Color Sensitivity and Brain Training

When I first found PS, there was a thread of people discussing their color sensitivity scores from a little online test. At the time, I got a middling score. I figured it would save me money because I couldn’t spot subtle differences in diamond color.

Recently, I’ve noticed that I seem to be able to spot more of those subtle differences in diamond colors both IRL and in photos. Just for fun, I did the test again. This time, I got a perfect score.

Clearly, I have been spending way too much time looking at diamonds and have inadvertently trained my brain in the process. LoL.

If anyone else is curious, the test is available at:

What matters more than what colors you can see is what you like/prefer/tolerate.
For example some of my favorite diamonds I have drooled over in person had a noticeable color, some fancy, and some with just a hint and some icy and a lot in between.
My likes run to a wide range of tints and saturations.

@Karl_K —totally agree. I love my M color OMC. My K color MRB is interesting. One of the things I like about diamonds with a bit of tint is that they seem to have more variety in how they look-depending on the lighting. I can also appreciate the icy white of a D colored diamond.

That was an interesting experiment - I got 4 but I’m still not sure what that means LOL.

I got a 2. Had a little trouble with blue/greens. I don't know if this image will show in color...

And it didn't.

@Demon and @Kyton — with a little more time, you’ll probably score zero.

A few years ago, my score was 20 something. This last time, it was zero. Fortunately, my tolerance for color hasn’t changed. I’m with @Karl_K on that topic.

Hubby and I each got a 2. And we are color sensitive!

This was fun! I got a zero. I can spot icy white but I much prefer vanilla cream.

Interesting quiz! I got a 0, not surprised though my first career was graphic design. I definitely see tint, but I appreciate it in many cases depending on the stone.

@nala, @Diamondbug and @FL_runner —I’m impressed with the low scores. I would guess, though, that PSers as a group are a little more color sensitive than average.

And despite my score of 0, I have some doubt that I’d be able to tell the difference between D, E and F color diamonds with any accuracy.

I want to add that I took the test quickly but could have prob scored a zero if I went back to double check. I mention this bc I thought the test was super easy so idk how reliable it could be? I can see myself getting super frustrated with the longer version of the test and just quitting lol

Fun test! I scored a zero. Years ago, I wasn't color sensitive at all, but that seems to have changed.

I scored a zero. I think it’s easier to do it with colors than it would be to actually rate the tint on a handful of diamonds....at least for me.

I don’t think I could distinguish the D/E/F but I haven’t had the chance to see them “side by side” in person before. I do start to pick up on warmth once we get to a G and definitely with H, esp if I compare it against my engagement ring which is an E.

Zero.

Fortunately I also prefer warmer diamonds!

I have never seen a D ( I don't think) but did own an E and F so had plenty of time to just stare at them. I could tell a difference if I stared at it long enough till I was crossed eye . But at a glanced, not so much.

Cool test. I flew through it and scored a zero. I'm not overly surprised though. I'm pretty color sensitive in general. I can typically see the differences between colors (whether we're talking about diamonds, paint colors or anything else) fairly easily. That said, I appreciate most diamonds as long as they're cut well!

0! :) Not bad for a dude, considering (according to the test) that it's much more likely for males to have color differentiation issues!

This is a cool test -- also, reassuring to know I have some decent color determining skills for gemstones and pearls, lol

I scored a 4 btw but I had to concentrate on it.
I can tell color differences fairly well if I look for it but its not something that I consciously do all the time.
So I consider myself not color sensitive.
What I do have comes from photography.
But it still has little to do with what hue and saturation diamonds I like.

I just took it and got a zero. I am pretty color tolerant though due to budget limitations !
On a serious note, I prefer a little color to icy white. I have a D, F, G, H and a few Is. I prefer my H and Is! 2E617076-7F90-46DD-A440-91F86ACB0F22.png

I had seen a test on here before, but it was time consuming. I liked this one, and was pretty
shocked that I got a 2. I don't consider myself color sensitive at all.
