Breed Specific Legislation.

I'd love to hear the other side from someone who supports it, because despite my efforts, I have yet to find a single individual actually in favor of it. I know people who support stringent owner requirements (training, secured yards, signage, etc), but not anyone who actually wants to see the extinction of an entire breed.

After the Lennox saga played out, to a sad ending, I was hoping that BSL had gotten enough worldwide press and airtime that regular people would be up in arms. Real change would occur. But it seems people have already forgotten. Until it is THEIR dog taken away, it's not enough to spur them to mobilize. But pit bulls today...what tomorrow? Rottweilers, German Shepards, Bull Terriers, Dobermans? I hope it doesn't have to go that far before people stand up to the government and say, "This is unacceptable! You can NOT seize and murder my non-violent family member because of false breed stereotypes!"

The newest potential victim that I've heard about: Dre. Obviously a much loved family pet, seized in Colorado. Watch :50. Gorgeous.

If you think it's NOT okay for this little girl's dog to be murdered, sign the petition: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/366/...ull-in-brighton-co-who-has-never-hurt-anyone/ Share it on Facebook. Write to your legislators. Contact your newspaper. Talk to your friends about it. Do what needs to be done to overturn unjust laws.

Personally, I'm fed up with these stories and will do what I can to contribute to the anti-BSL legislation. The thought of having one of my pets ripped away from me and murdered makes me sick. :knockout:

Not me. I think it's asinine. The Deed Not The Breed doesn't seem to hold much weight. I've got a couple rescues on my FB page and it just breaks my heart b/c every-single-DAY there are notices about dogs being taken or being put down immediately after surrender, rather than seeing if they can find a home for them. Most of the notices about abused dogs from those two rescues are about pitbulls. Sick what people do to animals.

Those who are for this garbage are usually non-dog owners who give in to inchoate fear. They are uninformed about dogs and dog behavior, about how essential love, training, discipline, & decent treatment are to dogs -- and that those things are as important to raising a dog as to a child. To be fair, many of the anti-breed folks will listen & understand when education is provided, but someone has to make the effort to do so.

Horrible that this is even a possibility. So many people are ignorant and inhumane. How can this go through- it's horrific. ;(
Laurie is 100% correct. It comes down to the owner training the dog. The breeds themselves are not dangerous- it's how they are trained. Don't get me started on these sports "stars" who think it is cool to train them as killers. They are the real animals- the people who treat the dogs as vicious machines. :nono:

It is inevitable that things like this begin to happen though because so many are complacent about "euthanizing" healthy animals. How far away is killing breeds that many people fear for no good reason?

This quote pertains to WWII but I think it can apply to any situation like this- just because they are dogs doesn't mean they aren't worthy enough to have a quality of life- let alone being murdered for NO GOOD REASON besides ignorant fear.

“In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I
wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because
I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up
because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't
speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no
one was left to speak up.”

Good quote, Missy.

A couple years ago in the big City about an hour away, they were trying to pass something about pitbulls. If you had one, you had to get it out of town or they'd come take it from you, even if there'd never been a problem w/the dog, even if it was a brand new puppy. The basis for this was of course just the breed in general b/c it's "vicious" and some people who liked to squawk about things they had no knowledge of, started their squawking. The interesting part was that the leader of the pack was a councilman who had a golden retriever. Every quote in the paper from this guy was fawning over the breed and how wonderful they are and they would never ever ever be dogs that would "act like a pit bull". And one day, the dog, the blessed and saintly golden retriever, was out on the front porch w/the daughter and a friend, and a guy happened to be walking, on the sidewalk, ACROSS THE STREET. Just walking. The dog jumped up, took off down the porch, across the yard, across the street, to that opposite sidewalk, by then the guy was a few houses down the block, and attacked that man. Beautiful day outside, so plenty of witnesses to what happened. They tried to get the girls to say he was in the yard and even up on the porch w/them, that the dog was protecting them, but they said no, that's not how it happened. And the owner of the dog, the guy leading the charge against the evils of pitbulls refused to believe that's how it happened and accused everyone of lying and messing w/his daughter so she didn't "really" know what happened. His dog was seized, and there were billboards put up all over "Free Rex, wrongfully accused!" And they went ahead and scheduled the dog to be put down and amazingly enough, the dog disappeared the night before it was scheduled to be done, and the owner was in the paper "stunned that someone would take the law into their own hands but heartened by the knowing that the dog would be safe from being unjustly euthanized for an act that didn't warrant it"

It's pathetic, really, the lengths people will go to.

What's really sad is that all of these animals are suffering due to the things that have been done to them by humans.

I recently saw a pitbull type dog who was unneutered tied up to a pole using a choke chain and left outside for hours. I called animal control but I'm not sure if they did anything. That "owner" is the problem, and there's two parts to this.

One, which is that if your dog is *strong* enough to cause serious injury to a human, then you have the added onus of ensuring it is trained well enough that it does not behave unpredictably. I don't think this is a breed thing, I think it's a size and muscle thing! I personally would not be comfortable with a dog I could not control, because it's not fair to either of us.

Second is that there are certain breeds that *can* be linked to unpredictable behavior I believe, and if you have one, you need to be really familiar with your dog. I think this is sad that humans have bred dogs for these traits and it's not the fault of the dogs, but we have to take some responsibility for their plight. My mother was attacked by a doberman that had been trained as a type of security dog but did not like women for some reason. Personally, if a dog has a prejudice towards a group of people, I don't really think it should be used as a weapon or trained on how to behave in a deadly way. Taking potentially unpredictable animals out of situations where they may be a danger would go a long way to less attacks and less dogs being put down, and improving the perception of the breeds.

Long story short...people need to be more responsible, period!

petition signed.

for the record i do believe the breed has issues.....but i think those issues are provoked and/or trained for by their owners. the few i've been around and was told they were pussy cats actually displayed some things i wasn't comfortable with. however, it was a no child household and the dogs really were kept either indoors or in an adjacent kennel.

i also believe in "no crime, no punishment".

therefore, petition signed.

i have also read that european breeders have bred for different characteristics with breeds that have had "issues" here in the US.
i believe that breeders have been to blame here and that perhaps with awareness the market here is changing and that this particular breed is now reaping the benefits of what the europeans have learned.

BSL makes me sick. I didn't have to have a Pit Bull in my family to know that BSL is BS. But now that I do have a Pittie of my own, the fact that BSL even exists is just inane.

People are monsters, not Pit Bulls.
