DC Comics character to come out as gay
By Joyce Eng,

DC Comics plans to reintroduce a character as gay, comic blog BleedingCool.com reports.

DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio announced the plans over the weekend at Kapow Comic Convention in London, saying that the existing superhero who was previously assumed to be straight will be "one of our most prominent gay characters." He did not specify in which issue the reveal will occur.

The news comes a year after DiDio told The Advocate that he only intends to introduce new characters in the DC universe as gay rather than make existing ones gay. Of the change in plans, DC Comics Senior VP Bob Wayne told BleedingCool.com that DiDio's view "has evolved," echoing President Barack Obama's recent endorsement of same-sex marriage.

The gay DC superhero won't be the first gay comic book character. In 2010, Archie Comics introduced gay student Kevin Keller, who later got married. Marvel Comics will reportedly feature the first gay superhero wedding between Northstar and his boyfriend in next month's issue of Astonishing X-Men.

It's nice.
The gay (and straight) children who read comics will find out that 'gays exist', and hey, maybe there's a place in the real world for them too.
A place for me was unthinkable a generation ago and something 'normal' people take for granted.

I was raised in the 50s and 60s.
It didn't even dawn on ME I was gay, and what that meant, till I was 23.
Growing up there was only silence on the topic or PSAs like Boys Beware that taught that homosexuality was a sickness of the mind and gays are all driving around stalking boys.

23 is kind of late to begin a sexual self-identity and dating.
It's sad, tragic even, and not too healthy.
Imagine never dating, no prom, nothing, zip . . . till age 23.

I'll bet the first black Barbie doll raised some eyebrows too.
Identity, inclusion, and self-acceptance are important things for children to learn.
This doesn't just benefit the gay children, straight kids also need to see some positive gay role models.
Maybe fewer gay kids will be bullied, and suicide.

I love this! It's about time to introduce more characters that children can identify with so they can see that being gay isn't a bad thing! :appl:

Pricescope needs a like button!!! :appl: Not to Kenny's all sad tale of a wasted youth but the comic book thing!

Right on.

Robin?

Hi,

I think that is a very clever move. My son (grown man) collects comics and he just mailed off two comics to my nieces children.
A girl, who is 5 months old , was sent a graded comic of "Supergirl". and a 2 yrs old boy a "Spiderman ", also graded. I want him now to go and find the first issue of that gay Superhero. It will be worth some money some day Kenny. Its such a fun genre. I enjoyed comics as a young person. My dad used always bring us comics when we were sick. Its a nice remembering;\.

I, too grew up in the 50s and I was afraid of you in my imagination because we didn't know anyone out of the closet back then. I feel so bad for a friend's children back in the 60s. The dad turned out to be gay, and the children disowned him. The world was different then, and I'm glad you found some happiness and the world changed, although kicking and screaming. I did some kicking and screaming myself, but I did that over a number of things back then.

I'm glad I'm no longer afraid.

Annette

Thanks. :wavey:

Excellent. :)

My money is on the Green Lantern.

This is wonderful!

My very first lesbian friend described understanding that she was gay at a young age in this way: "I loved Wonder Woman. My mom bought me a Wonder Woman costume and I would wear it all day long pretending to be her. Then one day, I realized I didn't want to *be* Wonder Woman, I wanted to kiss her!"

I think this is good to give heart to those young people that are ashamed and closeted.

But I think the whole issue of someone's sexuality is so irrelevant, honestly. I don't understand why some people choose to hate other people because of something so minor. I see no reason to judge people for their sexuality, as long as it doesn't hurt others (I'm talking criminal-type behavior, not consenting adults) and I honestly don't understand why others have such hate for people different than themselves.

I also don't get why some people hate others with different skin color. How is that different than hating someone's hair or eye color?

Or religion. Seriously, I don't care what your religion is.

If everyone would just mind their own business, we wouldn't have any issues, would we? Did you know that motto used to be minted on US coins? What ever happened to that concept?

I just don't get it, and I never have. . .

Fear and ignorance. That is really the root of hate, as I see it.

@Monarch64

What the heck are they afraid of?

Why would I fear someone that prefers different things in the bedroom than I do? Isn't that just silly? Why would I fear someone that has a different religion? As long as it doesn't involve cannibalism( :D ), what's the problem?

Walking alone down a dark alley at night, I would fear any stranger, regardless of color, nationality, etc., Why bother fearing in broad daylight, in a safe situation?
