Wedding Attire Advice

We are having a formal wedding and reception, however we didn''t want to totally go black tie. Our invites are pretty formal as is our venue, but we just wanted to provide some info for guests about attire (as both the FI and I have some relatives that may not quite get it....). We are putting on our website under the FAQ section a little bit about what to wear.

How does something like this sound?

"We will be having a formal wedding and reception. This does not necessarily mean the attire involves tuxedos and ballgowns! Formal attire can include suits for men, cocktail dresses, skirts, or dressy pant suits for the ladies.

We also recommend comfortable shoes as the band will likely have you dancing the night away."

This recent thread has convinced me that it's unnecessary to hand-hold the guests on the attire front.

i have not read the above mentioned thread, so this may be redundant (or maybe contradictory)... but i think if you have formal invitations and they do not state "blacktie" than people will dress in precisely the way you are hoping they will. I don''t think anyone just throws on a tux or a ballgown. you bust out the tuxes and ballgowns when it is explicitly stated that you should be wearing one, right?

also, on the shoe issue, i think it''s unnecessary to bring up anything on this matter. I think it''s always assumed there will be dancing at an evening wedding. The only time I think you may need to say anything about shoes would be if your wedding is outdoors. I am putting on our website something along the lines of, "the ceremony and reception will be held outdoors, please chose your shoes accordingly" - i just don''t want someone coming in white satin stilettos and then sinking into the grass/dirt all night and ruining their shoes!
