband. I kid you not. He is also named after his mom''s "first love", and his dad never knew. How freaky is that?! Of all the retarded things to have in common...

All I can say is, I would NEVER EVER name a child of mine after a past boyfriend. EVER.

My name is Danni''Elle.

I love my name but hated the spelling for a very long time. When I finally got around to asking my Dad why he and my Mum chose to spell my name that way he said that he was set on naming me ''Danni'' and Mum wanted to call me ''Elle''. Anyway, they bickered about it for months and couldn''t make a decision until they were telling a friend at a party about their predicament and she said ''why not just stick them both together'' which they did

My name is Ashley.

When I was younger, I didn''t care it --- I would make much rather been named Dorothy (don''t ask).

It wasn''t a popular name when I was a kid...so there weren''t many Ashley''s or Ashleigh''s or Ashlee''s running around. But the older I get the more I meet...it''s actually very popular now.

In the Jewish faith (thanks Dad) its often a tradition to name the next born with the first intial of the last family member to pass. My parents named me Ashley after my sister Amy who died shortly before I was born. So, in meaning behind my name makes me love it and appreciate it all the more.

Mine is weird: Emmalee (pronounced like "Emily")

"Emma" was my great-grandmother''s first name, and both of my parents'' middle names are "Lee," so they just put the two together.

NO ONE ever pronounces it right at first. They all want to say "EmmaLEE" and it drives me NUTS!!! It''s EMILY, g*&#@! it!!!!!
29.gif

It also bugs me to no end when people insist that it''s two words ("Emma Lee"), or one word but with the L capitalized (EmmaLee). Or, when people assume that "Emma" is my first name and "Lee" is my middle name, so they call me "Emma" (which is not even my name). Everyone who knows me just calls me "Emm" and that''s fine with me.

Yeah, you could say I have some issues with my name.

No. I have a very Hispanic name. My first name is Maria and I''m sure you can guess my last name.

Yuck.
I think Maria is a beautiful name. If I could have picked my own name, I''d either have picked Maria, or Annette.

I think Spanish names tend to be beautiful and mellifluous, personally. The only problem I ever see with them is when they are done the traditional way (tradtiional in some countries, anyway) that has you add your mother''s maiden name on the end, after your fathers, which can make some of them really really long. But then, this is ahead of its time, isn''t it. VEry feminist.
I wouldn''t have a problem with it if I lived in S. America still, because I would be called by my first and middle name, which I like the combo. But in America, most of us go by our first name so it kind of stuck. Plus not to mention that growing up in South Florida, everyone''s name happends to be Maria. I also have security issues all the time, because at some point someone with my same name didn''t pay their bill or did something stupid.

Long story short, I wish I had a less common name. Whether it would be Hispanic or not, it doesn''t matter!

Isn''t it funny how everyone dislikes their name because it''s either too common or too unique. Growing up my name was unique and I found it hard to be different. Now it''s a lot more common and I dislike that all of these little children have my name (Albeit spelled wrong, Mackenzie instead of McKenzie <-the right way).

The only thing that REALLY gets to me anymore is when people try to tell me that my first name is actually my last name. It is a very common last name, but on the other hand, my last name is NEVER a first name.... so why do people always try to switch them? It''s mind boggling to me.

My struggle with my own name has definitely given me a name complex when I think about names for my unborn children.

I''m okay with my first name - I don''t love it or hate it. However I have a very common first name, but a less common spelling so it is always spelled wrong. This especially drives me crazy when I write an email with my signature and the person writes back with the wrong spelling. My first name also gets paired with my middle name on occasion. I guess because they go well with each other. And on top of that, my last name has 3 names with spaces between them and capitalized (common from where my ancestors are from). So I always get a huge range of misspellings: merged into 1 name vs. 3, drop the first name and only use the 2nd two, adding an additional letter to the 2nd name, etc. I''ve always been told by friend how much they love my last name since it''s unique. I can''t stand it and whenever I have to show my ID, I always get odd looks or comments.

i hated my name growing up because people never pronounced it correctly and i always had to spell it, but as an adult, i grew to love it, i still have to teach people how to say it and spell it, but i''m ok with that now, my name is unique and more often i receive compliments on it

I have a Love/Hate relationship with my name. I like that is slightly uncommon but hate that it is also an "Older" name. My name is also used in Movies/TV for annoying characters so I guess that must mean something.

That is creepy.

But there''s no reason to dislike your name, after all. It''s you who give meaning to your name, and not the other way around, right? My mom has a really old-fashioned and kinda "heavy" sounding name but I love it because I think of her every time I hear it. I associate it with kindness and love and that makes her name beautiful to me, if you know what I mean?

To answer the original question, I like my name - Andrea. It''s really uncommon in my country and to this day I''ve never met another Andrea IRL. This fact used to bother me just a little bit when I was a kid, but now I like it.

My name is Lauren. I''ve always liked it, but I hated that i couldn''t shorten it at all for a nickname. Its a popular name supposedly, but I don''t know that many Laurens personally.
Elle, funny you should mention that, because my parents named me Laura specifically because it couldn''t be shortened. Some days I do wish I could have a nickname, but then I''m glad that my "official name" is the one I use day to day. I did have a teacher who called me Laur, but that doesn''t really count as a nickname.

Oh, and I''ve met way more Laurens than Lauras. I''ll send you over some of the ones I know

I''m comfortable with my name...I guess it fits. But, I HATE it when people shorten my name, ''Barbara'' to BARB. This just happened at my new doctor''s office yesterday, I signed in using my full name, but the receptionist called me back to the desk, ''Barb!'' - I really get upset when someone I don''t know just shortens it, even though I always write out my full name. Sometimes I correct them, sometimes I don''t...I DID correct the receptionist though! at least most people ASK what I prefer to be called. I NEVER shorten other people''s names without asking...major pet peeve! In fact, that was the inspiration for my ''screen name'' - instead of using the beginning part of my name, I used the END letters!

I used to be ''Barbie'' when I was little and my hubby and his parents call me that...my in-laws never had a daughter and to them it''s a term of endearment...I guess it''s better than ''Barb'' - which IMO sounds too close to ''Bob'' and why it bothers me so much!
I am Anne Barbara! My mum''s name was Barbara and she hated being called Barb too until she and my dad split, until then she was Barbie.

I dind''t used to like it, but now I do. My brother, sister, and I all have a "y" in our names....
(Don''t really want to say it since it might "blow my cover"
