Defriending Could Be Fatal; Facebook Violence.

I found this article horrifying, but not completely unexpected; people are nuts and the nuttier ones take things too seriously.
This is one of the MANY reasons I don't have a facebook.

Facebook "defriending" led to double murder, police say

NASHVILLE, Tenn (Reuters) - A Tennessee couple who "defriended" a woman on Facebook were murdered in their home by the jilted woman's father and another man, police said on Thursday.

He said Billy Clay Payne, Jr. and Billie Jean Hayworth were killed last month after they deleted Jenelle Potter, the daughter of one of the suspects, from their "friends" list. Both were shot in the head and the man had his throat cut.

The couple's 8-month-old baby was in the mother's arms, unharmed, when the bodies were found.

Marvin Enoch "Buddy" Potter Jr., 60, and Jamie Lynn Curd, 38, were each charged on Wednesday in Mountain City in northeastern Tennessee with two counts of first-degree murder. The men were arrested on Tuesday.

The case was not the first involving violence linked to Facebook:

Last year in Iowa, a woman was arrested on accusations of setting fire to a friend's garage after she was defriended on the social network site, local media reported.

In Texas, a man was accused of hitting his wife after she failed to "like" a Facebook post he wrote about the anniversary of his mother's death, according to media reports.

Wow, that's chilling.
And yes, I too am glad I don't do FB.

We all judge who is safe to associate with, but the Internet brings us in contact with everyone.
I really don't like how FB chose the term "friend" and especially how they made it a verb.
Instead of friend they should have called it "contact" or something.

In real life friend means something.
It does not mean that on FB.
IRL there are connotations to considering someone a friend, or ending a friendship, that do not carry over to FB.
IRL it's nuanced so every individual can custom design a zillion aspects of each friendship.
On FB it's black and white.

That's pretty disturbing really. It's just a website. I like FB b/c I am able to keep up with family and high school friends who aren't living near to me anymore and who I don't have the chance to call every day. I can also keep up with businesses I like. But for people to do something like that... I mean really...

This is one of the reasons I'm not on FB. It creeps me out and I've seen way too many friends and family (my mom in particular) become obsessed (like, in the literal sense) with it. There are so many things I don't *get* about FB. Mainly, my mother *friends* people she doesn't even like so she can know their business and she's often arguing or posting passive aggressive things. Oh, and nevermind that she tries to police what my siblings post.

Sometimes I wish I was a member because friends/family post videos of baby's first steps and words etc. and I miss it. But, other than that, all I seem to be missing is drama.

yep- same here. Guess I should think twice. In all honesty, I don't "friend" people easily. No need to have a bunch of "friends" that I am not really friends with IRL.

Stupid, stupid people who think that an internet site rejection should rock their world. This is what happens when people do not have a real life. I just saw a cartoon that portrayed a man in a casket at his funeral. There were about 3 mourners and the man's wife says "Strange that there are so few people, he had 2000 facebook friends".
