Today was the day that Caifornia was to decide whether or not to overturn its ban on gay marriage. As expected, with the support of Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, it did. The only surprise was that the ban will not be overturned until August 18. California joins six other states in which homosexual marriages are already recognized: Iowa, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and the District of Columbia.

a good thing, imo. to say anything further could be construed as political which is forbidden here but i am happy that now my gay friends can have equal access under the law to the same benefits and privileges that i as a heterosexual married woman enjoy. :appl:

I feel two ways.

1.) This is not surprising.

2.) What has taken so long?

Ok, 3 ways.

3.) YAY!

Good news. I wish other countries and states will follow.
Everyone should have equal rights to marry who they want.

The stay on same sex marriages has been re-instated by a three-judge panel.
Here is an excerpt from the article:

"SAN FRANCISCO — A federal appeals court has extended a stay on same-sex marriages in California until it decides whether a ban on such unions is constitutional.

It is just the latest turn in a protracted legal battle over Proposition 8, the voter-approved ban.

The ruling, issued by a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, came less than a week after a federal district judge, Vaughn R. Walker, lifted a stay he had imposed to allow proponents of the ban to argue why same-sex marriages should not proceed. On Aug. 4, Judge Walker ruled that Proposition 8 was unconstitutional.

Even when lifting his stay on Thursday, Judge Walker allowed six days for the Ninth Circuit to review his ruling. That left many gay and lesbian couples and their supporters hopeful that same-sex marriages would resume Wednesday at 5 p.m., when Judge Walker’s stay would have expired.

That will not happen. Now, such weddings will not resume until, at least, the appeals court decides the case. And perhaps not until it is decided by the United States Supreme Court, where it seems to be headed. "

disappointing. equal rights under the law is what i was taught to believe in no matter the issue.

Just a slight point of fact, California didn't overturn the ban (its Supreme Court upheld it actually). The Ninth District federal court in California overturned it.

If I understand this correctly, the federal judge's decision (although stayed by the appeals court) overturning Prop 8 is the law, unless the appeals court overturns the decision (or unless the Supreme Court does). One of the possibilities right now is that the appeals court will throw out the case after opening arguments are filed (because the plaintiffs may not have standing, the plaintiffs being the group who defended it in the first federal case, the California governor and attorney general, who were defendants in the first federal case, having refused to be parties to the appeal).
