It seems mean to taunt a bull and then kill it and yet others would say bullfighting is a cultural tradition.

What say you?

It is 100% wrong and immoral in my opinion.

Yes it is wrong, there are many, many cultural traditions that are immoral and/or cruel. Foxhunting, the running of the bulls, the egyptians burying slaves with the dead so that they would have servants in the afterlife, footbinding, Sati. We humans are capable of some pretty odd things.

It is inhumane...
When cultural tradition supersedes humanity we have a problem.

Ditto. I've been to Spain twice and was appalled at how many tourists go to bullfights. Why would you want to see an animal tortured to death?

I think it is both but it is a cultural tradition that needs to come to an end.

This. Culture overhauls itself all the time as standards and values change.

People cheering on while an animal is tortured to death? Yeah it's wrong. Same with Cock fighting.

Yes, it is cruel, unethical and horribly wrong. Gandhi's wise words always come to mind when I see people treating animals horribly for whatever reason/rationalization/excuse...“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”.

What do you think Danny?

I think it should be outlawed along with other forms of animal abuse.

it's disgusting and inhumane. i really don't understand.

It's cruel and should be outlawed. In Africa, female circumcision is a cultural practice which has been banned in most countries. Barbaric treatment of both humans and animals should not be tolerated simply because it is practiced under the guise of cultural freedom.

It's horrible and it needs to stop. I don't know how anyone would watch while the poor bull is being tortured to death.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Just like dog-fighting, bear-baiting, cockfights. Humans like to distinguish themselves from "lower" animals because we have brains & the ability for empathy (in fact, so do other species) -- no cultural tradition excuses not using those qualities. I've always hoped there's a special hell for people who participate.

Ooooh, Interesting question.

I work with a lot of Spanish people (mainly from Madrid) and they seem to be split almost 50/50 about whether Bullfighting is right or wrong. We've had some quite interesting conversations about it.

The other one that comes up is the "Running of the Bulls". Again some intersting conversations.

What are your thoughts on the running of the bulls? is that in the same category as the bullfighting or different?

Same category to me. Only dumber still. You've got frightened bulls rendered more terrified by a bunch of drunks & idiots shouting & harrassing them in narrow city streets, where they've never been before. I always think people who are injured only got what they asked for.

I'm with you.

Of interest, bullfighting is not a cultural tradition in all of Spain. Barcelona and the whole province of Catalonia do not practice bullfighting and pride themselves in not being "bull-killers". As you are driving from Madrid to Barcelona, you see huge flat images of bulls made of metal standing along the road. And in Catalonia, you'd see none.

There is a cultural difference between Catalonia and the rest of Spain, Catalonia even has its own language (which was forbidden in Franco's time), but it is comforting to know that not all Spain considers bullfighting cultural norm. In cafes of Madrid, you see tons of photos of famous toreros, and dramatic episodes of bullfights. In cafes of Barcelona, you see photographs of FC "Barcelona". Personally, I think Messi is much more attractive than all these toreros. :D

I feel more for the poor horses that are gored as a by-the-way of the bullfight process than for the bull, and more for the bull than for the bull fighter if he got gored.

I think it should stop.
