what information can I tell about a diamond from the serial number on the girdle. Is there a web site that will give me such information?

Ron,

You probably are looking at the diamond grading report number inscribed on the girdle.

You cannot tell much by the number itself. All you can do is just to compare inscribed number with its certificate number. See if grading report has a note under comments saying the diamond has inscribed girdle and what is inscribed.

Is it possible to have older diamonds etched with a serial number?

There are 3 pre WWII diamonds in the family, all in excess of 1 carat. Two of the stones are now in engagement rings and the third will be someday.

If they can be etched, how do we find someone to do this? One of the stones is currently in Michigan, one in North Carolina and one in Kentucky.
