That's unbelievable! I'm in Canada. We'd be homeless and on the streets right now if we had that system since my husband had an incident several years ago. He was bleeding to death internally and ended up in ICU for a week. He required surgery and a high level of care and wasn't even expected to live. There's just no way we could have ever paid a bill for that! It's just not right that the average person in the US can face bankruptcy at any point over hospital costs. Retired people can lose everything. Our system is not perfect, but at least it's not discriminating to that degree.Date: 1/19/2008 11:50:22 AM

It does remind me of the time I was in the ER for an asthma attack before my asthma was somewhat under controll and was at the time making payments towards a balance from the last time.
Accounting lady comes in and said they wanted 10% of the estimated bill before I left which was around $500 right in the middle of the third breathing treatment in 40 min. while waiting for the cat scan too check for another PE.
I riped it up and tossed it at her and told her that I guess im going too be here a long time if they are going too wait for it.
Then the doc came in and threw her out which was kinda kewl LOL
Medical bills ARE high up on the list of why Americans file for Bankruptcy (both my c/s cost $15K EACH and insurance only covered 80% of the 30K. We had to make payments for years!).Date: 1/19/2008 12:27:32 PM

Then tax payers can file complaints and get federal/state funding cut off.Date: 1/20/2008 11:12:51 PM

Ok guys I thought I would stay out of this thread but I need to say my piece..what you are talking about is MY JOB!!
Do I like going into patients rooms and asking them for their $5,000 deductible or their 20% of their medicare? No, however, this is the growing trend. We are a non-profit hospital. So we RELY on people to pay their bills.
When a patient comes into the hospital and they owe the hospital over $20,000 from unpaid bills we have to talk to them per hospital policy. I know every patient that gets admitted to the hospital, what their coverage is and how much they owe.
I hate to tell you this, but people that go to the hospital will now be REQUIRED to submit some sort of payment or make payment arrangement with their clinic or hospitals. I know this sucks, and yes I totally agree with what you are all saying but hospitals are a business as well as a place for healing. If a patient says bill me, we bill them simple as that. If they ask for a payment plan, we make a payment plan, however, if you are coming in to the hospital for OB/delivery and you owe $500 bucks, you have had 9 months for saving for your bill.
HOWEVER, I also see patients who do not have insurance or owe a large ded. and I help them with Charity Assistance and I help them with secondary ins, medicaid, or figuring out another alternative.
BE NICE TO THESE PEOPLE...trust me....we get yelled at enough!!! Who would be there to take care of your sick grandma in the hospital with a 20% copay from a $30,000 bill?
No I am not taking this personally, just asking for some compassion..this will be the norm soon enough!
Which is a for profit hospital that goes out of the way too make it hard on the working poor and was built with taxpayer funds but then bought out by a for profit company for next too nothing a few year back.
