My friend is from Eastern Europe. She told me that when she was growing up that is where everyone went for beach holidays. She tells me is beautiful and a great value. Her (born in the US) husband was more than a bit taken aback when she planned a trip for them to Croatia! Needless to say, he was raised having first really heard of Croatia during the fighting. Heck, I think I first learned of Croatia from watching ER! It has been my experience that most Americans have only recently been exposed to the concept of Croatia as an exotic vacation destination.
ETA: She did mention that the beaches are stone. If you are picturing white sandy stuff stretching into the distance, Croatia may not be for you.
oooh, FI took me there for a surprise long weekend in August! Originally I had misgivings as thought it was still war-ravaged but it was AMAZING!! We stayed in the most gorgeous hotel just outside of Dubrovnik called the Bellevue - really luxe with balcony overlooking private beach, a glass lift (elevator!) on the outside of the building and a gorgeous spa. Dubrovnik itself is beautiful. The main attraction is the castle overlooking the bay - you can walk around the walls and see the sheer drop down to the sea. You can tell where it was shelled during the last war but they''ve done a great job restoring most of it. There are some little bars actually set into the cliffs so you can drink to the sunset practically hanging over the sea and some brave people actually go diving off the rocks there. The weather was glorious, the people friendly and if you avoid touristy places (i.e. anywhere near the castle), food is good and reasonably priced. The only thing is, alcohol is very expensive and Croatian wine is, um, variable at best.
Friends of mine have been sailing just off Split - further up the coast from Dubrovnik and recommend it as there are quite a few little islands off the mainland.
I can post some pics later if you like - I''m at work now and don''t have my camera with me. I recommend the Time Out guidebook to Dubrovnik if you''re going there, it''s the most useful book we found
We got married in Croatia and honeymooned there as well. I vote Croatia over Hawaii any day. I guess it depends on how you want to spend your honeymoon. If you want to lie on the beach all day, then I''d concede Croatia may not be the ideal destination for you due to the rocky beaches.
I didn''t honeymoon in Croatia, but my DH is from Dubrovnik and we went there this summer on vacation. You can check out some pics which I posted in the TTC thread in Family & Home - start on page 140 (sorry, I hang out there the most so, I posted them there). Let me know if you have any questions, but Croatia is STUNNING, STUNNING, STUNNING - never been anywhere like it!!! You definitely will not be disappointed...
