Hi everyone, I'm interested in a car, the Carfax report says one owner to present, the seller says he bought the car 3 months ago.

Is this a deal breaker or could Carfax not be up to date?

If he has the title in his name with no liens (they are issued by county here), would that be enough to overcome the above?

Thanks.

If he's selling it after 3 months perhaps there's serious problem with the car.

No, he's leaving the island. People do this all the time. That doesn't alarm me.

I'm concerned about why Carfax isn't up to date? Some people here (I know this is hard to believe) sell cars with no paperwork, I just want make sure he has clear title.

Kwim?

Well, either he has the pink slip or not.

If he says he does but does not present it upon sale, walk away.

Ok. Thanks Kenny!

If he only bought it 3 months ago, the Carfax may not yet be up to date. As long as he can sign over the title to you at the DMV or wherever, it should be fine.

Is carfax the only way to trace car history in the US? Does the DMV allow private searches if you have the VIN#'s?

What type of a car is it? Did you do research on Consumers reports for that vehicle type?

Hope it works out smoothly for you and it has no bad skeletons in its past! I think it could very well be Carfax not being up to date, but I'm no car expert!

(ps - hows your Dad? and the no smoking, and the wild and crazy landlord sexcapades! ---- haven't had an update!!! I'm thinking of you!!! )

Hopefully Carfax can tell you, by VIN, if that car was in any accidents and how serious they were.

I'd also want to see receipts for maintenance and oil changes.

Kenny, no accidents listed.

Enerchi, I don't want want to jinx it! I will say I don't know of another way to check a vehicle's history. The DMV doesn't do that as far as I'm aware.

My dad, well, he's "a hurting unit" according to my mother, and he won't do what they tell him. I guess that would be breathing exercises, not smoking, but I didn't ask.

So he's miserable, but he'll live.

My dumb bleep landlord moved his girlfriend in! She's been living here for two weeks. She came one weekend and never went home.

They are more discreet now that their love isn't so new ( ) but he told me I can't have overnight guests, but he can, and they. never. leave.

I hate his guts. In all this time I've been without a car, he's given me a ride maybe three, maybe four times. Fine, whatever. He owes me nothing. The first two (or three) times he would not accept gas money, but the last time I offered a lot, because I know gas isn't the only expense of a car. He gave me a few rides. I paid him. I don't have a problem with him on this score. However, he let it slip on one of these rides that he sees SO walking three miles from the bus stop to his house and. passed. him. by. every. single. time. That's pretty cold. He's going to, um, the same house. He's never given SO a ride. He did offer him a ride once when they met at the grocery store, but he came up to him again and told him they were in the girlfriend's car and he couldn't do it. He said he'd take him and his groceries, then told him he wouldn't, and let SO walk to the bus stop, take the bus, and then walk three miles with groceries. After he offered, SO certainly did not ask him, a ride. SO. hates. his. guts. worse than I do. Sigh.

I'm glad they aren't making sex noises. It was disgusting! :errrr:

I am 100% smoke free. Thanks for asking! :))

WOO HOO!!! 100% - thats AWESOME!!! :appl: :appl: :appl: So proud of you!!!

Ugh - your landlord sounds like an a$$h*le :nono: What a jerk - what goes around, comes around - so something will happen to him. Its just the way the universe works, but that is totally a nasty thing to do - drive right by your SO and not help. I just don't get rudeness...

...AND... glad the "bloom is off the rose", so to speak, in terms of the passion! He sounds like quite the selfish man -its all about him, what he wants and never mind considering others. :angryfire:

Your poor mom! She must be going nuts - trying to get your dad to follow directions   That's so hard for people caring for those ill or in pain, to know what they NEED to do, but see them not follow thru. Hopefully at least he's still on pain killers and it is easing his discomfort. It's just going to be time that will make him better...

Thanks for the update!!!

Oh, you're so welcome! Thank you. :wavey:

Nothing useful to add that hasn't already been said. Good luck with the car, Danny. Also, very happy for you that you're still smoke-free!! Congrats!!

A quick note about Carfax......

The only accidents that will appear are those that have been claimed through insurance.

Do yourself a favor; make the sale contingent on getting the car thoroughly inspected by a mechanic of your choice prior to committing to the purchase. It will be among the smartest money you ever spend.

A good mechanic will check for mismatched glass, signs of flood/water damage, signs of non-matching part numbers, etc. and will make sure all the operational elements of the car function properly.

ditto, most people including ebay motors now recommend having an AutoCheck report. Carfax= EGL

Thank you! I'm glad too. I don't want to start again because like I've said before I got hooked for a year after only two packs after quitting for three years. It was when SO and I had to live apart from each other for seven months do to the fact he had to move to take a job but still. I just ended up hurting myself and quitting was hard. Like very hard. So it's much better if I stay away from them completely!

Thank you. And may I say it's an honor to meet the legendary "chainsaw".

Deal's still in the works. We'll see. I'll tell you what, people, if you live three miles from a bus stop, you do not want to be without a car for two month as I have been. Miserable.

I don't want to jinx it but made the deal today. Supposed to happen tomorrow. Wish me luck. I'm very comfortable with the whole thing. Obviously though it's not over till it's over! :cheeky:
