Anyone ever see someone abusing a diamond and think that they should have their sparkle license revoked?

Example- I have a friend with a lovely princess cut ring. She NEVER cleans it, and will put lotion on with her ring on, getting it all gunked up and gross looking. It seriously looks like a big hunk of greasy rock salt on her hand. I always harass her to clean it, but she just doesn''t care. I think to myself- "Why bother wearing a diamond if you are going to treat it like that? Why not just buy a cheap dollar store ring and be done with it?"

Anyone else ever see this kind of abuse?

My mother is like that. She''s got a beautiful antique setting with an OMC center stone and she NEVER cleans it. She never cleans any of her jewelry for that matter...

All the time. I don''t bother them about it but you can sure bet that if they come over to my house I offer to clean it for them in my u/s!

yep step -MIL poor gal can''t take her ring off, and one of her prongs needs to be looked at. she hasn''t taken her ring off for quite some time...

Yup... my Grandma has a vintage art deco setting the I LOVE but it''s filthy... I doubt it''s been cleaned in the last 20 years.

My mil gardens in her rings so they''re full of dirt. Drives me crazy.

It drives me nuts when I see Paula Deen cook with her rings on. She gets cookie dough, eggs, and other junk over them all the time. It makes me want to reach through the TV and smack her!

What people want to do to their diamonds is their own stupidity, but when they start abusing mine, I get oooooooogly! I can''t tell you how many times someone has gone, "Let me see your ring" then proceeded to plop their thumb right on top of my stone. This generally leads to me going, "This is not a crime scene! I don''t need yo'' prints, fool!"

I think I''ve posted this before: I keep a U/S in my office. And invite my staff for ''jewellery cleaning parties'' every month or so. They queue up in the hall outside my office and we have a blast.

I think most non-PSers (and even some PSers!) are like this

It's taken me about 6 months of 24/7 wedding band wearing to feel comfortable not taking it off to wash my hands. It's just not safe in public, but I couldn't bring myself to muck it up with creamy public bathroom soap!! It's okay. I just clean it more. Deep breaths.

I do this too & they''ll look at me like I have three eyes.

My MIL does not take care of her jewelry diamonds or otherwise. A while back I was checking her pieces out & could not believe how filthy some of her rings were. She told me some of her stuff hadn''t cleaned in 20+ years & I could tell. They were so gunked up with lotion, dirt etc. they had no shine-none & she wore some of them everyday. I took a whole bunch of her jewelry & cleaned it. Some of the stones were loose, the only thing that kept them in the setting was the gunk. They looked sooo beautiful after being cleaned

She took one look & said everything looked fake because of the sparkle

My mom sometimes take care of the garden wearing her rings

, you can imagine what happen with all the dirt, oh well

LOL, me too! It gets a bath in the cleaning solution every few weeks (or months), but that''s about it! Unless I go to a jeweler, as infrequent as that is, and they offer.

Yes...my friend never cleans her diamond. She will come over with the soap scum caked on. She always has the same reply..."I knew that you would clean it for me".

Ahahaha I TOTALLY agree with this! Why oh WHY do you need to put your grubby fingers on the freaking stone?

My ring stays clean, but my grandma never cleans hers unless I take it away and go to Zales or something. I only see her once or twice a year, too. Yuck!

Oh my GOSH I was at an apple store a few months ago and this tiny little woman walks in with a HUGE rock on her hand. My mom even pointed it out and I looked over..... it was CAKED with dust and dirt, and the diamond looked MURKY not even SPARKLY!!! What is the point of even wearing a diamond that doesn''t sparkle?? It must have been 5-6 carats.

Oh yes! I actually had a diamond sales woman who was being really rough with the stones she was showing me. One of the loose stones got stuck in the setting I was looking at and she did her best to pry it out with the little tweezers...poking at it, tapping it hard across the table, scrapping its pavilion. I know diamonds are touch cookies but this lady was taking it a little too far. I definitely decided not to buy from her. It was truly painful to watch.

I see it all the time. I even bought two girls at work a bottle of jewelry cleaner. One of them cleans her jewelry now, the other one doesn''t but when we chat at work she apologizes for her dirty rings now.

Just so you''ll know...

If you think tapping the ring on the counter, prying with tweezers, or "scraping" the girdle is a big deal you really don''t want to watch a diamond being set

It''s a brutal process and not for the faint of heart. People in the trade don''t baby diamonds.

I would love to see this in person. I can imagine it''s not an easy or delicate process!

I clank my bands (underside of solitaire and my eternity band) sometimes. But I do keep my diamonds clean (obsessively). My sister''s E-ring is filthy, so I am always on her about keeping it clean. She brags and brags about how sparkly it is too, but I see no sparkle under the muck!

I love my diamond when it''s clean...but, I sometimes forget to clean it for long periods of time. It''s not intentional...it''s just the way it is. I still wash my hands with soap, and apply lotion...and I''m sure sometimes it''s gross.

My great aunt was a smoker. All of her diamonds had a nicotine haze. I remember my aunt having to BOIL them to get them to a point where they could be cleaned using typical means. Ugh!

I helped my brother buy his FI her e-ring - and wonder why I didn''t just recommend he buy some chunk of frozen spit. She refuses to EVER take the ring off - even to put on hand lotion. (I sooooo can''t wait till she gets pregnant and finds it doesn''t fit anymore
27.gif
). It drives me crazy. I''ve had one go at her and all she said was that she didn''t plan to take it off ever and she would be buried in it too...

(My father made me take my wedding band off at the reception - I did and asked him why, and his reply was that he didn''t want to hear any nonsense about never taking a ring off ever again...AS IF!)

I now tend to give engaged friends a US as a gift so I don''t feel grrr everytime I see their stones.

This surprised me and made me giggle - you have so many pretties to shine up!

I have some friends who won''t clean their jewelry - i would like to clean them for them after i wear them for a while but they never let me. I clean miine all the time, but i don''t have an US system - just regular cleaning. If i had an US i think i would clean them every day!

Yep. Most daimonds I see IRL are completely crudded up. Even if you don''t care about the sparkle factor (in which case why bother wearing diamonds?), it''s just gross how much filth and muck they''re carrying around on their hands.

I''ll hide out with you...I always cringe when I see these posts come up because I get this visual of a hoard of PSers outside my door, waiting to pounce on me, grab my jewelry, and clean it within an inch of its life...
