I NEVER get poison ivy. I mean, I haven''t had it since I was a kid. I haven''t been outside around it or anything recently or been where I could''ve come into contact, but I have about a 2x4 inch patch on my forearm right now and it''s uber-annoying! I finally got some gel stuff to put on it tonight, but it''s in a place that''s rubbing on my hip as I type on my laptop. Grrr. I think my doggie must have gotten into some and then it got transferred to my arm or something. Ok, just wanted to vent. Anyone have any great home remedies, or do I just have to wait until it dries up and disappears?

Oh Monarch ... I have the trick for you. You have to run water as hot as you can get it & put that part of your arm under the tap. Hold it for as long as you can stand it ... at first it will itch like h*ll -- but then a wave of orgasmic bliss will crash over your arm. Sweet sweet relief. The itch goes away for about 6 hours! Then you'll have to do it again. I think it also dries up the stuff quicker this way too - but I can't swear to that. Just the Arm-gasm part. I kinda miss it.

WAIT just re-read the instructions & they say you should ramp up the temp slowly
Ramping up the temperature is a must for the treatment to work, being cautious not to scald yourself with sudden and wild changes there. The relief, and dare I say, pleasure derived from concentrating very hot water directly on the areas infected approaches a euphoric level once you find the right temperature.

ETA: I think the heat from the water overloads the nerve endings in your arm & puts it on *tilt* so it can't continue to feel that "itch" sensation. That's my guess -- I don't know exactly HOW it works, just that it DOES.

Here is one link about the HOT water treatments. Top of page is cold ... scroll down.

I really liked the orgasmic bliss part of your treatment suggestion...then we moved on to hot scalding water and I thought "this gal is a sadist." Kidding. I don''t have super sensitive skin, so I will try the hot water treatments after I read the links you so kindly posted. I have some dishes to do tonight, so it won''t be a complete waste of time, water, and gas (my water is heated by gas apparently)...however, I can''t access my hot water heater in this apartment and someone''s got it turned to a rather lukewarm level so that the very hot water only lasts a few minutes...we''ll see if I''m able to achieve arm-gasmic bliss. Thank you!

OK, I washed some dishes but before I started washing, I let my arm have it with the hot hot hot water. It seems to have helped! I wouldn''t say that I achieved an orgasmic state of bliss from the hot water, but it does feel better, hee hee. The super hot water must act as a drying agent and that''s what provides some relief from the itching sensation? I was reading all the ingredients on the topical gels and creams at CVS tonight and most of them contained cooling agents such as menthol, etc. I''m popping two benadryl before I go to bed tonight in hopes that it will also alleviate some of the itching. Thanks again, Deco!

Lucky! Most people are allergic to it, so if you''ve never had it you are LUCKY!! Growing up on a farm and playing in the woods, I had it a lot as a kid, but as an adult...I''m floored. It sucks!

Monnie-check the thread from Whitby's husband's PI problems a few months ago. Lots of great ideas there, too many and too long to repost. I'm super bummed to hear about this. PI SUCKS!!!

Oooh! I will read the thread, maybe there will be some remedy in there that my skin responds to better than hot water and cortizone gel...my PI hasn''t spread farther but the rash is bubblier and way worse than it was last week. The itching isn''t driving me crazy anymore, it just looks really bad now because it''s so red and raised up.
