Just asking for some prayers and good vibes for all my neighbors. My area was just devastated by multiple tornadoes, starting shortly after 9 pm and lasting until 12:30 in the morning. Rescue efforts are still early, but reports to local news are indicating severe damage. Some neighborhoods are gone. So far only 8 injured, but that number is expected to go up. Hoping with everything I've got that no one died. Some neighborhoods, they haven't even been able to reach yet. 60,000+ are out of power. They just sent out a bulletin asking that the entire city of Dayton only use water if it's crucially necessary, as the major water pumping stations are out of power. Entire neighborhoods are under mandatory evacuation. Gas leaks everywhere. Some fires. There is talk that the National Guard is being mobilized.

Everyone in my immediate neighborhood is fine. Two of the tornadoes - one of which caused some of the worst damage - were headed directly for us, but by some miracle ended up curving slightly in their paths so that they passed just south of us. My husband and I huddled under our basement stairs through tornado warning after tornado warning for an hour and a half, clinging to each other and our dear Gypsy (my avatar) as well as a carrier holding a plaintively meowing Slinky. We really thought we might not make it. I'm heartsick at all the people injured, frightened, homes and businesses destroyed, all the people flooding social media asking about neighborhoods because they can't reach their loved ones there.......they need all the prayers and positive thoughts you wonderful people can manage.

Thank you all.

(And just because sometimes you have to laugh so as not to cry, besides our beloved fur-children, my musical instruments, and our most important papers, I of course managed to find a little space under the basement stairs for....you guessed it......my ring box.)

I'm so so sorry for your situation and all the losses @OboeGal. Buckets of PS dust and we'll wishes across the pond!!!!!!!

@OboeGal I’m so happy you and your family are okay. My heart hurts for all the people affected by the tornadoes. It must have been so scary for you..I’m so sorry for the families that lost love ones. :cry2:

How scary @OboeGal! So glad you and your DH are ok. Sending dust that all people affected by the tornados come out of it ok. I know its a disaster
(dust) but hoping that lives were spared and injuries are minimal.

Sending dust to everyone affected by these awful storms. I’m so sorry OboeGal.

So glad you are ok! Praying for Dayton and all the families going through this.

Oh, @OboeGal... you have my heartfelt sympathy! Living in AL, it seems like we have large scale devastation almost every year. Prayers for you and your neighbors.

I'm glad you and your husband and furry family are ok. My thoughts are with the others who suffered this devastation.

Glad you are ok and hoping others are likewise!

Side note: Do you mind if I ask if this is a common occurrence in your area? We see media a bit here about "Tornado Alley" in the USA but I've always wondered where they mean exactly and how frequently this happens? How do you get home insurance in those areas?

That sounds terrifying! I’m so glad you are all ok.

I'm so sorry, @OboeGal - what a terrible situation!

I'm glad you made it through ok, and will pray for the safety of all those who went through the same experience.

Sending lots and lots of hugs. How scary for you. Let’s pray there are no deaths and the damage can be quickly fixed.
And of course a dedicated Price Scoper makes room for the ring box!

Thank you so much, everyone! Your concern, well-wishes, prayers, thoughts, and dust are deeply appreciated.

Apparently, the National Weather Service has confirmed three tornadoes that were at minimum EF3, a fourth EF2, and a fifth EF0. All took place within a time span of around two hours, and all but the worst one took place within an area of about a 30 mile radius. (The very worst one was in Celina, about 60-70 miles north of Dayton). Much of the areas hit are highly populated with homes and businesses. Two of them crossed Interstate 75, and they had to use snow plows to make the interstate passable afterward. There are 40+ injuries, a few of whom are in intensive care, and one poor elderly man lost his life in Celina. Tens of thousands are still without power, and it was near 90 today; the main water pumps in Dayton have no power, and it's unknown when they will, so much of Montgomery County has no water at all, and what water they have is unsafe, so a boil advisory is in place. There are neighborhoods that have had mandatory evacuations due to damage and gas leaks. Many have been forced into shelters, and many businesses have been destroyed. All that said, however...... considering the number of tornadoes, the number of areas hit, the time of day - late in the evening in the dark - and the population density, we're an incredibly lucky community. It could have been so, so much worse. I fully expected the injury and casualty numbers to rise through the day, and they haven't. That's a blessing.

@GliderPoss, that's a great and, in my opinion, very relevant question. Until recent years, it was a fairly uncommon occurrence in Ohio. Ohio has never been considered part of Tornado Alley; that has always been more states in the Great Plains and some of the Deep South, such as where @msop04 is in Alabama. We would occasionally have a tornado warning that commonly did not materialize into an actual tornado on the ground, or have a weaker EF0-EF1 do some damage to some barns somewhere in the state, but not think too much of it, and then very occasionally have a single event more severe. The most striking example was when I was a child in 1974, the community of Xenia about 20 or so miles east and slightly south of Dayton was utterly devastated by an F5 that was part of an outbreak of them all over other states in the Midwest, Plains, and South. More than 30 people were killed and there was millions of dollars of damage. To this day, it will often appear on the list of the top 10-15 worst tornadoes ever in America. But in Ohio, all these events put together were rare - until the last 5 years or so. Due to - I believe - climate change, we have easily had more tornado occurrences with damage of some significance in Ohio, and particularly our portion of Ohio, in the last five years than in the previous entire portion of my 54 years. Around that same time, we've noticed other consistent changes to our weather patterns: delayed onset to fall every year, far grayer winters that oscillate much more wildly all winter long between VERY warm temps and deeply cold "polar vortices", and springs lacking sun and full of endless rain and flooding, making it hard for farmers to get their crops planted. Things, they are a' changin'.

You must have been terribly frightened Oboe Gal. I too live in the Midwest and the one thing that always strikes me are the people who do everything they can to help others in these situations. It always seems as quickly as people get their bearings, even amongst the all damage, they always get out to help others who are less fortune and offer help and support. It always restores my faith in humanity. We are all so much better when we are helping others. Have you heard of any sites that are set up to directly help the people in your area? I checked the Red Cross to see if they had a a drop down where money donated will go directly to your area and didn’t find one. I will check again tomorrow. I’m so sorry honey and I hope it helps to know you have a people who want to help the people in your area.
Hugs, Callie

These wild storms are also a reminder that any of our lives could change in a moment.

@OboeGal

Wow, that is so scary. I am very sorry for the loss of life and property in your state, but am glad that your family and instruments (oboe, english horn, oboe d'amore) are okay.
We have a grab-and-go bag ready for earthquakes and wildfires in CA. Last year we had a close call and like you, I had my jewelry and my primary 14k flute by the front door. I would leave my two backup flutes, my piccolo, and my alto flute behind.

I hope the weather improves for all of you soon. Sending positive thoughts your way.
