See that spec at the bottom of the trash bin??? It’s a .90ct diamond!!!
I suppose the fact I found the little sucker kind of negates the nightmare part..... but it took hours of checking every single parcel paper in the office to make sure I didn’t put it in the wrong place. I have ZERO ideas how it got there. But she’s safe and sound now!!

yikes!!!!! bet that was a few minutes of intense worry.
Actually .... I realized it was missing about 9pm Christmas Eve. I stayed till midnight searching with no luck. Then we went away skiing for a few days ( yes it was in the back of my mind but I didn’t mention it to Sandra. No need to worry her. Till we got home from the ski trip and I announced I had to go in to the office. The last place I checked was the garbage pail- weird how you always find something in the last place you look:)
Heres a close up so you can actually see the stone

Unfortunately yes- but thankfully, never a large stone......someone who worked here lost a 1/4ct pear shape about two years back. We did not fire the lady ( execution was a more sound choice) ....KIDDING!!!!
We didn't ask her to pay, she felt terrible.
One time we had a parcel of tiny intense pink diamonds.....you're talking well over $10k per carat, and the stones were minuscule.
We use a metal "scoop" to gather up the diamonds and put them in their parcel paper, or box.
Somehow the scoop got caught on my sleeve, sending about $20,000 of teenie weenie diamonds all over the desk, and floor.
It took over 4 ( incredibly stress filled) hours to locate them all- but locate them we did.......

I have visions of you all working in a sealed room painted one colour so things on the floor and elsewhere easily stand out - except you're all not wearing any clothes, just so you don't get anything stuck in folds of material... lol

I'm so glad it wasn't me!

I'm surprised that none of the thousands of PS members that have visited DBL ever mentioned the mandatory strip search before they were allowed to leave???

I lost a triple ex cut from GOG that was in an earring out on our front lawn, to this day I've never found it.....

Yikes! Lucky you found it! I once accidentally threw away two of my diamond rings. I hate to admit to that stupid move. Thankful for my insurance!

So glad you found the stone. I can totally understand the stress it caused. Back in my days at Neiman Marcus, we had a customer who ordered 3.00ctw in tiny pink melee and it cost him about $8000.00. When he came in to see them, the Consultant opened the parcel paper for him to take a look and he sneezed and blew them all over the place. We were finding pink melee for years. He just laughed it off as we still had plenty to make the custom piece for his wife. Being in the trade for nearly 30 years, I have seen diamonds disappear into pant cuffs, trash cans, ( I once had to dumpster dive for 2ct Ruby that my Manager mistakenly threw out, she didn't realize it was taped to the inside of the box lid) the crevasse of a chair seat, drawers, and even saw one flipped into a beard. Those baby’s will run ramped if you don't watch out.

Disclaimer, none of these events happened at WF. :appl:

I had the misfortune of having a 2ct red spinel (gorgeous stone btw) that had not even been in my possession for an hour, slip out of my hand and bounce on the deck until it fell right through the slats. I damn near lost.my.mind. I pulled up half the deck and never found it. (did find the skunk hideout though!) That was the last time I took a gemstone out on the deck like that.

:eek-2: Glad you found it!

I can't keep track of my diamond studs. I've even said it on here before that I'd finally found them--but they're gone again. Good reason to never get serious diamond earrings. They have not left the house IMO. My kids did find one of my rings at the side of the house once. I'll NEVER figure that one out. I didn't even know it was missing as I rarely ever wore it. Maybe a mouse stole it?

That is a nightmare!!! So glad you found it.

I love these stories! My bonehead thing was losing my first engagement ring, and emerald. I had put it on the bathroom counter and my husband and I were both getting ready for my friend's wedding. He started vigorously towling off after his shower and I said "watch out for my ring" he said "what ring?" And it was gone. The baseboards were gone at the time (the bathroom was under remodeling) and after the wedding we did an extensive search, looking with flashlights, even taking open the trap of the sink, but never found. The house will take it to it's grave.

HI:

Not sharing an event with my sapphire ring. Nope nope nope, nope, nope.

cheers--Sharon

I was cleaning a little yellow diamond ring that I got from DBL, and dropped it right down the drain. Luckily it was in the trap when my husband took the drain apart.

I didn't want to ask to closely.

This is soo scary have you ever really lost a diamond?

Like others in the trade, I have a story...

This was back circa 1980. I had hired Bei Van Tient, a Vietnamese craftsman who had escaped from Vietnam. He finally made it to Idaho because that is where his sister lived. She came to me and asked if I could help him find a job. I told her I was looking for someone to help me at my new store and gave him a job.

He was fantastic.

One day he was down on his hands and knees, moving things around and lifting them up. I asked what he was looking for. He told me he had dropped a five or ten point diamond back when a carat of them was less than $300 per carat. After an hour of him looking around I told him to forget it and go back to work.

Fifteen minutes later I hear an eek from my assistant in the office next to Bei's bench area. I went back to see what was going on. Bei had been standing on his chair with his pants down around his knees looking pawing through his skivvies to find the errant diamond. I asked him to please forget it and go back to work. The diamond was never found.

He wanted to pay me, I refused. I remember this story fondly as it demonstrated so clearly his honesty and integrity.

Wink

My sneezes always surprise me... @Vera W you'll give me nightmares of sneezing on melee :eek-2:

@Rockdiamond What is this 0.9ct stone? It looks like a yellow? :appl:

Aahhhhhhh- chooo!
Yes, that's a scary moment when yhou have the .000001ct diamonds out on the desk.

It was a .90ct H/SI2, with (clearly) excellent light performance:)

Seriously- the truth is, I have thanked the gods on many occasions for the fact that pretty much any well polished diamond catches the light in a unique manner. Even a little bit of light will get reflected back to the eye.
I'm sure I'm not the only one participating here that keeps a flashlight by the desk to shine on the floor to find errant rocks.

I had a chance to visit Alex Park a few months ago, and he said he has dropped diamonds without finding them. He figures they’ll turn up if he moved out of his current space, or not.

Wow, he is one calm and cool dude. That's all I can say. I wish I could be like this! Hope he finds his stash though. He has some gorgeous pieces.

ETA: @JPie please let me know next time you plan on visiting any bling dealer in the city if you are keen on company. I would love to go with you! Think of the damage we could do hehe.

@Rockdiamond so relieved for you that you found your diamond. How scary and whew!
