My facebook days are coming to an end - we found out we won''t have access to it in china... and I kinda always wanted to do something with more writing and pictures and less twitter-like quality. I am considering smugmug for photos... but I''m not closed on that deal yet... but for blogs I''m not sure. I''ve had one since like 2004 that I haven''t used much at all over the years and I''m not sure I''m committed to it (it''s on blogger) and was wondering if any of you have any ideas for picture hosting sites or blog/journal sites. I have literally thousands upon thousands of pictures from all over europe on our travels there and I am certain moving to china will generate thousands more and I''d like to get this stuff documented before it''s lost to memory. I have always liked the idea of scrapbooking but I have NEVER been attracted to the paper and glue and cutting things... my idea of a scrapbook is having photos printed and bound into a book that I can order multiple copies of and send as gifts. I am not a crafty person. I am a geek lol

So I''d love to hear not only what you use or have used or what someone you know uses, but why you like them or don''t like them... might be good for all of the rest of us too :)

PS: I don''t want you guys to limit what you post based on this, but me personally I''d like to have something I can attach passwords to so I can freely post pictures of my kids and stories about them for family and friends without those areas being open to the public at large.

Tumblr is pretty great for everything you seem to be looking for.
It has a blog like feel, but is often used for pictures and videos as well.
It also has the option to have things private, or viewable to friends only, or to everyone.

I was very...confused when I first stumbled upon it, but I think you may like it!
I''m over facebook as well, I just cleaned up my list to have a few friends, and family only. I didn''t like the feel of "gossip" it made me feel ("so and so said her facebook said this...etc) ugh! Granted, you won''t have a choice, it is probably still a blessing in disguise! I had no idea facebook was not available in China!

I started one and didn''t get far before I was overwhelmed with confusion lol I haven''t given up - but I''d love to get more suggestions... this is a good one though, I''ve never heard of it! I wonder if there is a website of a list of sites inaccessible there...

My sis lives in china and still uses facebook. I think she said she uses a ''proxy''? I don''t know what that is, but maybe you could look it up.

Good luck!

I also have family in China, and there is a way to access Facebook with some hack!

Thanks guys... I think I am going to go with smugmug for my photos - it really has everything I want... it has a cost associated with it but it''s got so much to offer. I guess I''ll stick with my blogger... does anyone know how to make the strip for main content wider? My monitor is a 24" flat screen and when I look at my blogger page it''s like the middle 1/3 is content flanked by two huge empty spaces lol I know they do that so people on low res 14" screens can see it but I really don''t care much about optimization lol

why china?Work, family or vacation?

my husband is an engineer for a major semi-conductor company that is building a plant there and we said oh what the heck, let''s have an adventure! Startups in foreign countries are fun, right?

Good stuff!

I use Blogspot for my blog, and it''s easy to add photos either as an album (I think - I haven''t tried that feature) or in the text (I do this, super simple, and you can size them however you want).

It''s very foolproof/easy to use, works with gmail (which is great, since many of my friends use gmail accounts), and people can "follow" your blog, etc.

Okay so I have decided that Tumblr isn''t for me - however I have also decided that it''s great fun to just look at art and interesting pictures... Awesome!!

I am 99% sure I''m going with smugmug for my pictures - they have great anonymity... and I am hoping it will be easy for me to incorporate photos I upload there into blogger.

has anyone tried any of the other ones?
