Wedding Choosing how to address invitations - a poll

Would you rather receive an invitation that's...

A) Hand-addressed in semi-nice (not AMAZING) handwriting
B) Addressed with Professional Calligraphy
C) Printed in a pretty (not plain/standard) font


I didn't make it an actual poll because I think it would be hard to just give one answer

I'm trying to decide which to do... calligraphy is likely not in our budget, but if people generally think it's THAT much better, I'd spring for it. I'm a pushover.

Calligraphy, of course!

But if it breaks your budget, hon, I wouldn''t do it. We were only able to do it because my mom is a calligrapher. (I wish I could rent her out to you!) There are a lot of people in our area who say they do calligraphy, but it''s really just pretty handwriting with a calligraphy pen. Anyway, they tend to charge less than real calligraphers, maybe you can find someone like that?

My second choice would be handwritten, and then my third is printed. I just feel like printed addresses bring down the level of formality of an invite SO very much.

A good friend had her cousin address their invites for them because she has immaculate handwriting, do you know anyone with great handwriting? That would be a nice wedding gift for someone to give you.

B. Absolutely. Because we get sooo much junk mail and bills nowadays and I think a wedding announcement or invite is a happy thing to receive and calligraphy makes the envelope say "Hey! I'm not a bill or junk mail! I'm something special, open me!"

personally, i never notice the handwriting on the envelope because all we usually get is bills and crap, so if it''s not one of those two, i tear into it pretty quickly and enthusiastically.

if you''re wanting to save some money and have major free time, you could cheat and print them with some kind of pretty calligraphy font, then trace it with a pen so it''d look like it was hand written.

I would actually think that would be harder to do. What if you mess up while tracing?

hey, i could mess up while tracing; i guarantee i''d mess up if just writing them, hahaha! my father refuses to allow me to write with red ink because he says it looks like a serial killer left a message in blood, and it just freaks him out--not a good wedding look...unless your them is "Silence of the Lambs"!

I was recently referred to this woman who does calligraphy out of Michigan and she has the best handwriting for the most reasonable fee that I've found so far. I asked her to send me a sample and it was sooo pretty! (I'll try to take a picture when I get home).

If you book her this year (or at least tell her this year you'd like her to do your invitations, even if they're not being sent till next year as in my case) she'll even do your place cards for free!

From the beginning I've wanted calligraphy for the invitations and when I got the sample in the mail it just solidified my decision. I think I've only ever received 1 or 2 hand addressed wedding invitation (rest used labels), and I think handwritten (even if not calligraphy) definitely beats a sticker.

I say print it. I don''t feel anyomre special recieving something that was hand written than type if it is more attractive that way.

I really think caligraphy is a waste of money. Most of the people I know wouldn''t notice and I know some people (FI''s family, cough, cough) would think it was pretentious. My FI can do caligraphy, so I am just making him do it, but that is mostly because it is cheaper than paying a printer.

Thank you for your input, everyone! It looks like I should lean toward hand-addressing them...

I personally really love calligraphy. Anytime I get something in the mail that isn''t a magazine or a bill, that''s in a different envelope and has writing on it-I''m all about it. But when I get something that''s got my name in calligraphy, I pour over those letters and think, "Wow, my name has never looked so cool before."

Having said that, I will probably ask my mom''s friend to hand-write them because she has AMAZING handwriting that just with a plain old pen looks like calligraphy or some crazy cool font. She''s an artist, so that may have something to do with it.

Do you know anyone who has really cool handwriting?
