Wrong answer Rockdoc, these people need our help to buy and sell their diamonds because they need to kick start their economy and they have not got much else going for them.
They do not need us to pay a premium for "clean" diamonds.
Diamonds are now one of their main exports from sierra Leonie. And they raise taxes on the exports.
I was commenting that the movies scenes were sad to watch.
As to other sources, I watched your interview with Martin Rap, and while on the surface his intentions sound interesting, and possibly an improvement, it appears that the plan that he is instituting includes a premium too.
I guess I''d prefer to see just how much improvement is actually attained before jumping in and saying the program is great. I question why anyone needs to add a "premium". At the retail end of things, prices are pretty competitive. I suppose if "everyone" is adding a premium to the price, through SOC, KP or some other program, I guess it will become a fact of life in diamond pricing, but I wonder just who will benefit by consumers paying these premiums. Many governments get tons of taxes, and it really isn''t always spent helping those who need it most.
Maybe I misunderstand the various programs out there....just think it has to play out to see what really happens.
In today''s Idex there is an article that the Kalahari Bushmen have placed an ad in Variety seeking Leonardo Di Caprio''s help with regaining what they call "their land" from the Botswana government.
The Botswana government which is apparently hooked in with De Beers, have denied this.
Seems the "big guys" and governments always seem to have some influence in any natural resouces, maybe rightfully so, but maybe not depending on how it is done.
