Yikes. I have a friend named Diamond, and she is certainly not employed by a Gentlemen''s Club. It''s more popular within certain cultural groups than others, just like Jesus or Fatima.

BlackJade, I don''t know why you''d say that it isn''t common (though that''s a relative term). It peaked at 150 in 1999, then fell to 449 last year. That''s not super-high, but it''s not far behind Ruby and way out-ranks Pearl (which only cracked the top 1000 once in the past 20 years), Opal (hasn''t been in the top 1000 since 1960) and Sapphire/Saphira (which has never been in the top 1000 for at least the past 100 years).

I don''t think that naming your kid Diamond makes them a stripper, it''s just a stage name that stripper commonly choose.

I didn''t like my name growing up because even though it should be easily pronounced, people botch it up all the time because it is not a common English name (in fact, it isn''t a common Korean name either.)

I love Kimberly. My nickname, Kimi, which is what anyone who knows me calls me, suits me well. The only difficulty I''ve faced is that people think the name I go by is a bit childish (yes, people have actually said/implied this) but it''s all I''ve ever known and there was never a good transition point, so I keep referring to myself accordingly.

There''s no reason why you can''t. It''s never too late; put the name change at the top of your to-do list once your leg heals...Sort of a gift for all your suffering.

Growing up as a boomer, most of the girls I knew were Debbies, Brendas and Lindas and I didn''t know another Anne my age until highschool. Most of the gilrs that had Anne as part of thier name had it as a middle name. I was named after Anne of Green Gables and as a kid thought my name was hum drum. Now I really like my name and think it really suits me especially when I use my full name(I am so not hum drum tho). I''m happy with my name. It''s an old english name and quite unusual which means some people have difficulty remembering it, until they see it written and I had never met anyone with the same name as me until...... Once, when I moved into a new job I found myself in the position of having to caution a colleague which caused a great deal of tension between us. Previous to this, his wife had left him for another man and just after I arrived onto the work-scene, she had a baby with this new guy and it was all very difficult for my colleague to cope with AND to my horror, she named the baby the same name as mine It was the weirdest experience and couldn''t have been more awkward for either of us. My colleague was a great guy and we ended up working together a lot and we became good friends.

i like it, but it''s spelled wrongly 9 times out of 10. the thing that makes me chuckle about it, tho, is when i write to people and they write back ''dear karen....'' - as tho i''ve made a mistake and they''re going to correct it for me! (no folks - i really DO know how to spell my own name!)

Hahah, that''s funny! I have the same problem with my first name, Kristin. I''ll sign emails or notes with my name spelled plain as can be right there, and they''ll address the response to ''Kristen,'' ''Kirsten,'' ''Kiersten,'' ''Kristine''--you name it and it''s there, except my actual first name, that is!

Even my godparents messed it up once--gave me (get this) an I.D. bracelet with the name "Kristen" on it. I passed it on to a friend that spelled her name that way.

I didn't when I was younger, because it's a lil different (not like celebrity crazy baby name different!) - but as in, I've only ever met another girl with the same name once so far..
For my whole life up until maybe ~20, I introduced myself as my nickname, and this is how everyone knew me/called me - including family, co workers etc.

My name would be common in Europe, but not here.

Now that I'm older, yes I do like it quite alot. It's nice to have something different that when you introduce yourself, often people compliment on your name

Those closest to me (family, mates, Fi), I think will always know/call me by my nickname though - which strangely, is pretty different too and is not any more "normal" than my full name, lol!

My name is just right for me. It is beautiful and sounds like a ''normal'' English name (no offense to anyone who likes unusual names) however it is out of fashion and has been out of fashion for all of my life. Therefore, I do not meet people who have this name very frequently. To me this is ideal--to have a beautiful name which doesn''t sound obviously unusual, but which does not have half the room turning their heads around when it is called.

It also sounds very feminine and has a lovely meaning.

Again, no offense, but I personally would not like a name that sounded like a man''s name. (Although they don''t for long. As soon as too many girls get named a male name, whether it is something like ''Lesley'' or something like ''Madison'', the boys stop using this name. Again, I hope not to offend anyone. I chose those two names because they have both changed from male names to female names within my lifetime. There are many others.) Worse of all to me though would be to be named after something trendy, whether it was a soap opera star or a car. Don''t laugh. I do know people named after cars, brands of whiskey and all sorts of things of that nature.

Anyone up for naming their daughter Diamond? It''s interesting--I don''t know anyone who has that for a first name, although among women of a certain age there are lots of Opals, Rubys, Pearls and even some Sapphiras.
But I also don''t know anyone named Zirconia, which would be worse.

I like my name, but not the nickname version--Mandy. Ugh!

I had a friend in high school also named Amanda, and she worked in a children''s book store. There was a book on baby names that included people''s impression upon hearing a name. We loved ours: a tall, slim, elegant wealthy blonde. Well, I am already blonde and tall, and aspire to the remaining two!

I also really like my middle name, Joy. My father named me that when I was born, because he was so happy.

Same thing happens to me with my last name. It''s a slightly different spelling of a VERY common name. It has one letter difference and people are constantly saying it wrong (especially kids in the school classes) AND I''ve been asked multiple times if I''ve spelled it incorrectly!

I''m one of the gazillion Jennifers out there in the world. I hate that my name is so common. In fact, 2 of my best friends growing up were also named Jen. But I don''t hate the name itself. I contemplated changing the spelling when I was younger, maybe to something like Jennifyr to make it more unique. But that would be a pain to explain to everyone, so I''m sticking with it. My last name, on the other hand, is definitely uncommon and very ethnic (Romanian/Ukranian). So having one of the most common first names in my age group isn''t that bad.

Funny - I hate my first name - I did when I was a child and I continue to hate it til this day. I remember being in third grade and asking my teacher to call me Rachel, Cheryl, or Sharon - anything other than my name. They went with it and I actually have a little award that reads __real first name__ *Sharon* ___last name___. Crack me up!

I'm comfortable with my name...I guess it fits. But, I HATE it when people shorten my name, 'Barbara' to BARB. This just happened at my new doctor's office yesterday, I signed in using my full name, but the receptionist called me back to the desk, "Barb!" - I really get upset when someone I don't know just shortens it, even though I always write out my full name. Sometimes I correct them, sometimes I don't...I DID correct the receptionist though! at least most people ASK what I prefer to be called. I NEVER shorten other people's names without asking...major pet peeve! In fact, that was the inspiration for my 'screen name' - instead of using the beginning part of my name, I used the END letters!

I used to be "Barbie" when I was little and my hubby and his parents call me that...my in-laws never had a daughter and to them it's a term of endearment...I guess it's better than "Barb" - which IMO sounds too close to "Bob" and why it bothers me so much!
