Very weird and awkward.... Pay $13 to lay on someone's lap for 3 minutes? 5 second hugs? Why..... Go to a bar, find a drunk companion. It would be wayyyyyyy less awkward. And maybe cheaper.

Do they not have friends who will gladly hug them for free?

Maybe he feels its a hassle to wine and dine people to become friends. It's sad that there is actually a market for this. But then again, I guess there is a market for everything. I heard the other day that an eye is a million dollars and a heart goes for 800k. Sad...

No, in the technical definition of the word, according to Merriam-Webster:

Definition of PROSTITUTION

1: the act or practice of engaging in promiscuous sexual relations especially for money
2: the state of being prostituted : debasement

But, yes in the feeling of the word. So, I think it walks a line and I would be uncomfortable if my daughter did it, but if they are all adults and it's legal, then it's not really any of my business.

For $13, I'm sure it's sufficient to wine and dine people into becoming friends, forging a deeper and more lasting relationship. Perhaps time is a factor in Japan, where one does not even have the time to socialize to make friends?

Isn't this a bit tamer than a lap dance?

Is a lap dance prostitution?

LOL, Japan...

I would gladly nap and cuddle with a dude for money. Except if they smell, I don't think I can get over body odor.

So, it would seem that it depends on what one defines as 'sexual relations'. ;-)

I feel a rousing round of "what is the definition of 'is' coming on. LOL

I admit, I did think of that as I was posting. But I think (hope?) it's a stretch for anyone to call a hug sexual relations. But yes, that is definietly where this kind of thing gets squicky!

$13 for 3 minutes of letting someone lay their head on me? Can I do this on weekends and evenings only? GIANT DIAMOND HERE I COME.

And of course this is not prostitution. Weird, yes. Prostitution, no.

most of us are prostitutes in a different way.we prostitute 8 + hrs of our life for $$$ on working days.

Prostitution? No.

Poignant? Yes.

Fodder for what could be a terrific screen play? Absolutely!

Weird. How sad that anyone would feel the need to pay someone to "cuddle".

OR . . . is this just another oddball social fad in Japan??

How about those kissing booths? Isn't this similar?

It is no more prostitution than being paid to give a head massage at the hair salon or a foot rub. It's money for physical contact, not sexual contact. It is very odd though!

FYI, I live in Japan, and I dont know anyone who's done this or seen this. It's not common. Also, I'm not sure why chrono would think there is not time to socialize here. I'm curious where this assumption came from?

Isn't Japan the country where the saying "death by overworking" was created from? I have friends in Japan who work crazily long hours.
