And MOH gift opinions.

First the BestMAN (there's only one, typo in heading). John's only nephew K, but more like a younger brother as 9 years separate them. They are like peas in a pod too, since John had a large hand in his raising. Quick story, first time I met K was at his parent's house and he was 17. I was on the trampoline they had in their backyard and John, who watches me El Clutso, like a hawk whenever I'm doing something potentially stupid has to go inside for a second... after a minute I notice that K is watching me just like John does... same body language and everything. At one point I do something unsafe and he's like "please be careful"... and stands even closer. I ask John later if before he left he said something to K about watching me, and he says no. Later when I asked K about it he just shrugged and said Uncle J was watching you so closely, I figured there had to be a reason, so when he left I just wanted to make sure nothing happened. Two freaking peas in a pod. Another K story, I call him about the tuxes for the wedding and we start talking about the invites and he compliments them and says, "they're very you guys, is orange the wedding color?" and I say, "yes but don't worry we're not putting you in an orange tie or vest"... and he says, "Oh I know Unlce J would never let that happen." And the stinker is right, I wanted to stick him in orange but John said no.

My POINT IS. They are close. But K lives in Nashville now, and John here in CA and this has been really hard on them. In a lot of ways they are best friends. So if POSSIBLE I'd like the gift to be something that acknowledges or enhances that closeness. We REALLY wanted to get him Devils @ Predators tickets for the game on Jan 19th, 2009 but they don't go on sale till Sept 18th, and we won't have them in hand in time mostly likely.

Here's some information about him to help with the gift search:

K's a chef. Johnston and Wales grad. Has nice knife set and kitchen stuff. Also doesn't get a lot of weekends off and has a wacky schedule, so he can't go up North to Jersey all that often.
Lives with his cousin, they don't really need anything by way of home/kitchen/stuff.
Loves the Philadephia Phillies and the NY Giants and the NJ Devils. Owns lots of jerseys' and memorabila.
Has an awesome Ipod.
Has a crap car (but we can't replace that for him...lol).
They both love Risk (looked into collectors edition but John said they wouldn't be able to play it often enough)
They play online games
They do fantasy football.
They really REALLY miss watching the football draft together. Always a big event for the two of them.

K's super thoughtful, isn't in a serious relationship (so we can't really get him like gift cards to a nice restaurant), and he's got a pocket watch. And so... we're stuck.

Under 250 would be fine. John thought about just getting him open airfare out here from Nashville, but I don't know if that's possible to purchase, and John thinks that might be a selfish (on his part) gift.

Okay... also about my gift to my MOH. I'm paying for her hair and makeup. I was going to get her these cool martini glasses that are handmade and everything... but now I'm wondering if I should get her something more personalized? She's a vegetarian, very green, all about animal rescue, but practical about most of that. Teaches Pre-Columbian Art

at a University. Loves Central and South America and the local indian cultures down there. Very into native crafts. Adores Cobalt blue and lapis and her birthstone is diamond. Since the hair and makeup are gonna cost a bit of money, something around 75-100 would be ideal.

I say something personal that will be used for a long time...sterling engravable key chain...sterling cuff links...nice wrist watch...sterling engravable ring...get the future mother in law a string of lapis beads or sterling bangle bracelet with date of your wedding engraved inside.something she can wear to the wedding.

Hi Jewelerman,

Thank you for the response! We were looking at a watch but we called the cousin who lives with him, and he just got himself a nice watch a couple of months ago. We''ve been looking at other engravable items too. So far the front runner for his present is a beer of the month club. He''s a big fan of beer.

Thank you for the jewelry suggestions for my Maid of Honor (MOH) as well. I don''t really know where to look for some lapis jewelry... she and I have different tastes in jewelry... she''s very artistic and likes things with flair. But I will keep looking!

Hope all is well with you and that your job hunt shows quick result.

Hmmmmmm. Is K a gadget kind of guy? Do he and John like or hate photos of themselves? Depending on those answers, maybe a nice digital photo frame loaded up with photos of them before you give it to him? If you get a good sized amount of memory for it (they often take SD cards or usb drives) they can hold hundreds upon hundreds of photos (of anything, mind you. Not just John + K).

I know you''d prefer to have the game tix in hand beforehand, but if that really is your best/fav idea... could you present him with an IOU of sorts? A photo of his favorite player or game, a printout confirmation of the ticket purchase, a map of the stadium with the seats highlighted, etc, and a card letting him know the awesome news? I guess the risk there is being positive you can GET the tix when they go on sale. I''m guessing you can, even if it means stalking the gazillion resale sites online. Stupid scalpers.

As for MOH...I''m stumped.

I just got married and got my best man a nice watch... Alllof the grromsmend got engraved cufflinks... I think the nice watch is a good best man gift... especially if he doen't have one... Its much more personal than tickets somehere and he can wear it on the wedding day... That was our though behind all the bridesmaid / groomsmen gifts... we wanted people to be able to waer them for the wedding, but still want to wear them in the future after that... Since he already has a watch, though, I think any of the other suggestions are good too... just make sure you have someting to give him that day... If yopu do the beer of the month club, print out a certificate or something to give him...

Gypsy, I saw in the setp/oct shoutout thread that you bought your best man gift. What did you end up deciding on?

Just wanted to recommend Overstock.com and their "Worldstock" section for a gift for your MOH...Here is the link to their lapis jewelry:

http://www.overstock.com/Worldstock/World-Jewelry/Lapis,/gemstone,/22/dept.html

From the Worldstock website:

"We emphasize sustainability: choosing items that are environmentally sound, and that don’t burn up the natural or human resources of their producers. Our goal in Worldstock is not to make money, but to create tens of thousands (and someday millions) of jobs in the poorest regions of the world, while bringing customers unique products of which they can be proud – hand-crafted clothing, jewelry, ceramics, furniture, and much more."

Sounds like something that would be meaningful to your MOH and they do have pieces from South / Central American artists.

I just called him with 3 options: Beer subscription, game tickets, and cuff links. He chose the cuff links, apparently he likes to wear them, and only has one pair. So I bought a pair of Scott Kay''s from Pearlmans. Our wedding bands are Scott Kay as well, so it''s nice.

My MOH got upset when I gave her a list of things to consider. She feels I am already spending too much on her hair and makeup, and now that she is going to Nordstroms for makeup, she will get a ton of makeup to take home (I booked her with someone who is not line specific, one of their assistant managers), and she feels that''s enough.

So, that''s resolved. Thank you Allimay and everyone for your help!!

I am doing harley davidson pocketknifes made by Benchmade. They are soooo fun, and you can never have too many pocket knifes right??

http://www.h-dknives.com/products/Default.aspx

Funny I just saw this thread... I was cleaning out my condo this weekend and found 3 best men gifts I''ve never used-- an engraved baseball bat, an engraved flask, and yes, and engraved pocket knife....

haha

lol Sna77.....My FI has been in 2 weedings. His gifts? An engraved flask from one wedding and an engraved set (pocketknife, compass, flashlight) from the other wedding. None of it has been touched since either wedding. It''s been over 2 years.
It''s because of this that we are having such a hard time with the groomsman gifts for our wedding!

this is why I did engraved cufflinks from Tiffany''s for the guys... They had to wear tuxes for the wedding, and I ordered them w/o cufflinks, so they got to wear them for the wedding day... Plus all guys love cuff links...

Other ideas that other friends did... One friend got us all tickets to a Red Sox game, another did a U2 concert... If everyone lives close by and can agree on a date, concerts are great options... Oh, another took us for a day of cart racing... Not sure if there is anything like this around you, but check out www.f1boston.com That was a fantastic experience...

Hi Iwanna those are cool.

John has an engraved flask, a watch (that he actually used), and a couple of other things (can''t remember what) that I think are in storage.

Sna... Tiffany Cufflinks! It never occured to me to look there and I just did and I saw like 5 pairs I loved. Ahh well, I''m sure the Scott Kays are lovely and they are the same designer as our bands, and I do like the continuity of that. I''ll just have to block out the Tiffany ones. But man, I''m getting a pair for John from Tiffany.

The tiffany cufflinks that are sterling ,oval in shape with blue enamel borders are killer!
