Couples and diamond size

In another thread Madam Bijoux wrote, "I don't trust a married man who wears better jewelry than his wife."

That got me thinking.
What about same-gender couples?
Must they wear diamonds of the same size/value?

I'm asking because I know of a same-gender couple in which there was tension caused by one getting a larger diamond.
Then I thought of straight couples in which the woman almost always has a ring worth much more than the man's, even when the man has the higher income.

Not sure - all the same-sex life/married couples I know wear plain bands (plat/gold/yellow gold).

I know one man, co-worker/work friend who is a very stereotypical NY Italian wise-guy type (think Tony Soprano wannabe - except he's a million times nicer) who wears a very big pinky ring w/ a HUGE sapphire. His wife wears a small diamond e-ring and wedding band.

All of the same sex couples I know wear matching rings.

I think it depends on the individuals and how they interact as a couple. One of my best friends was talking about giving her GF the family stone, and her GF was going to use several smaller family stones to make a 5 or 7 stone ring. It suits their personalities - my friend is much more understated, accessories-wise, and a solitaire wouldn't fit her. Her GF, however, would look lovely with a solitaire.

Other couples I know have matching bands. There is a PSer that showed pictures of her ring and her wife's - they both wore a Tiff's band w/ diamonds for an engagement ring, and a WG band with milgrain for wbands. I forget her name, though...

My aunt got her partner a beautiful Tiffany & Co sapphire ring some years ago. My aunt hates rings, herself, so just her partner had a ring. Obviously there was no tension there, since it was a gift from my aunt! I''m not sure if her partner ever felt frustrated that my aunt was impossible to decorate. Possibly.

This made me laugh, LOL!!

I think it really depends on the couple, regardless of whether it''s a same gender situation or not.

The same sex couples I know opt for bands... plain or eternity/half eternity bands, usually. It doesn''t seem to be much of an issue, really.

I'm not sure if I even know any same-sex couples who've made things official. There's a few who date others of the same sex, but none have demonstrated any long-term commitment. Most date or have kept that part of their lives private.

v. interesting responses. I only know one same sex couple who have publicly committed to each other (my circle has just begun the engagement/marriage trend

). Both women wear diamond solitaires, I think they're both the same ct wt but one chose an emerald and the other a round, so the one looks a bit bigger. I do remember that it was important for their rings to be of equal value, but that was in part because they were already getting unwanted looks and comments, even from family

and they didn't want to give people reason to comment any more. That and they both do like their sparklies

Mine is worth a lot more than my husbands. I asked him of he wanted a diamond in his band and he said no. I don''t know any same sex couples. All of ''em are single and loving it. They do not want commitments.

I don''t care how long it would have taken me to save, if FI really really liked a more expensive ring, then that''s what he would''ve gotten. But he came across a style that he really loved, kept looking at it, and every time we mentioned rings he brought it up. So, for our anniversary I surprised him with it (no we''re not technically married yet, but we both wear our wedding bands everyday- it makes us happy.) He loves it and never takes it off- he gets really sad if I ask to look at it and hold it (I love how heavy it feels)- he always says "only if you give it right back!" lol. My ring is a considerable amount more, but like I said, I would have paid equal if not more on his if the ring would make him happy.

As for same sex couples, my aunt and her partner are in a very serious relationship and got matching rings that they designed together- the rings are very sweet and sentimental to the both of them.

My sister is a lesbian who is engaged.

When they got engaged, they did not have a lot of money, and her partner (who is very "girly" in the way she dresses) proposed. They bought matching antique eternity bands together.

Her partner is going to inherit a diamond from her wealthy grandmother (get this, it is a one ct diamond that was the clasp of a necklace, I want to see that necklace).

My sister is either going to wear a "mens" ring or a wedding band.

Who has the bigger stone is not really an issue. It is more about finding rings that fit their personality.

My friends both wear platinum bands, but one of them has a sizeable diamond set inside the band. I think it''s probably .75-1 ct but no one can see it unless he takes it off. His husband had it custom made and surprised him with it. It''s awesome-the top part of the band is taller to accommodate the diamond and since it''s platinum it''s super heavy.

i will wear a plain gold band when/if i get married.She will recieve a 1 carat diamond (princess cut)and she can have it set as she pleases.I will always wear my 2.5 brilliant on my right hand.If she has a larger diamond she is welcome to wear it in her set and wear the 1 carat on her right hand...its her jewelry to do with as she pleases!

Forgive me if I misunderstand, but are you saying that no matter who you decide to marry, she is getting a 1 ct princess cut diamond and nothing more, nothing less, and nothing different? What if she dislikes princess cut diamonds? Or wants one a little bigger? Or a little smaller?

I''d expect a different attitude on an engagement ring from a jewelerman.

I''m a bit surprised too Jewelerman. Assuming you fall in love with the woman of your dreams, I would have thought you would take your massive diamond and give it to her. I can''t imagine that she''d want/need anything bigger

and it would be a true show of love and devotion to take something that you''re so attached to and make it hers.

Oh, and ditto. You propose with a 1 ct princess to me and I''d have to rethink the relationship.

I''d expect you to know that I''m not a fan of a princes but would much prefer an OEC, Chunky Cushion, Octavia, etc. You may have a heck of a time finding a girl with all of the qualities on your wish list, and then adding that she has to love a 1 ct princess, just gonna make it harder.....
