I probably should let my DH in on the deal...since I don't want to get screwed...but I was sooooooooo hoping to just hand him some keys!
I would suggest doing just that. Keep in mind the discussions about how a guy bought a ring that the girl didn't like. Switch roles and sub car everywhere it says ring and it could sound very similar. Unless he has dropped serious hints about a year, make and model he likes, there very well could be some disappointment. Just as some women spend a lot of time imagining the perfect ring and wedding, many guys spend years picturing their dream car (mine would be very similar to Eleanor)

How about giving him with a scale model of something you think he would like (like a 60's Vette that has been mentioned) with a note that you will go shopping for the real thing together?

ETA: Sidenote: I once worked for a guy whose favorite "toy" was a '66 Stingray convertible with a 427---WOW!!!!

Two years ago FI purchased a '71 MG Midget off of eBay. It's a fantastic car and we've had lots of fun. The seller inherited it from his father who had bought it new in '71. The father did minor work on it to keep it in like new condition and it's considered one step down from 'mint' or showroom condition. He added a few minor things like the roll bar. FI picked it up for about $8k.

We call her 'Stuart' after the Stuart Little

This is what I would do too. Find one that is in as near new condition as possible, original owner if possible, as little mileage as possible, and that has been taken care of.

If you want to go into vintage cars, what qualifies cars as show cars (or even "original" for our purposes, in like new condition, or never been altered in the first place) and where to buy them, that's a whole hobby unto itself. You cannot get work done or parts easily for such cars, so if you want to buy one that needs work, you should also think of who is going to do that work before you buy the car (IMHO, not an easy road to hoe). You should also think about how you can get regular maintenance done and what you're going to do if you need a major repair, even if you buy one like this MG (nice car, BTW!).
