I can''t sleep tonight so I am online looking at everyones diamond beauties :D

I am thinking about my ear surgery consultation appt tomorrow (Monday) and just dreaming about which studs to save up for. I feel like such a turd though
15.gif
15.gif
I look down at my ring at the two ~.73 pointer side stones and think, "Gosh.. 1.5 CTW seems small to me now"
15.gif
I mean, I know it''s not, and I''m sure they would look much bigger on the ears, but I just feel like I need bigger and bigger diamonds. I am even starting to feel like the 3ct stone is growing smaller on my hand every day too... (I sound like a TOTAL brat, I know
38.gif
)

One question is, HOW do you know what size is best for you? Budget wise? Carat size? a lil of both? The MINIMUM size studs I would want would be 1 carat, but might consider slightly smaller with the knowledge that they would eventually be moved to the back holes in my lobes to make room for bigger diamonds.

My problem with upgrading is I would constantly be thinking about it an probably not enjoy what i have, while I have it. I am such a turd

Someone help put some diamond perspective in my brain so I can stop thinking about how small my diamonds are getting... I am starting to feel like a total jerk (thankfully FI just laughs and tells me I can''t hang out with my friends who are enablers..)

And just a note, I really am NOT a spoiled brat or anything, but I sound like one
33.gif
, and I DO NOT like that. Someone slap me up.

(P.s. and my DSS has gotten so bad, I think/ daydream about how much weight I''d have to lose to have way smaller, skinny fingers so I could have bigger looking diamonds.. I mean, that''s pretty bad in my book... or maybe that''s just what I should focus my time on?

Maybe I''ll just bezel and halo everything to death... :D :D :D

PS breaks help

I haven't had anywhere near as much time for PS as I've had in the past, and I notice a difference in how I view my jewelry when I'm not exposed to SMTR and the like on a regular basis.

I'm not much help in general though, because I prefer more modest studs (under .75ctw or so). Have you tried some different sizes on?

SWedish - take a slight break from PS - I''ve spent wayyyyy toooo much time there
3.gif
so I know what you mean, but my problem is setting really
37.gif
anyhoot maybe take a detour to the other forums instead of the SMTR or start another ring anniversary project
27.gif

Put anything that you have DSS issues with away for a week. Somewhere safe you won''t be tempted to look. Wear somthing else, somthing small instead for the week, such as just a wedding band.
When you get your jewlery out of "storage" a week later it will look MASSIVE compared to what you''ve been wearing and you may realise during the week that you don''t need these massive stones to look nice.

musey I have tried on up to .50 ctw in my back ear holes that looked like a good size THERE, but that''s a good point.. maybe I should just try them on again. I did think they looked better in the ear.. or bigger I guess.

D&T I think I should do that. But I do love the SMTR thread (and by the way, I wanted to say thank you for updating the Engagement Rings photo library for everyone here.. :D). Oh, anyways, SMTR has so many gorgeous rings I usually need to pick my jaw up off the ground :D But, I have a pretty big moiniter and it makes everything HUGE.. maybe that''s my problem. Only use PS on my lil laptop screen :D

4ever I like that idea! The problem is trying not to wear them for that long. OK, I''m going to shoot for 2 days to start with *takes off rings* .. And it''s not that I think I massive stones to make others think it looks nice-- it''s just personal for me. It''s for ME to look at them and say, "Why, you look so pretty today diamonds!" lol

Swedish bean,

First, no you're not a spoiled brat or a jerk at all.

What you're experiencing, the DSS, is totally "normal"...well, at least as normal as things could get wrt to diamonds for PS'ers, LOL.

If you've been hanging around, you'll know that I'm def amongst those that have been having a pretty severe case of DSS; and alas, it doesn't look like it's letting up anytime soon!!

All I can tell you is that from this point onwards, if i were to buy any more diamond , I'd buy the biggest that we could possibly afford (with the specs that I want) and if that means saving up for years to get it, then so be it. Note though that this doesn't apply to "little" projects, like those under USD2k (my own personal limit).

If I were you, I'd save up to get the bigger earrings rather than buy smaller ones. DSS will set in before you even know it. So for example, my BGD studs looked HUUUGEEE when I first got them in April this year and already they look about half a carat smaller!!
7.gif

Budget-wise, only *you* could answer that Q. But again, I'd save and get the biggest studs (biggest in carat terms and ideal H&A cut, so they would always look big for their carat weight) I could afford if I were you, unless you have dainty little earlobes, in which case, you're a very very lucky girl indeed!

How did yr ear surgery go? Hope all went well.

Btw, I'd like to ask you something: since you said that your 3-stone ring is starting to look small, have you thought of halo'oing the centre stone? Do you think that'd help? I myself am undecided and I keep going back and forth between wanting to halo my 3ct and setting it into a 3-stone ring.

I''ve just found yr other thead about the ear surgery. I''m sorry, I didn''t mean for my comment to be sarcastic or "funny" or anything like that. It was just an honest (no hidden agenda) comment.

I''m glad you got a better quote for the surgery. Good luck with that and have fun shopping for the studs.

LOL! My DH''s aunt was talking about liposuction on her "turky arms" and it got me thinking....I wonder if you could lipo a finger to make a diamond look larger on it!
20.gif
Not that I would do it, just a random thought

I know, right? I am guessing I''d have to do the whole hand so it doesn''t look weird.. then maybe my arms... and hips.. and.. well nevermind. lol

I sometimes put my ring on my pinky so I can imagine having size 4 fingers :D

This is a serious problem, Swedish Bean. Don't underestimate it. Living in the future or in fantasy land while constantly feeling deprived & never being satisfied with the status quo or what's in front of you NOW, no matter how fabulous and luxurious it *already is*, is a state of mind that is worth fixing. It might take talk therapy & a giant dose of perspective & figuring out what you're NOT thinking about while your distracting yourself with visions of bling-to-come.

When it becomes a *problem* ... a fixation ... an unscratchable itch -- fix your thinking not your jewelry. Time & time again around here I've seen folks spiral into bling madness only to see months/years later that what they were really worried about was something else entirely.

Is that the kind of "help" you were looking for?

Phoenix

No worries, I promise!! I USED to have fairly small earlobes before the stretching. :) But, when you stretch, (if done properly) can kind of beef up the lobe. They are much thicker now than they used to be. As the plastic surgeon said, I have, "A lot of healthy, plump, tissue there." LOL After I get the surgery, if not enough skin was removed, it''s possible to go in and get another procedure to make them even smaller, which I hope I don''t need to do, but will do it if it looks bad.

Now that my time line is another 7 months out because of the surgery { then healing, then re-piercing, then healing again }.. , I think I WILL use that time to save. I mean, technically I could afford a smaller pair right now to go in my back piercings and just have them for when I am ready to wear them- but I figured I don''t want to get earrings just to turn around and want to upgrade it a few times in a year :D

I was able to try on some 40 pointers each yesterday, and I did love the size of them. I mean, ideally I''d love to have something in the 1.5+ctw, but that will take more time. I think I''m going to shoot for .75 ctw or higher for now as a 2009 goal, and have a bit of a higher goal in the next 2 years.

Part of me feels REALLY bad. I''m almost 26 and I feel like, some people never even get earrings and here I am wanting more more more and bigger bigger bigger.
40.gif
So I will try to keep myself in check, too.

About the 3 stone ring, My ring finger is a 7.25 (which is half the battle). The stone is a 3.18 with 2 ~73 pointers on the side-- While I think it definitely has a lot of diamond LOOK to it, I think it takes away from the center stone and makes it just look like a blob of diamonds sometimes. I always take a piece of string and wrap it around the center stone (so the string blocks out the side diamonds) and I think it looks larger w/o the side stones. I have been thinking and daydreaming about what a halo would look around it. I don''t think it''s something I''ll do within the next 3 years though, as I had it the shank completely re-done and the prongs redone to make it even wearable :) It really is more of a long term project for me I think (but never say never! hehe)

And Phoenix, what I wouldn''t give to play in your jewelry box! I love all of your threads- you are absolutely an inspiration for me... thank you for taking the time to write a reply to me :)

Ahh that is an very interesting point of view! I welcome it too!

Honestly, I have been wondering if I am addicted to spending. But I thought it wasn''t related. It might be.. I should look into that. I try to be very self aware- or as much as I can be.

I think what I meant with that quote was, if I got, say .50ctw studs I would like them, but not love them, and just be waiting and saving until I could afford my "self decided" diamond goal, I guess. Maybe that''s the problem to begin with, having a goal? I was kind of like that when I stretched my ears too- I knew I wanted to be at the minimum of 1" in each ear and every size in between didn''t matter-- I was just always waiting to "upgrade" the size...

hmmmm lots to chew on here... thank you...

Wait. Save. Savor the anticipation - and get your ideal size.

I believe you might benefit from some time away from PS. AND the internet. AND bridal magazines.

Back away. Stay away from the bling. Get some perspective.

It couldn''t hurt.

I agree with Deco 100%. Wise words.
