We've agreed on a price and I initially agreed to pay by wire. I even checked out the bag and clicked on the "pay by wire" option.

But after having thought about it, I realised this would be a stupid thing for me to do since I don't know anyting about Luxury Mart. I emailed them and the owner/ director (not sure what he is) said that they don't accept PP payments for any item over $4k. I then offered to pay the PP fees (which I know is very generous of me) but he still wouldn't agree for me to pay by PP. I have no idea why he's so resistant to it? I mean, what is the risk to him/ them? I asked him this and he simply said that it was industry-wide practice not to accept PP for any large purchase.

What shall I do? I know I really shouldn't proceed if he insisted on my paying by wire. But I feel like a jerk for backing out of what is essentially an agreement/ a contract. It's not even the fear of being sued, it's just not how I usually operate.

What do you think?

Could you not pay by CC? I know Malleries certainly allows sellers to accept CC payments...

Unfortunately, CC's in Singapore (where I live) offer no protection whatsoever, unlike CC's in the US.

;( What a dilemma. I would feel uncomfortable paying by wire unless I trusted a vendor implicitly, and a Kelly is a big purchase! Their merchandise seems authentic by and large (I've been watching a few Chanel Reissues) but honestly, I haven't made up my mind to try them yet.

don't do it :!: ..if you aren't comfortable wiring the money to him b/c once you wire the money there ain't no way to get your money back if this guy turn out to be a crook, so i'd rather be a jerk then lose the $4K.

i've been on both side (buyer/seller) of these wire transactions but before i wired any money to the seller i'd speak with them over the phone and ask them a lot of Qs while trying to get a feeling about the type of person that i am dealing with. i've done a few watch deals w/o any problems, but always trust your "gut feelings" before wiring your $$$.

go to a handbag forum and do a reference check on Luxury Mart.

Yes, please use the resources on the purse forum. Google this; authenticate this Hermes. It will lead you to the section of the forum where the ladies will look at the listing pics and tell you if the bag is real or not. Even if you are pretty sure it's real, have it checked out, it only takes a few hours. Have the vendor put a 24 hour hold while you're authenticating.

Then go ahead and post your question on the purse forum too. The ladies there have experience with the different vendors on Malleries and ebay, etc.

I've never heard of any issues with paying over $4K with paypal, I am wondering about that. Industry-wide? I don't think so.

Malleries vendors are NOT all good, it's just like ebay with all different vendors.

And there are so many genuine Hermes for resale out there, if you miss this one you'll find others. That two year wait thing is apparently a big myth or maybe it only applies to custom bags.

Better to feel like a jerk than a sucker.

I wouldn't do it, it so sounds like a scam. Maybe not, but I wouldn't be willing to take the chance. There is a reason he won't take paypal.
Ilander said it perfectly.

Thank you, everyone, for your input. You've confirmed what I was feeling in my gut. Funny thing is, the guy from Luxury Mart cancelled the order himself. So I'm no longer bound!! :loopy: I am wondering what he really was up to....but anyway, I have a feeling that I prob dodged a bullet!!

yeah, that's really fishy where you agreed to pay for the extra fee and he still wouldn't do it. I'm glad you are no longer buying from them

I have only used Paypal a few times when I've made purchases on eBay so I'm not completely familiar with their policies, but could it have anything to do with Paypal's Buyer Protection program? On a handbag forum I visit, I've read about some horrible experiences some sellers have had with Paypal siding with shady buyers. Maybe the vendor is a little gun-shy about using PP for larger transactions due to some bad experiences? Whatever the reason, I certainly understand your caution.
