This is mine and BF's first baby shower invitation EVER.

Baby is due in November, and will have a cousin who is older by 4 months (they all live in the same house) so I probably want to stay away from layette? I just don't want to get them anything they won't really want/need, because we're all poor grad students.

Some selections from their BRU registry:

Boppy Newborn Lounger
$36.99

Infantino ComfortRider
$19.99

Velboa Snuzzler Head & Body Support - Pink
by Kiddopotamus and Co
$19.99

Primo Eurobath Kit in White
$24.99

Evenflo 9 Oz Comfi Angled Bottles - 3 Pack
$6.49

Safety 1st Sound View Monitor
$19.99

The Ultimate Crib Sheet - White
by Basic Comfort
$19.99

So, I guess the Primo Eurobath and The Ultimate Crib Sheet get pretty good reviews. Also, she is not registered for it, but I was thinking the JJ Cole Bundle Me, since she's having a winter baby. We do live in So Cal, there no snow to speak of, so I was wondering if the Lite was a better option? The reviewers for the Lite say they just put in extra blankets if/when needed.

Help!

Everything on the list sounds good to me!!

The baby MAY get hand-me-downs from the older child, but it''s nice to have something new. And, who knows, the new baby and the older baby may wear the same size! So, if you find something really cute that you know they''ll love, I''d pick it up in addition to another "functional" gift. (if it''s in the price range)

Personally, I''d get the monitor and/or bottles. All of the other items are really not necessary. They won''t be able to use a bathtub for the first few days or possibly 2 weeks, the lounger could be replaced by a pillow (although the loungers are nice), the comfort rider is nice but I don''t know how much winter time use it would get (although I have no idea what the weather is like there), the snuggler can be replaced by a rolled up receiving blanket.

All of the things would be lovely to have, but as far as being "poor grad students," I think the monitor and bottles are the things they can''t live without.

i threw a shower for my friends a couple months ago and most people stuck to the registery.
but the one gift that aways stood out was a gift card. they are just now spending the gift cards, but you''d be surprised how handy they come 6 months down the road and all the free diapers are out

i also suggest the bottles!

I''d also vote for bottles, ultimate crib sheet, or a giftcard. Since you mentioned they are poor grad students, I''d stick with the necessities... that way she doesn''t get a lot of "cute" stuff and get stuck buying all of the necessities herself. I like what anonymous said about having a makeshift lounger, etc. You can''t really have a makeshift bottle though.

Also, you could add in a couple of "free babysitting" coupons (if you live nearby) so you could take the baby while she has a day to herself. That''d probably be nice for a busy grad student...

Since everyone seems to be commenting on the poor grad students: I just found out that the dad now has a FT job at Oracle.

But I think she is more or less going to SAH.

I''m not sure what Oracle is but thats great! In that case, I''d go with a necessity AND something cute

It's something computers. I want to do something cute and something not so cute, too.

Cute things:
Infantino carrier
JJ Cole Bundle Me

I hesitate to distinguish what is a necessity, since this sort of thing is really personal, so I have listed them under-

Boring things:
Primo Eurobath
Ultimate Crib Sheet
bottles
baby monitor

I'm comfortable with spending 40-60? Technically, it's from me and BF, but I know it's going to come out of my funds (it's ok, I probably owe him money somewhere.)

I was TOTALLY going to suggest the JJ Cole Bundle Me! I have a nov. baby and it was a must. Jackets are impossible with newborns and dangerous in the car seat so I used ours every single day. It''s around $40 so it you could get another small thing.

We also LOVED our Bundle Me!!

I have the bath, snuzzler and crib sheet. I love them all.

It's nice to buy something like the snuzzler, which is SO handy when they are young but used for such a small time that it seems like kind of a waste to buy. Some people use it in the carseat, others don't because it's not recommended by the carseat manufacturers. I used mine in strollers that don't recline to flat and boy was it helpful. My girl is 5 months and I still use it in her BOB.

That bundle me is a very cute! Sounds like a great gift. I never had one so instead used tons of blankets. . .seems like I got about 20 blankets at my shower so I never ran out.
