Do you buy things that aren't "you" or "your style"?

There seems to be a lot of things out there that I like and could even be considered "my style," but I don't like the way they look or feel (on me). Examples of this include: tennis bracelet, Cartier love bracelet, classic Chanel flap bag, colored gemstones, etc. It's totally a personal preference as I'm sure from a 3rd party perspective it's fine. Do you find this happen you as well?

Yes, this happens to me all the time. I buy things I am *sure* are perfect because I can immediately imagine myself wearing them... and then they sit.

Sometimes after enough time goes by, I relax into them. That is to say, I stop thinking about getting a coffee stain on a top, or a feeble scratch on the underside of a ring, and just wear them and enjoy them. They become mine over time.

Some never do. Most often the pieces that don't work out for me are the ones I somehow feel are 'too good' for daily use, or 'too good' for me in general. Those get rehomed.

Funny story: a dear friend who is clueless about all things related to aesthetics once complimented me on a new ring by saying "oh that's just your style" - I haven't worn it since. I knew the moment she said those words, that it's not for me!

Not really, but that’s because everything is my style :D

Facetiousness aside, I tend to only like things that go with my “aesthetic”, because I have two different “styles” - my western outfit style and my Indian outfit style. So everything I buy is “curated” to fit one or the other look.

Yes but generally every time I buy something I like but that’s not my “style” I end up rarely wearing it. I try not to make impulse purchases for that reason. I like so many things but am picky about what I end up wearing.

Sometimes. I don't tend to do small and dainty but I do have a few pieces (how did that get in there???? lol)

When it comes to jewelry the only thing I wear daily are my diamond earrings. Its a big part of the reason why I stopped making rings, and am currently sitting on 3 boxes of gemstones :oops2: they're not little boxes either.

I usually put a lot of thought into what I purchase (can you say over-analyze) so it rarely happens that I buy something
expensive and end up not liking it. For example, I think halos are really pretty and I admire all the beautiful ones on PS
but I feel like they're just not me. I have to say though if something is inexpensive, I'll give it a try and if it doesn't work
out I'll pass it on to a relative or goodwill. Its mainly the expensive things I want to get right!

Plus, I tend to be a minimalist type of person so I need to really like the few options I own of something!

I'd probably consider anything I liked and wanted to be my style so I'm not sure I understand the question. I've definitely bought things I ended up not liking or wearing as much as I thought I would, though.

I'm the same way. I've learned over time that although I like certain things, in the end, I won't wear them and so have refrained from buying them. That goes for clothing and shoes, as well as jewelry. It has saved me from making mistakes. Although I will say that my "style" or taste has changed over the years so I do have some jewelry that I have kept that isn't to my current taste, or I should say, I would probably have not purchased them today, or if custom, I would not have had them made. Eventually for the jewelry, I'll probably have the stones reset, but I have a mental issue with discarding expensive, custom, hand-forged settings.

Anything is my style as long as I like it!

Things I don't wear tend to be for practical reasons. For example metal necklaces make me itch so I avoid wearing them and won't buy anymore.

I’ve bought things ( jewelry and shoes mostly ) that I would consider my style but don’t fit my lifestyle ( casual and living in a very rural area ). :roll2:
So they come out to play when we go on vacation or Vegas.

Not with jewelry as much bc those are big purchases so I take them slowly but I’ve def done that with shoes… buying something that i try to convince myself I will like and use and it just sits around :/

I like changing things up too much to have a style that lasts for any period of time....and what I love runs the gamut.

I have NO style or design sense when it comes to anything -and- really admire it in others. And because of this, I am easily influenced by others when it comes to trying jewelry or clothes.

I like to push myself to try things outside of my comfort zone whether it be recommendations from friends, styles I admire on others and/or trying things outside of my comfort zone but look different/interesting. Obviously, if I truly don't like it or it doesn't work for me, I pass. But sometimes I like to give things a try because it is different than anything I own.

When I find I a style I love, I often binge on it and it can become my style of the moment. That is until I fall in love with something else. I end up with collections, whether it be clothes or jewelry, from my various phases (some never/seldom worn :wall:). It's a problem.

All the time. With clothes I’m a minimalist. Plain colors (no patterns), simple cuts. With bling I like them big and floral/halos. It took me a while to reconcile the two very contrasting styles but I now just wear whatever makes me happy. You do get used to it.

My style is sooooo simple, minimalist, and understated that anything beyond a MRB solitaire ring, diamond band, and/or MRB studs feels like "too much" and doesn't look/feel right on me. Maybe it's my phase of life, I used to like earrings a lot, but can no longer wear them due to allergies to most metals.

Random but related, even though I do have some DSS, whenever I've tried on larger carat rings they also don't feel right or look good on me...strange!

Hmmm not with jewellery but definitely with clothes, I’ll occasionally buy something I think/hope will look good on me and aim for a certain “style” only to find myself rarely reaching for it OR it’s not really practical enough for my usual wardrobe. Very annoying and I do try to be more honest with myself now!

That's my problem! I love dressing up but with COVID, work and having small kids I don't often wear the really blingy/fancy stuff even though it's totally my style!

Yes, I have in the past. Not clothes, but I have been influenced by jewelry before when I was younger.

Years ago, (ten plus) I used to think everyone needed the same "staples." A pair of round studs, a tennis bracelet with modern rounds or half bangle, a diamond solitaire pendant. I purchased those items, first in CZ when that was all my budget stretched to and then diamond. The only thing I ever really wore was the bangle, but not much. I have since sold all of those things and/or scrapped them. Those are not "me" even if they do fit the majority of the general population as far as jewelry wants/staples.

I used to be interested in handbagas. I was active on a handbag forum when I first started working and really felt like if all these women have these expensive bags, that is what you do when you are a "professional." Let's say I accumulated a lot of bags from mid-range designers. I did quite a few custom orders too, which I really don't regret, from a now defunct vendor called Belen Echandia, based out of London, handmade to your specifications in Italy, in quite classic styles for the most part.

I don't even carry a purse most days now. If I do, it's a crossbody. I do prefer leather over fabric, but now, I would not spend over $400 on a bag and I expect that bag to last me at least 2 years. I have carried the same crossbody bag, scuffs and all, including cat scratches, now for going on almost 3 years. When I have brand new things in my closet I have never worn still and things i have had for years that look new. The purse ladies would be horrified by me now. Especially because I like the brand Radley for leather crossbody bags. They have good pockets, are usually sturdy and I like the designs- and I pick them up on sale for usually under $125 now. They hated Radley on that forum!

I remember almost buying an LV many times when I used to go to Europe solo because the price was less because it was thought to be "iconic" and a staple bag-everyone needs a Neverfull and a Speedy in signature canvas. I am glad I didn't, because I think even then, I knew that what the preference of the crowd was, was not actually my preference.

Nope, and that applies to everything and not just jewellery, clothes and accessories.

DK :))

I have bought things that I THOUGHT were me. While I appreciate the style they just don't make it into my rotation and then I know I've made a mistake and need to sell. My jewelry taste leans more of a mix of modern and antique (antique stone bezel setting) any vintage or antique inspired piece ends up not worn, as much as I'd love to love it.

No, I don’t buy things frivolously. I tend to curate my jewelry and clothing so that they represent my aesthetic. Anything not my style was probably given as a gift, but sometimes I’m surprised by strangers’ compliments on things I wear that are NOT really “me” , but something I put on because of is a gift from my dh or dear friend.
