We have two collector cars we got sweet deals on. #1. Join and actively participate in forums about that type of car. You'll get a heads up on pending sales. #2 Attend area car meets and put the word out. Sometime people need extra money and are only willing to sell to someone who will appreciate it. #3 use search tempest to search Craigslist in other states. This is where the car forums come in - you want establish a reputation as a legit person so that you can find a mechanic to check out the car in another city(usually $50 or so - sometimes they insist on doing it for free). Once they've vouched for a car, you can put a deposit contingent on inspection. Or, like we did, take a chance since the price was so damn low! with car #1, we drove 600 miles to see it and set up an appt with a mechanic to do a compression test on the engine. Well, it turns out his dad was the mechanic at the local dealer when the car was purchased (by a little old lady...classic story!) and ended up fixing some stuff for free cuz he was bored. We sent him a really nice food basket to thank him! you make wonderful connections through cars and car forums - it's actually how I met DH!!
