I don't plan on wearing any expensive jewelry once I finish school. I will be working in mental health.

...? I'll be in mental health as well but I'm not sure how that plays a role in jewelry? Just curious as to why because it hasn't crossed my mind and I'd like to hear your thoughts.

The population I will work with are going through some of the worst moments of their lives. Some of them will be court ordered. I don't want my jewelry (or appearance in general) to be a distraction. Also, I feel it will put me at risk and don't want to be a target of any theft/violence. Maybe I am paranoid, but I will be working with some desperate people. If I was ever to go into private practice I still don't think I would wear my wedding set. People may not want to hand me over their hard earn money if they think I am just using it for jewelry. :cheeky:

ETA: I also don't plan to have any photographs of my family or anything too personal in my work environment.

It's probably very wise to consider your environment and act accordingly. Good choices.

Re: Do you feel self-conscious about your jewlry at work, or

I don't have a job right now, but I think I might feel self-conscious about it, depending on the work environment.

I left my first job, but I saw some large diamonds there (at least for my region). I wouldn't have felt weird about wearing mine there.

I am out of work now, but I kind of want to get a receptionist type of job in a doctor's office. I have my bachelor's degree and I made more money at my old job, so it seems like they are very hesitant about hiring me. I guess they feel that they will not be able to offer enough money for the position to make me happy, and that I will not stay for very long. In reality though, I left my old job because it was way too stressful, and I realized that I would rather be happy and working in a better environment, even if it means making less money. Since they are already unsure about why I want to take a pay cut, I think having a larger diamond (1 1/2 carats, but that is large for this area) will make them even more doubtful.

I have not received my e-ring yet, but I'm not sure about wearing it to interviews. I know that you generally should not wear anything very bling-y to interviews, but I want to wear it to show that I am engaged - I feel like my FF would feel bad if I took it off for certain occasions. I'm not married yet, so I don't have a wedding band to wear - so without my e-ring, I wouldn't have anything to put on my left ring finger. Then, if I did secure a job, I would feel weird about wearing it to work if I didn't wear it to the interview, you know?

I guess I'll just see what feels right when the time comes. :)

Re: Do you feel self-conscious about your jewlry at work, or

although i'm not married and my little collection is quite small compared to most on pricescope, i do feel a bit weird when i catch people looking at my rings at school (undergrad at rutgers) since nobody in my classes wears any fine jewelry. heck, most people come to class in their PJs! i get uncomfortable if people are looking at my rings kind of discretely.... however if someone says "i really like your rings, can i see them?" i enjoy showing them to girls and having blingtastic conversations with them.

Self conscious? Not really. I notice there are those with much bigger bling on the train or in my profession. I was at the doctor's office the other day, filling out some forms. One of the assistants noticed my ring, complimented it, and called the other assistant over. Now, she had a modest wedding set on, but she wore it with a blingy tennis bracelet and earrings. If she's not self conscious sporting carats and carats of diamonds, why should I?
