i am the wrong guy to ask about lady's watches.

Gypsy, if it's a quartz watch, it will tell time just fine. You're paying for the brand, materials and looks at that point. So "good" is kind of irrelevant.

TG..convince her to buy a mechanical.. :wink2:

Over $3,000 for a stainless steel case and quartz mechanism??? Yikes!

I'd be looking for a fine vintage watch with that budget - but Gypsy already knows that! :wink2:

Jennifer I would sell you my rug in a heartbeat. I want it to go to a good home.

why can't you fall in love with a mechanical watch? ;))

Gypsy, 2K for a watch designer I've never heard of? Ay, no. I had to look the designer up and saw they were on yelp. One review on their watches and not positive.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/georg-jensen-new-york-3

If you have to have quartz and would spend 3K, I would spend it on a secondhard cartier or something. That will at least hold value.

Go check timezone's sales corner and type in "Ladies" if you are interested. For instance, there is a cartier panter 2 tone that is $1000. Or a Rolex 2 tone datejust for $2300.

And if I were to pick something? JLC Reverso Duetto, $4300, comes with bracelet, steel strap and deployant buckle. AND all the papers. AND diamonds. It looks mint, and it if looked good on my wrist, I'd probably sell my own watch to get it (it was my dream watch for ages, but I have to say, it looks crap on my tiny wrist.)

and btw, that JLC above watch is TIMELESS. If you want a watch that jewelry lovers AND watch snobs seem to hold in high esteem, get that JLC.

OH LAWDIE -- FANTASTIC!!!! Dream watch for sure!!!!! Is that rose gold, though? Grrrrr. Can't tell. If it's yellow, I'd have to pass LOL. (As if it's even an option for me right now!)

Agree that Cartier would also be a good 2nd hand choice.

I didn't mean to give you a hard time, Gypsy - of course you should get a watch that makes your heart sing, even if it is quartz. And you're right, your choices are more limited if you go mechanical wind or mechanical automatic, especially when you rule out leather bands, sports styling, cocktail size ( which I wouldn't, but I'm not you! :wink2:) and overtly vintage styling.

But- there are still some options. Bedat offers watches similar to the one you're looking at in mechanical; there's the le coultre reverso TG mentioned, and cartier pasha styles to name a few.... I haven't seen anything as high fashion as the jensen, though.

Deco, it's steel, and someone buy it and put me out of my misery (that's if it is actually still available).

Even though it looks CRAP on my wrist (because it's mechanical and is a thick case), I searched high and low for it just hoping. I rarely ever saw it second hand, and rarely this model with the bracelet. Also, it's not automatic, it needs winding, and I really wanted an automatic.

But still....

Kill me. ;(

Seriously, I looked high and low for that watch secondhand for MONTHS. I can't believe my first hit on timezone since last year and it's sitting there. That watch has always just EXUDED class to me.

The rest of me is getting fat...why isn't my wrist??!? ;( ;( ;(

Don'tkillme, I don't like the JLC. I like JLC as a brand and would love a watch by them, but I don't care for that particular style. The Lady Reverso is more appealing to me but I still don't really care for it.

MIss Pasha by Cartier is okay. Does that come in manual? But really the only Cartier I like is the Tank Americaine and that's way out of budget, even used.

And why do I want manual anyway? I've never understood what that's considered better.

I really care about the appearance about the watch. For me it's a piece of jewelry. I know that's not what watch lovers look at, but I'm not a watch lover. I just want one nice 'forever' watch.

Gypsy, if it's just a piece of jewelry to you, then yes, by all means, buy what aesthetically appeals to you and enjoy wearing it! The reason I don't care of quartz is because at the heart of it, there's not much value. Unlike jewelry, watches in the category you are looking at are steel...not really precious by any stretch of the imagination. You're paying for design and brand.

The reason why a mechanical watch is considered "better" is the work that goes into making one! But even then, a lot of automatic watches out there are powered by a "stock standard" ETA movement. Quartz though, to a watch lover, has no "soul." It''s a battery and a computer chip. There's no art to telling time.

That being said, I think a lot of the reason why some of these watches (like the JLC) come up on timezone from time to time is women hate wearing them! Men who are watch snobs by their women mechanical watches, but a woman usually just wants a good looking watch that tells time without her having to set it. Just pick up and go. Even TGuy, who I bought a Zenith for, hates setting the watch. I just bought a watch winder to make life easier for him.

I love mine, and don't mind resetting it. But as I get older, and technology gets crazier, I just like to put my ear to my watch and hear the whirring and ticking. That's just me. Mechanical watches can also be handed down from generation to generation. A quartz has about 30 years of life, tops, from what I understand.

Resell value, unless it's high end designer, also is terrible for quartz. But like jewelry, I wouldn't be buying a watch hoping it holds value.

Longines is very mid tier to me. Chopard would have better resell value.

I know the *watch* is steel ... but on the reverse side there's some color of gold "trim" surrounding the face and on the hands ... can't tell if it's rose gold (LOVE) or yellow gold (LOATHE).

So beeeutiful! I'm kinda in a masculine watch phase though. For xmas I got a swiss submariner "in the style" of the Rolex original. Debaufre. 2nd hand. For a steal. It's the 39mm and heavy-like-tank ... but I just super dig the look & feel all dainty like w/a big ol' luggy men's watch on. (Which is hard to do since I'm 5 ft 9+ and, uh, curvy). ADORE the contrast between my antique delicate yet sturdy e-ring set w/ the matte-ish band & black face. So D.E.C.O. in a way. Anyhoo ...

JLC is class(ic). But Gyp's gotta buy what SHE loves. Or else it's no better than the dastardly rug!

LOL Deco, sorry, my bad. I thought with the gallbladder being out, your eyes might have been affected too (don't ask me how the two are related, hahaha.)

My watch is masculine (sort of) on my wrist because it's round, leather strap and fairly big for my wrist. But still overall a feminine watch. And conservative to a point, which I've been lately when it comes to general jewelry.

I think it's yellow gold. I can't remember from the ones I've seen.

My experience with a mid-range quartz watch turned out to be pretty expensive. I've had it less than 20 years, it had to be sent to the factory for new batteries, and at least twice it required additional expensive repairs. The last time they said it needed such an extensive overhaul that I might as well just have replaced the watch... I brought it somewhere else and just had them put in a generic mechanism instead.

My mechanical watches require a cleaning every few years - I bought all of them used, and rotate among several watches these days, so I'm afraid I can't tell you how frequently they need cleaning. But I do know that some of my mechanical watches were made in the 40's and 50's, and they're still going strong!

Dastardly rug. LMAO. Perfect.

So... here's what I'm getting:

If I can find the Bedat I like second hand in good condition, and at a proper discount, it might be worth it. Same with the Oval Chopard (I really adore that watch).

I'll keep looking for a vintage mechanical I like (there have been some, as VR knows that I've loved). There was a vintage JLC that I let go (stupidly) with a pear face that was just gorgeous. I regret that. I wore my MIL's vintage JLC on my wedding day. So I really would like one of my own.

Longines, I agree with you T-gal. And I really don't want one by them. But I like the torneau shape and it had the mechanical so I thought I'd post it.
